The Black House provides true comforts of home and the close proximity to all things nearby that make Charlottetown a truly wonderful place to visit. It's our hope your stay with us will be one of your most memorable!

The space

Situated on the second level, with its original centre hall private entrance opening formally to the street, our 'Sailor's Suite' retains authentic vintage detail dating back to the late 1880s when the house was originally constructed. With the patina of old wood floors, wide baseboards, original mill-work window surrounds, beadboard trim and hand-crafted panel doors, this suite has been thoughtfully and sensitively renovated to respect the integrity of the beloved family home it once was, while offering all manner of contemporary comforts including luxury appointments and furnishings.

From the gracious foyer up the vintage staircase, the suite’s rooms radiate off the centre hall. Having a split bedroom plan, each sleeping sanctuary offers ample proportions and high ceilings, with the rear bedroom opening to a covered porch which overlooks the landscaped garden. The separate living room can be converted into a third bedroom as required, and the enchanting newly renovated kitchen with bistro table boasts a sun-drenched balcony perfect for morning coffee or barbecuing. This endearing suite has that special patina unique to a well-loved vintage home, with all the laid-back comfort of a country-escape. That it’s within steps to the heart of Old Charlottetown makes it magical!

Simply amazing accommodations. It was everything I had hoped for and more. From the top-of-the-line modern appliances, to the fresh flowers, to the covered back deck, to the vintage working record player - this home has a palpable energy to it. You just feel good being there. More than that, you feel spoiled. Cannot say enough about this place. We are a family of 5 with 3 teenage kids and we'll definitely be back!

What a nice place. Ceiling Fans in all the rooms kept it cool in this hot weather. Kitchen was very modern, with some great wine waiting on the counter! About a 12m walk to downtown, location was convenient.

Had a great time in Charlottetown the house was very stylish and was a fantastic place to base our PEI adventure from. We appreciated the welcome pack and the fact that James was around to ask questions about the property. Would recommend this place to anyone wanting to stay in Charlottetown

Perfect is the only word to describe the Vintage Captain's Quarters! From a welcome note, wine, and fresh biscuits, to the PEI beach pass and fresh flowers, no detail was missed. This place felt like home the minute we arrived. It felt like we had stepped into a House & Home magazine, with the beautiful and cozy decor (perfect lighting, fabrics, art, record player, cozy/private balcony etc.). We were also lucky enough to meet James who was a wonderfully friendly host during our stay. A perfect vacation oasis.

My daughter and I couldn't have asked for a more beautiful (and aptly fitting) home for the purpose of our trip (ie, to visit the land of Anne of Green Gables, and inherently Lucy Maud Montgomery). The pictures do not do this home enough justice - it's that lovely, charming, and relaxing. Additionally, the added touches (fresh biscuits and preserves, local bottles of wine, candles, a PEI national park pass, and even an emergency cell phone) truly made this one of my most memorable Air BnB stays. The house was so calming that it was hard to even go out some days! With respect to location, everything in Charlottetown proper (ie, all the restaurants and local attractions) are within walking distance from this home, which we loved. Also, Charlottetown itself is a great central hub to readily get to all other parts of the island in minimal time; most of the Anne/LMM sites were all within a half hour to 45-minute drive from Charlottetown. I highly recommend this home!

We're a family of 5 and the black house was our home for 11 days. We had good memories for keeps! I love the fact that the house is in a quiet neighborhood and the neighbors were extremely friendly. The house is just about 10 minutes walk to Sobey's and restaurants. Parking is also available. Strong wifi was a plus. James and house manager April were always ready to assist. What I appreciated about the lovely house are the details added into the interiors, like the fresh flowers and the scent, which all added to its coziness. We also loved the kitchen. We bought fresh lobster and other seafoods and prepared them at home. My family was able to bond with one another through culinary! Highly recommendable!

James User ProfileJames is a superhost.

I own Upper Hillsborough with my long-time friend and business associate, Steven. We're both Realtors with Bosley Real Estate Brokerage in Toronto, Ontario. Steven, who operates his urbaneer division, has been with Bosley for many years, and myself, many fewer! We've been fast and fabulous friends since meeting while attending the University of Victoria.

I'm originally from Summerland, British Columbia, having moved to Toronto in 1988 to pursue my education and my career as an orchestral musician. In the time since, I've performed with many of Canada's finest ensembles including the Toronto Symphony, the National Ballet of Canada and the Canadian Opera Company, and played music in places as far flung and varied as Charlottetown, Hong Kong, and Edinburgh.

Since 1999, I've been lucky enough to call Charlottetown home during the summer months thanks to my long involvement as a musician at the Charlottetown Festival.

12 Upper Hillsborough at time of purchase in 2008 was a true diamond-in-the-rough: solid, tons of character, and well-situated to Old Charlottetown on a street shared with many fellow artists and artisans! We fell in love with it's quirkiness, it's history, it's outstanding potential and it's close proximity to all the things nearby that make Charlottetown a truly wonderful place to visit. It's our hope your stay with us will be one of your most memorable!
