•Smoking is not permitted inside the house, but is permitted on lawn, porches, pier and screened-in porch, where receptacles are provided
•No pets are allowed on the property at any time
•When coming if from the lake in wet bathing suits, please enter through Ladies’ and Men’s dressing rooms on ground floor to change into dry clothes before entering the main part of the house
•There are ‘beach towels’ provided in dressing rooms; please use these for outdoors and refrain from using bath towels outside
•Most windows in the house are operational and screened. There are receptacles for deposit of such items in each bathroom. Should this rule be broken, guests will be charged an additional fee of $750.00 for cleaning out the system.
•The use of fireworks and firearms is strictly forbidden on the property of The Snowden House, in accordance with the requirements of the commercial liability insurance and homeowner’s insurance attached to this property. Evidence of the use of such devises will incur strict fines

My family and I had a wonderful time. I went with my wife and our two babies, and the accommodations couldn't have been nicer or more comfortable. The house was beautiful and charming, and Martha was a gracious and attentive host. We ordered dinner and breakfast, and both meals were superb, made with all fresh ingredients from the local farmers market. The lakefront view of Horseshoe Lake was lovely, and the water (in June) was perfect for swimming. We will definitely be staying there again!

This home is full of wonderful contradictions. First, it is essentially a grand estate masquerading as a lake house. How does one reconcile an ornately-carved marble fireplace with the old wooden planks of a pier? A plush king bed and a dusty hammock. Champagne and bug spray. For every dripping chandelier and gilded mirror, there is a lived-in chair inviting you to sink in. The library is full of contradictions as well, from Faulkner to fashion magazines. The result is an opulent and elevated space that somehow manages to be comfortable and down-to-earth. You can listen to jazz in the opulent sitting room or watch sitcoms in the cozy den downstairs. You can have a romantic meal in the formal dining room or go to the local diner for a triple bacon burger as big as your head. You can go upstairs and pretend to be Lady Mary or go downstairs and be Mrs. Bates. You can use the house as a base to sightsee or you can stay-in and experience the rich history of the host's family and its home. Make sure you book at least one extra day to do the latter- you won't regret it.

What a fantastic place to stay! Just outside Memphis and an easy 20 minute drive to any attractions in Memphis you care to visit. Martha was a great host! We requested breakfast and she prepared delicious dishes for us that we really enjoyed. You can even bring your own food and use the kitchen if you wish. The home was very unique, very well kept and a great spot to relax and enjoy the privacy of a lakeside mansion with some great history. If you are looking for a convenient "landing spot" or a quiet place to get away from the hectic downtown spots then this is where you will want to stay. We'll definitely book again the next time we are in the Memphis area.

We had an absolute blast at Snowden house! Martha is such a gracious host and the house is located in a beautiful spot that allowed us to both visit Memphis (Sun Studios, Graceland, Civil Rights Museum and a Red Birds baseball game) and relax at Horseshoe lake. Martha took us on a lake cruise which was amazing! We would really recommend Snowden House to others. We would love to return!

We left the Snowden House with a song in our step for the last leg of our cross country journey. It was a pleasant retreat and a great place to recharge after a long day of driving. Martha cooked us a delicious meal and acquired a local beer for us. We fell in love with her dream kitchen. Our only worry was not being able to enjoy every facet of this amazing historic home by the water, but we'll definitely stay longer next time. P.S. We took a dip in the lake and it was delightful!

This is my family home, built for my grandparents when they were newlyweds in 1919 by my Great Grandfather, R. Brinkley Snowden of Memphis, Tennessee. I was born at Horseshoe Lake, but grew up in San Francisco. Each summer, my sisters and I would visit my grandparents at the lake…
