Set on an idyllic mountain with beautiful views of valley and sea, small stone rustico with a wood burning stove, roof window for watching stars, 1 double bed on platform I single day bed below, outdoor kitchen and covered roof terrace, solar phone/tablet charger and solar fridge. shower, compost loo with great views

The space

Enjoy total relaxation, getting back in tune with nature, staying in this basic but comfortable, quirky eco dwelling, which has been personally developed with this in mind. The rustico sleeps 2 to 3 , and there's a lovely tee-pee dome tent with real mattresses for 2 to 3 additional guests, the tent is big and roomy, this is all set in the owners tranquil olive grove in the Ligurian mountains.

From the dwelling there are spectacular views of the valley and the ocean beyond and a roof window that let's in natural light during the day and the night sky with a miriad of stars after sunset. There's an outdoor kitchen to make the most of the glorious weather (although indoor facilities are available) there is a wood burning stove and availability of hot showers, solar fridge for ice cold drinks, solar charger for phones and devices and free WiFi there is however no electricity, candle light being preferred which adds to the magical night time ambience of this special place. There is a secluded compost toilet with amazing views.... giving a whole new meaning to the word contemplating.

Although secluded and peaceful it's just a 30/40 min walk down a lovely walking track to the town of Ceriana, which is like stepping back to an Italy in time with it's 12th century architecture, maze of alleyways and piazzas, yet enough shops, bars and eateries to meet all requirements. A natural swimming pool too with a delightful view to town.

It is also a great hiking area, with the Mediterranean sea being just 6 miles away and at the top of the atmospheric valley is the beautiful old druid village of Baiardo, where the alpine views are such they take the breath away.

The owner lives on the land in a strawbale/cob roundhouse and is a quirky pleasant gentleman who gave up his life in Industry a few years ago to follow a more sustaining and sustainable way of living. He found here such a place of beautiful and natural surroundings it's almost hard to believe, and he loves to share this place with others.

Guest access

Full access to land.

Other things to note

We have a little white dog who is deaf and very friendly, but if your allergic or don't like dogs he'll keep his distance :)

This year is the biannual Ceriana art and music festival from 22h July to 1st August which is stunning, so a good time to visit.

And during the summer at weekends there always eclectic music festivals and theatre shows in the piazza.

If you want to come and there are more than 3 people, a tent is available at no extra charge, sleeps 3 on real mattresses with duvets, and is located next to the rustico.

This is a special place to enjoy and unwind. Alan and his dog Milou made us most welcome, collected us from the airport and were on hand to help with less familar jobs- like lighting the fire to warm the water for the shower. We specally loved the peace, the view across to the mountains of Corsica, cooking over the fire in the evening, the panoramic view from the open-air toliet and shower, freshly picked figs, the walk down to Ceriaina, the walk up, plunging into the cool pool in the village, the sound of the church bells and of the brass band practicing in the valley.

For anyone seeking an intimate, peaceful and certainly romantic time surrounded by a South-Italian mountain scenario with Olive trees, Fig trees and rocks will love this rustico! The facilities are basic but with some extra effort or the help of Alan you will easily find everything required to create a little culinary fiest (bbq, pizza oven, fridge). If the stunning view from the kitchen, dinner table, shower and even compost toilet is not enough you are free to explore a multitude of options. The area allows for hrs long hikes up hill to enjoy a view overlooking mountains and the sea. Downhill you even find a small river with plenty of hidden and idyllic spots and a natural pool. Alan is a very skilled host. For us he found the perfect balance between helping us out whenever needed and giving us privacy. You are well advised to follow his suggestions regarding the best spots in the area since they really helped us to have a unique perspective on this beautiful town of Ceriana as well as the little mountain village Bajardo from which you will have a marvelous view on both the Alps and the sea. Thank you Alan for this amazing time!

Since the description of Alan´s place has been very good and precise already, we (2 friends and 2 kids -8 years old) were only surprised in a really positive way. It is difficult to capture the peaceful and magical atmosphere of this place in fotos or words. For the kids - this is the list of the best things about this place: 1. the sweet dog Milou 2. the natural pool in the valley 3. the delicious ice cream parlour in Ceriana (try "Marron Glacé" if you get the chance) 4. Alan, our wonderful host (sorry, Alan, its tough to be mentioned after the ice cream - but you know what they are like)..our car-ride with Alan up the steep and impossible track 5. playing "stone age people" on the big rocks behind the shower ..and for us grown ups: the quiet peaceful atmosphere, being so close to nature all the time, no cars, no electricity, no unwanted disturbance but observing the moon wandering from one side of the valley to the other, the sound of wind in the olive trees, cooking outside, baking pizza in Alan´s self made oven and realizing how little we need to be happy. Alan has been the best host you can imagine - very friendly, caring - present but always discreet and very helpful. When the motor of our car suddenly made strange sounds and behaved unusual he even offered to take a look at it and diagnosed the problem right away. So, we think you can ask Alan probably anything and he might have the answer. Personally, I think the biggest luxury of all was the open air shower underneath the big rock. When are you able to take a shower and be instantly dried by the morning sun while having the most amazing view down the valley and onto the medieval village of Ceriana? So, to sum it up: If you get the chance, go!

Our time at Alan's was amazing. If you like to be in the nature and don't mind being a little bit away from everyday's trouble, it's the perfect place to be. Up on the hill you can really calm down but Ceriana and the area around San Remo also have a lot of amazing places to discover. Alan had many very good tips for us and was always helpful with everything. The accomodation is super beautiful if you're into DIY and ecological living and the description and comments are desciribing the location pretty precisely. The highlight is the most beautiful view that you have during cooking, eating, even from the toilet and the outdoor shower. It's amazing what Alan created up there. Our only troubles were the mosquitos, but that's the price you have to pay when you want to be in nature. It was still amazing to sit outside watching the impressive night sky over Liguria. We were two people staying in the Rustico and because we had some luggage it was a little cozy. But if you're three people or more you can easily set up the tent outside which should be no problem as well. Alan is a real host by the truest meaning of the word. He is extremly helpful, taking us up to the lot with his car whenever we needed to. So you can plan your daytime activities however you like. We also really enjoyed sitting down with him for a drink or toying around with little Milou. We discovered this place by chance but were immediately struck by the beauty of the olive grove and Ceriana and its inhabitants. To us it was a little bit like having holidays with friends.

This place is utterly beautiful surrounded by pristine nature and open sky! If you ever wondered what it's like to live in an olive garden by the Italian coast, this is your chance. However, you must be prepared for this rustic beauty to really enjoy the remoteness and basic living in/with the nature. It's not an easily accessible place, especially if you have a lot of things to carry with you. You must know that you can't bring your own car as this place is connected by two narrow bridges and roads aren't properly maintained. You can either hike up and down (takes 30 leasure minutes downhill) or walk (I didn't walk, but it could be about an hour?) to his place from the town (where you will park your car). However Alan is there with his car (sturdy with dents) to give you a ride with your stuff (which we also did), takes about 15 minutes. Make sure you bring a mosquito net and insect repellant (you are in nature after all) for a good night sleep. And it helps to shower in the natural swimming pool near the village or in the ocean nearby to conserve the water in the guest house. Because there is no running water, Alan has to bring water from the village in his car. The open air compost toilet is maintained properly so it's not smelly at all, and I think it comes with the best view while minding a very personal business. The best selling part Alan's place is that the simplicity with a touch of basic comfort to really appreciate the most valuable things in life: a comfortable bed, a brick oven to make pizza, a solar powered little fridge to keep your beer and wine cool while you sit under the olive trees and take it all in with the spectacular view of the setting sun, the distance ocean, and the town of Ceriana and just get cozy with your loved ones by the fire.

Alan's place in Ceriana is one the most unique Airbnb's I've ever experienced. Situated in the hills high above this quaint 11th century town you will find Alan's charming and rustic cottage. It is a great way to disconnect and enjoy some time to yourself. I would highly recommend staying here.
