We had a wonderful time staying in this charming, lovingly and individually designed cottage. Claude and Daniel are very nice people who didn't stop surprising us with lovely minor and major attentions, like the high quality tasty home made organic wine, the grapes, the donkey walk and in my case (since I fit into the children's saddle ;)) the donkey ride and oh, I almost forgot the freshly laid eggs from their chickens for breakfast! The apartment is situated in an appealing sleepy little very French village in the region of the famous Corbières wines, of which Daniel's is such a wonderful and special example. Although most of the rivers and streams are dried out this time of year (September), the environment is beautifully green and lush, perfect for long or short hikes in various grades of difficulty. Also is there is an abundance of amazing historical Places to go visit at acceptable car distances like the city of Perpignan, the town of Narbonne and the medieval town of Carcassonne and many other historical sites like castles, churches and monasteries. And last but not least: the beach, a thirty minute drive away.

When you stay at Claude et Daniel's maison it isn't just a house rental--it's an unforgettable experience. Our stay felt like we were home. Claude et Daniel are exceptional and generous hosts. I mentioned we wanted to celebrate Neil's birthday and end our two month holiday in a quiet village and setting; and in the fridge we had a bottle sparkling wine and small fruit cake waiting for us to celebrate. A day later Daniel shared a bottle of his delicious home-made wine. Not to mention a special tour of the vinyard, the cave, and an introduction to all the animals (salut Charlie, Gizmo, Jethro, Pilou). The house was clean and well equipped. The kitchen is small and easy to keep clean but large enough to cook meals as we did for breakfast, lunch, dinner. The water pressure in the shower is excellent and the shower space is generous. We used one of the three moderate sized bedrooms--we were comfortable and slept soundly every night. The only sounds in the mornings were of the swallows tending to their chicks. Or the bread delivery truck (.85 centimes as of this writing) when I slept in past 8AM. La maison des remparts is locted in a quiet residential Mediterranean village. We arrived on a particularly hot day but the large windows to the back and front of the maison kept the house cool. We had access to a small sitting area where we had a few meals in the cool shade of an almond tree. There is plenty of parking just across la maison as well as a clothes line to dry laundry. We experienced delightful interactions with the local villagers that truly made our holidy complete. We spent our holiday walking the village roads that take you to many vinyards, and olive orchards. St. Jean de Barrou does not feel touristy, situated between Durban-Corbieres and the beaches (Leucate is only about 30 minutes away and the drive is beautiful). I was truly sad on departure day, choking up as we turned in the key to Daniel (and for a good part of the drive out of town); but Neil and I know that one day we will return.

Merci!

Claude Et Daniel User ProfileClaude Et Daniel is a superhost.
