It's a lovely, quiet, self-contained room, with kitchenette, bathroom and its own front porch. It has two king-single beds, a fridge, a microwave, a heater, a fan, a hair-dryer, a DVD player and WIFI...You wake to the sound of the river, within a stone's throw, and birdsong....

The space
Murchison is a little mountain village at the western end of the Four Rivers Plain, on the way to "everywhere..." (an hour and a half from Nelson or the West Coast, three and a half hours from Christchurch). There are eight rivers weaving through this valley among the mountains. It's one of the gateways to Kahurangi National Park. It's also the whitewater capital of New Zealand - with kayaking, whitewater rafting, bush tramps, gold-fossicking and, arguably, some of the best brown trout fishing the country has to offer...

Guest access
The apartment has its own entrance, key and porch - only the carpark is shared. There's a sun umbrella and easy chairs behind a private fence. No pets are permitted in the apartment, nor off the lead on the property at any time. Pets may overnight on the porch if caged or tied - there is ample shelter.

Other things to note
There are great hikes and bikes to enjoy, when you're not falling down rivers! We are only 30 minutes drive from The Old Ghost Trail - an extraordinary, exhilarating mountain bike ride through spectacular surroundings! And the Kahurangi National Park has some amazing tramps and walks...

Location

Murchison, Tasman, New Zealand

The Front Room is walking distance to all of Murchison, and looks out on paddocks, poplars, beeches and willows leading down to the river. This little settlement is surrounded by mountains and, sometimes, mist which loops the bush-covered hills like a river ghost. In winter, we have frosts and snow - in summer, the temperature can soar above 35 under a bright, cloudless sky.
Murchison (permanent pop. 490-ish) has cafes, a museum, a kayak school, a butcher with the best bacon in the South Island, a patisserie with a wonderful French pastry chef, white-water rafting on NZ's longest untamed river, a swing bridge (just down the road) and there's gold in them thar rivers...!

We lived and worked happily for over 20 years in the city (Auckland), and now we've chosen somewhere cleaner, quieter, more sustainable, and with a bigger sky. Murchison ticks every box. We're on 2.5 acres, drinking filtered rain-water, growing our own vegetables, splitting and stacking our own firewood - and watching the light play on the hills, the colours glow and dim, and the clouds create fantastical echoes of the mountains. This is a space to kick back and discover peace. We love it. We'd love our guests to have that feeling, too... whether on a stopover for a few days, en route, or at the end of a wild day kayaking or rafting. Of course, fishing and tramping and simply exploring deserve their own quiet finale. Wine on the porch, perhaps?
