Bearpaw Ranch is a small working ranch raising animals and crops using organic methods. We raise Longhorn cattle and have numerous horses and mules. We are situated along the Gila River just below the Turkey Creek area of the Gila Wilderness. Great for birding, hiking, exploring.

The space

This cabin is on 140 acres just north of the little town of Gila.
There are 4 small ponds on the property and it's an easy walk from the cabin. The Gila River flows through the middle of the ranch and is a bird watchers delight!
Horses are welcome and I have pasture and stable rates. The Gila Wilderness is easily accessible and the ranch is near the end of the paved road at the Turkey Creek entrance of the wilderness
Area attractions include the Wild West Rodeo, the Memorial Day Jazz Festival, and the world renown Tour of the Gila bike races in April.

This sweet little adobe house sits down a shady lane close to the largest of our 4 ponds and only a short walk to the river. The delightful thing about being at Bearpaw Ranch is the solitude and serenity. You could literally go days without having to interact with people or you could meet local people by visiting area businesses. I live on the property and go about my business with no expectation of any interaction with my guests. I'm friendly, but not nosy! You can easily recharge here!

Guest access

Very near the Gila Wilderness. The Turkey Creek entrance to the wilderness is on up the road just a few winding mountain miles. There are numerous trail heads within a half hour drive.
Horse friendly. 35 m from Silver City NM off highway. The Lanehouse is very private and serene. There is a large firepit for outside fires. The wonderful porch is shaded by a giant native black walnut tree. Catch and release allowed in our 4 ponds. It's just a short walk to the ponds and the river. Horseback riding seasonally available. Very dark night skies are wonderful for star gazing. This lovely adobe is fully furnished with a queen bed and a loveseat size couch that makes out into a bed. The house is supplied with plenty of fluffy white linens. There is a gas BBQ, satellite TV, landline phone and WiFi. There is a firepit for bonfires and we supply the wood.

Interaction with guests

This is a small working ranch and we are usually busy working on something. We love meeting new folks but also respect your privacy. You can spend days never seeing anyone if you so choose. There is a small community library, park with tennis courts, and Senior Citizen center 3milles down the road if you want to be more sociable. It is really up to you. We want your stay here to be restful and restorative, or busy and challenging. Whichever is your cup of tea.

Other things to note

Gila is a beautiful 35 minute drive from Silver City NM where you will find numerous shops, galleries, unique restaurants and museums. The Gila Wilderness is all around us, and there is hiking and bird watching galore. An excellent day trip from your humble abode here could include a visit to the Gila Cliff Dwellings (about 2 1/2 hours each way) or a picnic at the Catwalk in Glenwood(only 25 beautiful miles north). Yearly events include world famous bike racing and free weekend long music festivals. The Blues Fest on Memorial weekend and Bluegrass in September. The Wild West Rodeo is in June, and the county fair is held out here in the valley on the last weekend of September.

The Lane House is a hidden gem. It's bright, airy and has a nice shaded front yard. It even has a fully equipped kitchen. The mesa in the middle of the property has a beautiful unobstructed views of the Gila mountain range. Be sure to bring some carrots for the horses. The ducks seem to like corn taco shells. Internet speeds were ok. Lane house internet was just barely fast enough for a voip call. (voip was important for us because the area is has no Verzion cell coverage) The hosts, Rose and Sherry are great and we look forward to staying with them again. They were very generous with their time. Overall a great place and we can't wait to return

Rose was so welcoming and warm. Her cabin was absolutely gorgeous. She was accommodating to our schedule and very easy to get in contact with. We will be staying there again soon.

We really enjoyed our stay at the Lane House. We were warmly welcomed by Sherri and she helped us get acquainted with the area. The Lane House was very clean, cozy, and had everything we needed. We enjoyed the peaceful walk around the ranch and the nice quiet atmosphere. It was a wonderful time of R & R that we really needed. We will definitely be returning there next time we are in the Gila area. We highly recommend it to anyone.

I'm a real country, out in the boonies kind of a gal....maybe even a hermit. I love the Gila and Southwestern New Mexico. I have lived here in this house for 33 years and have no desire to live anywhere else. This property is my delight, and I feel so blessed to be able to share it with my many guests from all around the country and even the world. There is a serenity here. It makes me so happy when folks come here and find it.
