Finca Isla (***Directions Keyword Search***: "FINCA ISLA WELLNESS RETREAT") was once the largest coffee plantation in the Northern Zone of Costa Rica. Today it is a pioneering model of reforestation with native species. Guest House La Guaria is at one end of a row of 6 houses built solidly in 1982 from concrete and steel to house migrant coffee workers. In those days often large families occupied the house, sleeping on primitive bunk beds nailed to the walls and cooking on a wood fire in one corner. La Guaria has been completely renovated using the finest tropical woods, with extra end windows and a hand crafted porch addition. The hot water shower is supplied by a German on demand heater, and the mattresses are orthopedic. There is a full kitchen with pots and pans, an electric stove, coffee maker, and small refrigerator. The beds and other furniture were hand made on the farm in our woodworking shop from the finest Costa Rican hardwoods.
Finca Isla is not just a place to stay but also a destination in itself, with rivers and rain forests to explore, and with most of the biodiversity of Costa Rica concentrated in one spot. The center of the farm has been reforested with over 100 native tree species. Fruit from these trees and from the mile of virgin rain forest along the rivers on both sides provide abundant food for monkeys and birds. Finca Isla is a birder's dream: with both the forest and river birds, including Parrots, Toucans, Mot Mots and the elusive Sun Bittern. A strict organic policy with no toxins helps maintain our perfect environment for the red frogs, Blue Morpho butterflies, and other delicate creatures.

Other things to note
The San Carlos region is renowned for its abundant rainfall and lush green vegetation all year round. The “dry" season coincides with the American and European winter, making Aguas Zarcas a perfect getaway from the freezing cold.
Our “rainy” season also known as the green season begins in mid May and continues through December. During this period it can rain for several days straight, but locals actually prefer this time. The forests are in full bloom, and the nearby waterfalls and white waters are spectacular.
The rain can come at any time but it is lukewarm, not cold, and provides one esoteric super healthy addition: it washes the plants and earth and fills the air with pure cleansing ozone from the atmosphere above. We love our rain and after one day away in the hot dry zones we can't wait to get back. The high energy falling rivers provide a background sound like waves at the ocean, perfect for sleep or an afternoon nap.
During the green season, a good umbrella, waterproof footwear and a positive attitude are recommended.
Guests are expected to treat our facilities, our spectacular surroundings, and our other guests with common courtesy and respect. This includes no smoking in or near the houses or porches, and quiet time after 10 PM. Guest are required to get some orientation which we freely provide before hiking the property or rain forests or swimming in the rivers. In the end these activities are at your own risk.

My husband Josh and I are living part time on our 80 acre reforestation farm in Costa Rica. We enjoy watching monkeys, birds and other wildlife from our front porch. I am a certified yoga instructor, do aquarelle painting, and hike in the virgin rainforest on our farm. We eat whole foods, exercise daily outdoors and practice non invasive health optimization therapies (infra red, ozone and PEMF).
