Cynthia and Rai are really kind and sweet loving people. When I wanted extra sheets, they provided sheets and ensured I had everything I asked for. If you want great friendly people, this is the place to stay. They've got the customer service down; HOWEVER, the place is not clean. I had planned to stay for a month and I was so excited for my first air B and B but it was a nightmare due to cleanliness. Dust everywhere, unclean drawers (hair, mouse poop, light bulbs...I had signed up to stay for a month and couldn't empty my clothes) dirty bathroom, flies in the house at night, socks turned black. If you want to feel comfortable during your stay, this is not the place to stay. They are wonderful, kind hearted people and it hurts me to write this review but the two nights I ended up staying here was a nightmare.

Cynthia and Rai were gracious hosts. Their place was comfortable and convenient to downtown Detroit. We greatly appreciated the breakfast and snack items. They were flexible and allowed for a late check out. Cynthia and Rai are a great mother-daughter team!

Cynthia was so warm and welcoming. Her extended family lives on the same street and it almost felt like the whole family was welcoming me into their home. Cynthia provided yogurts, bananas, waters, and made sure I was comfortably settled before leaving. She was even thoughtful enough to leave me a gift. I was delightfully surprised. While she is definitely making some improvements to her lovely home, her genuine hospitality and amazing communication make her a fantastic host.

Our hosts met us personally to welcome us, and very thoroughly gave us a rundown of all the important things about the house. The neighborhood was a typical Detroit neighborhood. This means there are extremely nice people on the street, but there are a few empty houses as well. We felt very safe. The neighborhood is right outside Grosse Pointe. Which was great for us because we were really close to the people we were visiting. The house is very old. It is clear that money has been spent to get the house up to code, but in doing so that means some other things haven't been gotten to yet. I have feeling over the years if they continue to rent this house out it will get better and better. I have a soft spot for turn of the century homes. They had plenty of toiletries available for guests and did all of the cleaning. I only wish that they had either a king or a twin and a queen in the master bedroom. Detroit rarely gets hot so air conditioning is not usually necessary, but the weekend we were there just happened to be a really hot weekend. So we were a little hot at night. I would rent from Rai and Cynthia again in a second. They are wonderful warm welcoming people. Mama's place was a good place to stay.

We really enjoyed our stay at Mama's place. Cynthia and Rai were very welcoming, we had the whole house to ourselves, the rooms are just like in the profile picture, and they even had the kitchen stocked with stuffs for light breakfast. Downtown was easily accessible both by bus and Uber. We felt really at home here. We sure will be staying here again next time we come to Detroit!

Cynthia + Rai User Profile

Our names are Rai and Cynthia, a mother-daughter duo wanting to bring greater awareness and longevity to the city we have known and loved our entire lives: Detroit. Rai (daughter) enjoys dancing, reading, and yoga, and is currently working on becoming a flight attendant. Cynthia (mom), recently received her Ph. D in Educational Leadership, and strongly advocates for revitalization efforts in Detroit. Together we wanted to create a space that allowed us to show some fine city hospitality to weary travelers, while also allowing us to continue to strengthen revitalization efforts within our community.
