With 800 years of recorded history , a painstaking restoration of the ancient fabric, and a dream realised of a self sustaining green environment, Romiti provides luxury and originality to create a holiday experience the traveller will not forget.

The space

Romiti dates from Roman times when it probably served as a watch post on the road North to the Coast and the ancient port of Luni. Archives record its reinvention as one of the first Augustinian monasteries in the early 1200's with a thriving community of canny monks who ran the religious settlement side by side with a lucrative industry of ore extraction and iron forging , making the area famous for hand made nails . It was abandoned when we found it , the buildings all but derelict and the woods overgrown. The restoration was achieved using local craftsmen , local materials and an awful lot of time. We are very proud of the result .

Steven's place is stunning. He housed a group of ~20 of us during the Rolling Stones weekend and this was perfect hideaway within reach of Lucca. The views are stunning, the place is (URL HIDDEN) will be a place you will not forget. Thanks again Steven.

Despite the tricky access, the place is wonderful. We had a great time in a laid back atmosphere in a quiet natural environnement. Unfortunatelly, we did not have time to organise with Steven a ceramic workshop as it is the best place to do it. Steven and Lindsay are great host and we warmly recommend the expérience in The Monastery.

The photos don't do it justice. As a designer, I couldn't have done anything better myself, everything we could need was there. The place was phenomenally renovated. We had such a great stay, we didn't want to ever leave. From the pool to the stocked chefs kitchen...I could have stayed all year. Every room was a star (there was no bad room) and that's never happened in my travels.

Before I go into details,I just need to say that you should definitely go to this place! We intend to return, probably many times... Firstly the location is sublime. Gloriously remote, with beautiful hill & forest views, yet only a 15 walk down to the village which has an excellent alimentario for all your provisions & a couple of very decent restaurants. There is some easy, good walking nearby & apparently fantastic walks in easy driving distance but we were so captivated by the place we didn't stray too far! So, to the monastery accommodations. Basically the renovation is impeccable, and the brilliant thing is you can really feel the history of this ancient place yet it is far from austere or uncomfortable. Comfy beds, great showers, simple but well designed rooms where you sleep well & then wake up to birdsong! Perfection! We had the run of the place (16 of us fitted in very comfortably) but I'm sure just coming to stay on a B&B basis would also be glorious. Finally to the hosts. Lindsay & Steven were brilliant. Friendly & helpful but unobtrusive. The hosting felt very relaxed yet efficient enough to look after the 16 of us! Oh and their cooking - just, WOW! So, I will return to the original statement. You should, must even, go. From the moment you turn the final corner of the steep & winding driveway & I Romiti comes into view you will be drawn in & never want to leave.!
