Otter Haven offers 200 acres of privately cultivated WI wildlife, 1 mile of it bordering the Namekagon River. Trails have been forged and maintained all throughout the land, and a pond and island complex outside the Guest House also anticipate your curiosity. A canoe, kayak, and tubes are ready and willing to adventure with you! Within the Guest House a spacious Great Room, a full kitchen, luxurious shower, and sleep space for 12, or just 2, are primed and plush for your pausing pleasure.

The space

Welcome to Otter Haven, 200 acres of original and restored prairie (started in 1975) of Wisconsin’s native fauna and flora, as well as a restful retreat for guests escaping the daily grind. Whether you’d like to stroll through the low meadow grasses and wildflowers, or wander about the oak Savannah, take a leisurely tube down the Namekagen River, or fish the spring-fed ponds, we’re confident the natural charm will beset you. You might then pull out an old sketchpad, or paints, or bring along your photography skills. Perhaps you’d prefer the classic canoe, outdoor fire-pit, and s’mores, or rather an old-fashioned exploration of new knolls, islands, and wooded trails. If you’re inquisitive enough, and still enough, you’ll find our other regular residents: Deer and Heron, Otter and Beaver, Raven, Fox, Eagle, and Squirrel. Each trail offers its own discoveries and delights - like a traditional Native American Earth Lodge on one of our 5 islands, or a riverview outcropping of 6 oak trees perfectly situated to watch the river flow. So, wander as you will, you never know what you'll find.

Guest access

We welcome you to our meadows and knolls, oak savanna, ponds, islands, traipsing trails, and river landing. We'll even scoot you into the creek in one of our canoes! For the curious one, there is much to be discovered here. For the one seeking a quiet but colorful repose, Otter Haven is well suited to you.

Interaction with guests

We will receive you with warm welcome, provide you a tour of the cabin for your stay, as well as a map and offered tour of the property. We will leave you to your vacation, but are available on property to assist you if need be.

Other things to note

We will do our best to contact you in person when you make an inquiry so that we can discuss whatever questions you may have.

The pictures definitely don't do this place justice. It was beautiful all around! Would absolutely come back again!

Very lovely place. The owners have put a LOT of work into recreating an oak savanah prairie as Wisconsin would have looked hundreds of years ago. Christina is a very pleasant hostess and has outfitted the house so you really don't need to leave unless you need food supplies. Sunsets And sunrises with the birds chirping in place of wifi, emails and TV are a welcome respite which allowed us and our teenage children to get closer for at least a few wonderful relaxing days. The location is well situated if you like outdoor activities. In 5 days we fished, swam, hiked, biked, fly-fished, canoed on their pond and kayaked the river for 3 hours. If you are looking for awesome shopping between the peaceful moments at the cabin, forget it. Not much shopping available in the area. Hayward, about 10 miles away, is a cute town, has some nice museums, pubs and trinket shopping.

First, the photos and description do not do this property justice. The cottage is roomy and the property is absolutely stunning! Even if you aren't a nature buff the beauty of the flowers, the hills, the pond are a wonder to be hold. Honestly, I have never seen anything like it! The prairie was in a fantastic bloom. Flowers I have never seen before (and I am a nature buff). On our walks we walked through a fern gully...honestly, a FERN GULLY! Perfectly lovely. If you go, you must go on the well managed trails and take it in. It was worth battling the mosquitoes and I'd do it again! The great room is fabulous with the vaulted ceiling and all the windows. The table was enormous and fit all of us. There were 10 of us (1 kid and 9 adults) and there was plenty of space for all of us. We never run out of hot water (which is a huge bonus!) even though we all took showers one after the other. The bathroom is super nice! The kitchen was just right and the fridge held all our food for the weekend with some room to spare. The big bedroom was very comfortable. My parents slept in there and said the bed was very comfortable. The pond...I don't think there are human words to describe how we all loved it! It is right outside the door. Swimmable (yes, there are some weeds but it wasn't bad for the end of July). Little minnows everywhere, surrounded by prairie flowers made it so very quaint and picturesque. We took to the VERY comfy tubes and floated for an hour at a time. The kid (she's 12) kayaked every day around the pond and through the little water ways along with someone following her in the 3 person canoe. Again, just right outside the door! We were only there a few days and didn't make it to the river but the pond filled the requirement of "water time". Above an beyond what we hoped for. One tip...bring bug spray. The mosquitoes are very hungry and they liked me the most. We did take a journey into Hayward (just a 15 minute drive from the (URL HIDDEN) get more bug spray). It has everything! There is a Walgreens, a couple of grocery stores, coffee shops, tons of thrift shops, candy and popcorn and ice cream shops and a fish museum! Half the group went to the museum. They have a huge fiberglass musky you can walk through...must see! Even though you are very secluded in the cottage you aren't that far from civilization! Christina was a lovely host. You cannot find a more kind person. She truly wanted our visit to be the best. Fantastic communicator! She checked in on us but wanted to give us our space too. (and her son is adorable!) My daughter cried when we (URL HIDDEN) was sad to leave so soon. Alas, we did not see an otter...

This was a lovely house with lots of space, and plenty of beds for our 10 person group. There is a great fire pit, and a good yard for hanging out and playing games. The host was extremely attentive and checked in with us several times during our stay to ensure we had everything we needed.

Otter Haven was the perfect getaway for us! We very much enjoyed the trails, the creek, and ecological tour. (Damian has so much knowledge of the land and his family history is so interesting! We learned a lot!) The wildflowers are gorgeous and surround the cabin beautifully. The firepit is in just the right spot to enjoy the sunset views. The home has a wonderful great room and is well taken care of. I think we all went "wow!" as we walked in the door! We had three families (6 kids and 6 adults total) and found it comfortable for everyone. Christina kept in contact with us throughout our weekend stay. She was very attentive to our needs and answered all of our (many!) questions.

When the cold of a snow covered season tucks one inside, the persistent arrival of spring comes with such relief,...and then delight that bursts with summer's sunlight - onto our guests! We love the serene but vibrant getaway we have to offer our visitors - because we find it such a getaway ourselves! We've been known to plop in a tube, a canoe, or kayak, and laze down the Namekagon; or pack a weekly picnic and bike, or hike, or toss out a fishing line! We hope our love for our home catches you too - bringing you laughter, delight, and freshness to life!
