The space

Apartment 3- Wilderness Suite
This is a sunny one-bedroom apartment on the south side of the building, and has beautiful southern exposure. It has a wonderful, cozy feel to it, and is one of our favorites. The high ceilings, vintage kitchen, original built-in cabinetry and clawfoot tub are a nod to a bygone era, while the modern appliances, high speed internet and 40” flatscreen TV ensure all the comforts of the present day.

With your booking, you will receive a daily $5 voucher per adult, which can be applied to a meal, snack, smoothie, coffee or other menu item at The Sea Bean café, which occupies the lower level of our building. (please note that the cafe will be closed from Nov. 24 through March 31, 2017, so no vouchers will be provided if you stay with us during that timeframe.)

Built in 1907 by William Sauers, the Sauerdough Lodging building has served many purposes over the years. It originally housed the Seward Commercial Co. general store, with a town meeting hall upstairs. During the Roaring ’20s, the building was used as a brothel. It is presently the home of The Sea Bean café downstairs and rental apartments upstairs.

The five apartments are beautifully restored, with original hardwood floors, clawfoot tubs, original built-in cabinetry, high ceilings and vintage kitchens with modern appliances. In a town that was hit hard by the 1964 earthquake, few original buildings have stood the test of time, and fewer still feature such comfortable accommodations. We offer our guests the unique opportunity to experience Seward’s history without sacrificing any of the conveniences you expect while traveling.

Entire apartment, and cafe downstairs.

We email access codes 2 weeks prior to check-in. We try to say hi to all guests during their stay, and are always just a text or call away. Help is also available at the cafe downstairs during business hours.

We are located on the main block of downtown Seward, on Fourth Ave, between Adams and Washington. Shops, restaurants, bars, the library, community museum, waterfront, kayak rentals, and the Alaska SeaLife Center are all at your fingertips (or feet).

The best part about Seward is how foot and bike friendly it is- you can walk or bike everywhere! The waterfront bike path is beautiful, and takes you to the harbor. If you don't feel like walking/biking, the city operates a free shuttle during the summer that stops at various points around Seward, including downtown and the harbor.

Our apartments are located on the second floor, which is only accessed by stairs (see photo in our photo section). We apologize, but we do not have an elevator. We'd be glad to help you up the stairs with your luggage, if you give us a call or text first!

Great place. Everyone was super helpful getting us settled in and even helped us get lunches for fishing put together from the SeaBean Cafe. Really wish we could have stayed longer. Thanks!

The location of this place is great for exploring Seward! Just down the street from a brewery and the fun waterfront walk. Meredith's Sea Bean cafe is such a sweet spot among a lot of small shops too. We enjoyed being above the cafe, but would've liked coffee in the room to be able to use the coffee maker each morning. But the coffee in the cafe was GREAT too! Otherwise it's just as described. It's a building with charm and LOTS of space. There were fresh flowers in the room when we arrived to celebrate our anniversary and Meredith made our boat tour reservations for us on the day of our anniversary too, very kind - we got to see Killer Whales and much more. They serve wine & beer in the cafe too which was nice when returning from our exploring. Highly recommend their place!

Its right in the heart of 'downtown' Seward, close to the marine center and good eats, as well as the shops. it is an older place, with the usual quirks (charm) so if you are looking for a Hilton, this is not it. The suite was comfortable and well appointed, but remember to bring your own coffee and filters for the ADC maker in the kitchen ;-)

The amount of space we had for the price was great! King size bed, living room, and kitchen; and all in the middle of town. We really enjoyed our weekend stay. For winter travelers, keep in mind the Sea Bean café downstairs is closed, remember to pack toiletries and bring your own coffee.

I love the idea of globe-trotting and love living vicariously through our guests that pass through our lodge on their way to their next adventure. My husband and I run The Sea Bean, a coffee shop right below our apartments, in addition to Sauerdough Lodging, and we have two little girls that keep us busier than both businesses combined.
