We are Wim & Phillip, a Dutch/Indonesian male couple 73/50, we love to meet interesting people from around the world. Wim is a retired tv journalist, Phillip a fashion designer.

In our elegant and spacious countryside villa near Yogyakarta/Indonesia we made accommodation available for 1-4 paying guests who like to combine a nice homy ambiance with a pleasant personal approach and interesting conversations - about life in general and life in Indonesia in particular.

We started our B&B after our experimental unusual restaurant theSawah (home cooking upon request) became a success: we are in the top ten of 800+ restaurants in Yogyakarta, according to TripAdvisor reviews. Several dinner guests asked if accommodation was available, so we gave the B&B concept a start. See how we did so far in the most recent entries of our TripAdvisor reviews.

We offer a small but comfortable guest room for 2 people with romantic canopy queen size bed, aircon and private hot/cold water bathroom. Incidentally our spacious master bedroom is available as well. See the Master Bedroom listing).

We live 8km south of Yogyakarta, amidst the rice and sugar cane fields in a romantic tranquil tropical area. We like to treat our guests as visiting friends, helping them where we can with tour and transport arrangements, itinerary advice, laundry service, massage requests, motorbike rental etc.

A taxi to/from the city centre and/or railway station of Yogyakarta takes 20-25 minutes and costs around rp. 45.000. Taxis from the airport (45 mins) charge a fixed fee but with wheeling and dealing you can find cheaper options than the requested rp (PHONE NUMBER HIDDEN). We offer our guests free one way station/airport pickup/dropoff for minimum 5 nights stay. Free two way transport for minimum 7 nights stay.

Our B&B has just 1 room if we are home - but use of the rest of the house is what we can offer as well. Plus the guarantee of an excellent breakfast (Western or Asian), free WiFi internet, all day free coffee/tea/aqua, helpful service and pleasant company. Dinner in our home restaurant is optional. English, Indonesian, Javanese, Dutch, German, French, (little) Spanish spoken.

We own two peaceful dogs: the beatle Bingo and the very enthousiastic golden retriever Hero.
We don't own cats, but feed some that come here on an irregular basis. Other than this we have around 200 fish in our pond, 10 chicken, 4 ducks, 2 turkeys. And the sounds of crickets, frogs and gekkos...

Be most welcome for two or more nights.
Discounted rates apply for longer stay: our place could be ideal for those who need a comfortable and quiet temporary work/study space.

Guest access

The Guest Room is small, but house and hospitality are big. You can use both completely during your stay. Very good breakfast included: Western or Indonesian. Optional: big authentic Javanese rijsttafel dinner, 2 pax minimum, rp 150.000/pax

Other things to note

We recommend to spend minimum 3 but better 4 nights in and around Yogya. Once you book we send you our long list of tips & suggestions and will be pleased to help you plan your stay well. Recommended ideas: 1 day with car/driver to the temples and volcano, 1 day to explore the city by yourself, 1 day with car/driver to do the rural Bantul tour: our non-touristic green district with lots of handicraft. This tour finishes at the legendary Parangtritis beach.

And there is a friendly but urgent request: please switch off the aircon when you are not in the room.
For the rest: be yourself and behave like you would do in your own place.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at The Sawah. The place meets all expectations and more. The host and their extended family are very friendly and helpful. They knew a great driver, the best places to shop and eat. They shared with us some, much appreciated, inside information about the country. The house is beautiful, the neighbourhood is near the Ceramic village (woth a visit) of Kasongan on the outskirts of Yogyar. We highly recommend this place and will deffenately return here on our next visit to Indonesia.

Wonderful, authentic, self designed project house (think TVs grand designs) nestled between rice paddies and overgrowth just a short distance outside the bustling city. Wim and Phillip and all the staff were excellent hosts and couldn't have been more helpful with suggestions and support during our stay. The room is a small ensuite as described and we found, particularly, the outdoor patio garden area an excellent place to relax before or after a day's sightseeing.

We stayed in this Airbnb for 3 nights and it was absolutely amazing! The area is very quiet and surrounded by beautiful ricefields. The garden is traditional Indonesian and very idyllic. Our room was comfortable and very clean. The hosts Philipp and Wim were super friendly and very welcoming. Wim provided us with a lot of recommendations and tips for Yogyakarta and Bali. He was a big help for us planning our stay in Yogyakarta and our upcoming trip in Bali. The Sawah also offers home cooking dinner on request. They serve a meal called Rijstafel which contains a lot of different authentic Indonesian dishes to try. A soup as starter and a typical Indonesian dessert were included too. So good!! We HIGHLY recommend this place!!

We had a lovely stay at the sawah home. It was good to retreat from the heat and bustle of Yogya city to Kasongan village. Wim was very sociable and chatty and provided many recommendations. Staff Erawan was friendly, efficient and discreet. We highly recommend the rijstaffel meal! The recommended driver Sutarman was hardworking and friendly. The guest room was modest in size, as described, but there was space to enjoy the terrace dining room and spacious living room. The bed was also very comfortable. However, If you're considering this property it might be useful to 1. Enjoy the company of a very enthusiastic dog 2. Be well prepared for mosquitoes if you are prone to them 3. Know that it is 20+ mins taxi ride to the city 4. Be Prepared for a sociable experience with the host (it's not a private airbnb rental!)

This place is very nice and the location is perfect, near the rice field and outside the center of Yogyakarta which is a very busy city. Unfortunately Wim was away but he made everything to welcome us in the best way in contacting us prior our arrival. During our stay everyone at the villa helped us to enjoy our stay what we obviously did. The dinner we had there was excellent ! Thanks for evrything and see you next time.

Wim was extremely welcoming when we first booked the room. He helped us plan our entire trip to Yogyakarta, including vetting our itinerary, helping us hire a driver, organising a very delicious dinner at the theSawah restaurant, and arranging other aspects of our visit such as home massages. However, Wim was away at the time of the trip. Couple of points regarding the room itself though - it is exactly what it shows in the picture - i.e. has a double bed and a table, but nothing more than that (the bed is a bit creaky sometimes). The aircon in the room doesn't really work though, so it was a bit warm to sleep at night. Another point - the house is (obviously, as per the name) situated in the middle of rice fields, which results in a large number of mosquitoes in the house / room.

Response from Wim & Phillip:
Thanks for your review, Tanuj and Pri, Allow me a few remarks. Your description of the room suggests a prison cell ;-) It is compact, indeed, as described in our listing, but has more than a bed and a table: a clothes cabinet, a book/stuff rack, clothes hanger rack and decorations. You are the first who had problems with the aircon capacity. It is limited but for most guests even too much: they put the temperature up or switch it off during the night. For a house like ours their are remarkably few mosquitos in/around the house. Nevertheless, they do fly around, seasonally. We instruct our staff to spray the guest room every night and provide insect coil under the dinner table. We will take care of the area behind the bed. Since I was gone: no guarantee that this was done during your stay. As to the price: you do not just pay for the room. You can use the whole villa, including living room, terraces. We think our price is fair, compared to others. Regards, Wim Regards, Wim

Interaction with guests

We try to host our guests as friends. We are open to stories and conversations, which can help you understand Indonesia better (sorry if we are travelling...) The Guest Room has no tv, but in case you want to watch news or a movie or so, you can use the tv and/or dvd-player in the living room.
