Self-contained couples cottage - large lounge & bedroom overlooking forested hills. King bed, log fire, private deck, outdoor spa access, TV, WiFi, iPod dock, games, movies. No children or extra guests. Definitely no parties. Guests with completed Airbnb profiles only.
Firetail Bush Retreat (named in honour of the abundant bird species here, of which Beautiful Firetails are one) is a fully self contained cottage which includes a large lounge and sunny king size bedroom (overlooking the surrounding hills). It has a cosy log fire, large parking area, private deck off the bedroom, outdoor BBQ, TV and ipod dock, books and magazines, movies and games, internet access and your own kitchen and bathroom. Couples and singles only - we do not accommodate babies, children or additional guests sorry.
As our guests you have access to an outdoor jacuzzi by arrangement after you arrive, where you can sip a glass of Tassie pinot noir, listen to the owls, watch the wildlife bounce past and count the stars. You have your own private entrance which is accessed via stairs off the carpark.
The listing is on 6 acres of bush, with abundant wildlife and your rustic but very comfortable cottage is built to a traditional Aussie bush theme (stone, iron and wood). The bathroom has a shower over the bath, toilet, vanity and a washing machine.
There are various options if your prefer to eat out including pub meals at the Oyster Cove Marina (no meals on Sunday nights), several local cafes, or go to the local sheep cheesery or providore and cook yourselves up a storm in the fully equipped kitchen (basic condiments provided - salt/pepper/milk/oil). A pizza trailer is currently operating in Kettering Friday and Sat nights (details on the fridge). Alternatively it's only 10mins drive south to the award winning Peppermint Bay for drinks/meals on the waterfront in nearby Woodbridge (check hours). The townships of Kingston, Cygnet and Huonville are only a short drive and there is also a local store with basic groceries and fuel at the end of our road and a small grocer at oyster cove (typically open until around 7pm). Kettering is rural however (ie. no supermarkets) so be sure to pick up your supplies on your way down. Kingston has several large supermarkets.

Firetail is situated in the hills of Kettering, 35mins south of Hobart down the D'Entrecasteux Channel and about 2kms off the main Channel Hwy (where there is a bus stop taking you into Hobart. It is a pleasant but longish walk from the house). Kettering is what you might call comfortable bush living, with a large marina down the road and is the jumping off point for gourmet and beach travelling on Bruny Island. By staying with us, you receive a significant discount on Bruny Island Safari guided bus tours by prior arrangement although you can of course explore Bruny in your own car (ferry costs approx. $30 return per vehicle).
Golfing guests with your own clubs - there is a very well maintained and scenic (overlooking North West Bay) 18 hole golf course only 15 mins drive away - as our guests you qualify for a 20% discount on green fees - just ask us when you get here for your voucher. For public access times (SENSITIVE CONTENTS HIDDEN) North West Bay Golf Club.
Your residence is attached to the rear of our house via a short, locked hallway but is very private. As well as having your own separate entrance (up the black stairs from the carpark), you are more than welcome to explore our bush block (which is steep to walk around but has great mountain views, including distant Mount Wellington). For your own safety, please keep away from the dams - they are only for fire-fighting and wallaby refreshment :-) not for swimming. We are on rainwater - (much nicer than town water), so please be sensible with your water use. You are however welcome to use the outdoor jacuzzi (by arrangement), kept at a toasty 37/38 degrees C. Our own house and yard (where the spa is) is kept private, unless otherwise arranged.
Interaction with guests
As much or as little as you desire. We generally leave you entirely to your own devices, but we are happy to chat and talk to you about the area, show you maps, etc. For potential guests with holiday rentals themselves we are very open to the idea of accommodation swaps - please get in touch to discuss.
Other things to note
There are stairs up to the cottage - something to consider if you have mobility issues. Also, we are a singles/couples accommodation and not set up for children or extra guests sorry.
Three requests - please abide by the in-house info booklet (including spa rules), smoking in designated outdoor area only and please talk to us before interacting with our dogs. Note that spa is only available up until 10pm in the evenings by booking a time with us after your arrival.
Hi there, we are Damien and Sonia: A true Tasmanian and a Victorian import who live on 6 acres of beautiful bushland in Kettering in Southern Tasmania (about 35mins south of Hobart) with our great dane, Jack and occasional foster dogs (we also run a Great Dane Rescue). Damien can often be found at the local dog beach making cappuccinos out of his coffee trailer and Sonia is a paramedic and part-time artist/children's book author. We have an AirBNB self contained cottage attached to the back of our house (Firetail Bush Retreat). We have spent varying amounts of time travelling overseas and within Australia and both feel it's better to stay with a local, rather than in a sterile hotel room where possible so we stay Airbnb whenever we can. Sonia's favourite destinations are Iceland, Switzerland and Nepal so far and Damien loves the Maldives and New Zealand. We have a bit of a love affair with food and wine and enjoy bushwalking and seeing this wonderful state of ours, so we're more than happy to point guests in the right direction there. Whilst we are very keen to ensure you have everything you need for a comfortable stay, we also of course fully respect your privacy whilst you're here so will leave you entirely to your own devices if that's your preference. Our house is about 2kms off the main road where you will find the ferry to beautiful Bruny Island (for foodies: think oysters, Australia's most southerly vineyard where they do great food, organic/smoked/free-range meats and fish, award winning cheese … oh, and endless deserted beaches) plus there's a few cafes, the pub overlooking the marina and the best chocolate shop I've found - don't miss out on Nutpatch if you're visiting. Anyway, we look forward to meeting you somewhere out there in AirBNB land …. at your place or ours :-)
