Location

Apsley, Ontario, Canada

Nestled in the North Kawarthas; 50 minutes to Peterborough/Bancroft; 20 minutes to Apsley/Coe Hill

Just across the road from beautiful Chandos Lake, boasting 264 KM of stunning shoreline . To be clear though, there is no water view from the house as the shoreline across the road is lined with trees. There is water view just a 4 minute walk - in either direction from the chalet, and access to the lake is just a short walk down the road to a small beach/boat launch.

Fresh country air, spectacular wildlife, lakes and rivers in every direction - excellent fishing, hunting, snowmobiling, snow shoeing, cross country skiing and tobogganing

Various options nearby for boats, canoes, kayaks and snowmobile rentals

Surrounded by 100's acres and 100's of kilometres of awesome snowmobile trails

Dark night skies showcase brilliant moons and make for awesome star gazing

Walking distance to FREE, small public beach / boat launch for smaller boats. There are no services at this beach, and it's not nearly as nice as Chandos Beach, but it is does provide quick, easy and close access to the water.

14.6 kilometres to Chandos Beach - a huge, gorgeous, FREE public beach with a roped off swimming area, large sandy beach, change rooms, portable toilets, picnic tables, and a boat launch.

Marina with canoe & kayak rentals, as well as fishing boats, pontoon boat and bowriders - just one minute down the road from Chandos Beach

Golf course, conservation area and hiking trails within 15 minute drive

Apsley has a Foodland, LCBO, gas station, Timbermart and Home Hardware, a corner store & bakery, library, bank, a couple of restaurants, a medical & dental centre and a couple of real estate offices, marinas and retail outlets

Coe Hill also has a restaurant or two, library and liquor store, among other small retailers

TRUTHFULLY, things are generally more expensive in cottage country, you have fewer choices, things close early, and bars and restaurants are far and few between. The Fat Squirrel experience is best enjoyed by taking day trips out, and chilling at home at night. Bring your food and beverages, grab something for the grill, relax on the deck, watch the birds, chill by the campfire, check out the awesome stars, and indulge on the property where you don't need to drive back in the dark afterwards.

I love to travel ... got started late in life ... can't get enough of it ... and do it on the ultra cheap. Countries I've been to include : Vietnam; Cambodia; Thailand; St. Lucia; Dominica; Belize; Honduras; Guatemala; Costa Rica; Ecuador; Venezuela; Cuba; Mexico; the United States and Canada. I've travelled on my own, and with others. I prefer to source out the cheapest flight I can, find the least expensive accommodations, take the local transportation, and eat at the local restaurants - rather than an all-inclusive holiday. I love the country, the outdoors, all of nature's wildlife. I feed the birds, I love to snorkel and scuba dive (in warmer climates!), and put layers and layers of clothing on to go snowmobiling, snow shoeing, skiing or tobogganing. I've met incredibly interesting and diversified people everywhere I've been, made friends and acquaintances in several countries, and I look forward to hosting adventurous travellers from around the world . I don't tweet, text, or use any social media other than e-mail - I don't even want, or own a cell phone! (but your devices will work at my place) My favourite music is country, or country blues, or blues - but appreciate other formats. I laugh and learn from Trevor Noah on the Daily Show, and really loved Stephen Colbert on the Colbert Report. My favorite television networks are the CBC and BBC. It's nice to visit friends in the city, get great shopping deals, and treat myself to vast array of international cuisine ... but the traffic and congestion and concrete jungle sends me quickly back home to the peace and quiet and beauty of the country ... where the birds sing, the wind blows clean air, and the chickadees land right in your hand. The country is where my heart is ... and I look forward to sharing the incredible beauty of this particular corner of the Kawarthas with other nature-loving travellers.
