Elmwood cottage, set back from the street. 10-12 min walk to UC Berkeley campus. Conveniently close to Willard Park, Whole Foods, CVS pharmacy, Telegraph Ave stores & cafes. Renovated with style! Ideal for 1-2 people.

The space
The Space
Are you visiting Berkeley to study, work, teach, take a sabbatical, visit friends or family, attend a conference? It doesn’t matter! Whatever brings you to Berkeley, this conveniently-located "south" cottage (one of two) should meet your needs.

The Space:

This "south" cottage is one of two which are set back from the street, at the rear of the property, behind a majestic old house built in 1907. Stylishly furnished and decorated with vaulted ceilings, many windows – including greenhouse windows in the kitchen and bathroom – skylight, etched glass mirrors, hardwood floors, granite and marble tile in the bathroom, and indirect mood lighting. It’s small (400 sq ft) and charming, with efficient use of space – for example, storage drawers underneath the bed and recessed shelving in the bedroom. Wi-fi and cable TV are included. On-site laundry facilities are a few steps away. One off-street parking space is available right outside the entrance.

The living room has a comfortable cushy sofa, coffee table and flat-screen TV. The eat-in kitchen includes a dishwasher, microwave, coffee maker, cooking equipment, dishes, glasses and utensils. The bedroom has a queen-size bed; all bedding is included. The bathroom has a full-size tub, over-the-tub shower, classic white Carrera marble tile walls, and even granite artwork in the floor.

The Neighborhood:

The apartment is in the desirable and interesting Elmwood residential district, 1 block from Telegraph Avenue and 2 blocks from College Avenue. The UC Berkeley campus is a 10 minute walk (5 blocks).

It’s close to numerous ethnic and specialty restaurants (Italian, Indian, Nepalese, Ethiopian, French, Japanese, burgers, pizza, Swiss-style fondue, Thai, Chinese, Korean barbecue, a Subway), coffee houses, bookstores, vintage clothing stores, music stores, and student hangouts on Telegraph Avenue. A large CVS pharmacy is a block away, and Whole Foods is 4 minutes by car or a 12 minute walk (5 blocks).

Access:

There are buses on Telegraph or College Avenues to downtown Berkeley, BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit system), Oakland and San Francisco. The Claremont Hotel & Conference Center is just over a mile away. There is freeway access either at Telegraph Avenue & 55th Street (about 2 miles) or Ashby Avenue (about 3 miles) where you can drive to San Francisco, Oakland, Marin County & the Golden Gate Bridge, Napa Valley, and Lake Tahoe. Twenty minutes driving (outside rush hours!) will take you to San Francisco across the Bay Bridge, or if you take BART from the downtown Berkeley or Ashby St station, it’s about a 20 minute ride to SF.

Two bikes are available for use - ask about these when you check in.

Interaction:

Our delightful and energetic managers Binyam and Bruk (originally from Ethiopia) know this property well; they used to live in the cottage, and Binyam did the recent renovation work. Now they live only a block away. One or both of them will welcome you when you arrive and will be available (as I will) during your stay by phone or e-mail to answer any questions. Otherwise, you will have the place to yourself and won’t be disturbed.

The fine print:

• Minimum stay 14 days
If you stay 30 nights or more you will not have to pay the Berkeley 12% occupancy tax.
• Maximum of 2 people
• No smoking of any kind in the cottage or anywhere else in or around the building - the front steps, the laundry room, and the grounds! It's simply against the law: the City of Berkeley prohibits smoking anywhere in multi-unit buildings (there is a common wall shared with the adjoining cottage, so it classifies as multi-unit). We also prohibit vaping (e-cigarettes) because it creates many of the same issues as second-hand cigarette smoke.
• Please, no parties or loud noise – this is a quiet residential neighborhood, and we (and our neighbors) want to keep it that way!
• Our rates are all-inclusive. We pay the Berkeley business license tax, but it is not charged to you.
• Sorry, no pets.
•For residential purposes only (home office OK).

Born in England, now living in California for many years. Two (!!) graduate degrees from UC Berkeley. I have been an Airbnb guest in the US and several other countries and have appreciated the experience of staying in a real home, a place with warmth and character, in an interesting walkable neighborhood. That’s what my co-host (my husband Jack) and I offer you, too, in Berkeley – a vibrant town with an internationally renowned university, distinctive architecture, innovative restaurants, serious coffee houses, bookstores, parks, museums, theater, a lively music scene – and conveniently close to San Francisco.
