Várzea da Gonçala nestles in the steep-sides Cerca valley. 6km from the small castled town of Aljezur, and 15km from some of the finest and cleanest beaches of Portugal. We are a permaculture-based project whose intent is to develop a beautiful and productive landscape, in which adult and children alike can enjoy a creative life.
Features which make a family holiday special here, are a diverse childrens' play area, with tree-house, large trampoline, swings and slides, and other hand-made features.
There is a river-bathing pool all summer, marked walking trails, excellent bird-life, lots of fresh organic vegetables from the garden, and fruit from the developing food-forest when in season.
The air is the cleanest in Europe, and our valley does not have a through-road, so traffic is minimal.
All guests are more than welcome to have a guided tour of the land, and the results of our work on the land, which is continuously ongoing.
There is a picture diary of our project on the Blog, now over 4 years of continuous entries, which is accessed from our web site.
Please note also that the toilet facilities in the house is for liquids only, with paper to be put in the bin provided. We have composting toilets close to the house for solid waste. This is a clean, 100% recycling process, without need for excess water or expensive treatment elsewhere. The solids are covered with a little saw-dust and the natural digestion makes an earthy compost in 6 months, used for planting trees.
We have no fences or boundaries, and guests are welcome to explore all parts of Várzea da Gonçala, while respecting of course the space around personal homes. There are maps to show walking tracks, and also signs to direct you.
