The space

Finca Isla (***Directions Keyword Search***: "FINCA ISLA WELLNESS RETREAT") was once the largest coffee plantation in the Northern Zone of Costa Rica. Today it is a pioneering model of reforestation with native species. Guest House La Guaria is at one end of a row of 6 houses built solidly in 1982 from concrete and steel to house migrant coffee workers. In those days often large families occupied the house, sleeping on primitive bunk beds nailed to the walls and cooking on a wood fire in one corner. La Guaria has been completely renovated using the finest tropical woods, with extra end windows and a hand crafted porch addition. The hot water shower is supplied by a German on demand heater, and the mattresses are orthopedic. There is a full kitchen with pots and pans, an electric stove, coffee maker, and small refrigerator. The beds and other furniture were hand made on the farm in our woodworking shop from the finest Costa Rican hardwoods.

Finca Isla is not just a place to stay but also a destination in itself, with rivers and rain forests to explore, and with most of the biodiversity of Costa Rica concentrated in one spot. The center of the farm has been reforested with over 100 native tree species. Fruit from these trees and from the mile of virgin rain forest along the rivers on both sides provide abundant food for monkeys and birds. Finca Isla is a birder's dream: with both the forest and river birds, including Parrots, Toucans, Mot Mots and the elusive Sun Bittern. A strict organic policy with no toxins helps maintain our perfect environment for the red frogs, Blue Morpho butterflies, and other delicate creatures.

Other things to note

The San Carlos region is renowned for its abundant rainfall and lush green vegetation all year round. The “dry" season coincides with the American and European winter, making Aguas Zarcas a perfect getaway from the freezing cold.
Our “rainy” season also known as the green season begins in mid May and continues through December. During this period it can rain for several days straight, but locals actually prefer this time. The forests are in full bloom, and the nearby waterfalls and white waters are spectacular.
The rain can come at any time but it is lukewarm, not cold, and provides one esoteric super healthy addition: it washes the plants and earth and fills the air with pure cleansing ozone from the atmosphere above. We love our rain and after one day away in the hot dry zones we can't wait to get back. The high energy falling rivers provide a background sound like waves at the ocean, perfect for sleep or an afternoon nap.
During the green season, a good umbrella, waterproof footwear and a positive attitude are recommended.

Our month stay at La Finca Isla was relaxing and rejuvenating. With the river just steps away and being able to go for a hike was great. So much wildlife around you, we were able to see the monkeys and feed them. Ingrid's homemade chocolate was yummy. The hospitality and attentiveness were appreciated. You can easily get to the tourist attractions. Nearby is the main city where you can buy your fresh produce. Everyone at La Finca was very nice and helpful. I hope to come back soon.

Totally awesome place, tucked away and FULL of nature! Thoroughly enjoyed the place, we had a rental car so it made it easy to get around; I would recommend one if staying here. Its about an hour away from La Fortuna, we went there for most of our activities, its a cool drive. I would highly recommend this place to anyone!

If you are trying to decide, go with the decision that stays at Finca Isla! This place is amazing with amazing fruit, animals, and of course amazing host! Ingrid is so willing to help and makes you feel right at home. I wish I could have stayed longer because I fell in love with this place. I will be back for more memories and to visit my new friend Ingrid PURA VIDA!

This place is BEAUTIFUL! The sound of the river is so relaxing and the property is beautiful; filled with flowers and plants. The accommodations were clean and simple and had everything we needed for our 4 night stay. Ingrid was such a wonderful host; suggesting local restaurants and activities and telling us about the property and the nearby town. We enjoyed our stay so much and would recommend this place to everyone. This is such a unique and peaceful place to enjoy nature and experience Costa Rica. We got a chance to enjoy some of the fruit that grows on the property, play in the river and feed the monkeys! We saw toucans in the trees and many different types of frogs!

Ingrid is a terrific host and I loved being at the finca (I actually ended up staying longer than planned.) The guesthouse is exactly as pictured, perfect for a couple or small family. Ingrid went above and beyond my expectations to make sure that I had a good experience in Aguas Zarcas. We walked around her property and across the river. I went in the river for an incredible cool-down when it was hot. We went to local places to hike in the rainforest and swim in the river. She took me to the local hot springs. And all the tourist attractions of La Fortuna/Arenal are within easy driving distance, although I saw more animal life at Ingrid's place than I did anywhere else. A small group of monkeys came through daily, looking for banana handouts, which they will take from your hand. There are all types of birds at her place. Every morning I sat on the porch drinking my coffee and watching hummingbirds fly and perch in the tropical flowers surrounding the guest house. I probably could have spent all my time watching birds and lying in a hammock reading with the constant sound of the rushing river in the background. Very relaxing. But there are too many other things to see and do. I can't recommend this place strongly enough. It is best to have a car in order to get to any tourist attractions you might want to see, or restaurants or shopping. It is possible to use the bus, but much more convenient to drive. Ants are a nuisance, but I found that to be true elsewhere in Costa Rica. (It is the tropics, after all.)

We stayed in several places during our trip to Costa Rica and this was our favorite by far. Not just the value in price, which was appreciated, but the energy of Finca Isle is so special. We were sad not to meet Ingrid & Josh as they were visiting family in Germany but they were both very responsive in communications prior and during our stay there. Their sweet dog, Canela was a great host as were their friends, Alyssa & Nuva. Pictures and words do not do this place justice. I loved that our casita was on the corner closest to the river. Hearing it all day was so soothing. The property is lush with a huge variety of plant/wildlife and well maintained. Love that we could just walk out our front door and start hiking and swimming. The patio is great for lounging, reading, and dreaming. My favorite were the big windows that opened up to the most stunning views. The mountain air was fresh and rejuvenating. The home itself has everything you need and is spacious, warm and cozy. I had the best sleep there. The town is less than a 3 minute drive. Restaurants are plentiful and delicious. We did the zip lining in La Fortuna and it was stunning!! Highly recommended. Lots to explore and do all under an hour drive away. I can't thank Ingrid & Josh enough for sharing Fina Isle with others. It's truly a gem.

We stayed at Finca Isla for a long weekend and it was perfect! From the very beginning, Ingrid was easy to communicate with and helped us figure out logistics to and from SJO. Josh picked us up from the airport and showed us some beautiful waterfalls and birds along the way. The finca itself was paradise. The casita was beautiful and clean. Our days consisted of multiple dips in the beautiful spring fed rivers that line both sides of their property, hikes through their impressive reforestation project, and relaxing in the hammocks that line the front porch amidst their beautiful gardens. They even showed us how to get to hike to the hot springs that only the locals know of. The town of Aguas Zarcas itself is not on the traditional tourist circuit but has so much to offer -- we had the best casado of our trip at La Guarita. If you want a great place to relax and get off the beaten path I highly recommend this!

Ingrid User ProfileIngrid is a superhost.

My husband Josh and I are living part time on our 80 acre reforestation farm in Costa Rica. We enjoy watching monkeys, birds and other wildlife from our front porch. I am a certified yoga instructor, do aquarelle painting, and hike in the virgin rainforest on our farm. We eat whole foods, exercise daily outdoors and practice non invasive health optimization therapies (infra red, ozone and PEMF).
