Park for free

This is one of the few places in the area with free parking.
Imagine levitating over the forest, resting on your back and contemplating the blue sky contrasting against the lush green leaves of the trees surrounding you.

We invite you to experience a different side of the Pupu Rangi Nature Sanctuary by staying a night or two in one of our tree tents. Set-up in secluded clearings, our comfortable tree tents bring you as close to nature as you can get.

The space
Located on the slopes of the Tutamoe Mountain, the Pupu Rangi Nature Sanctuary is home to a cloud-forest and a number of kiwi birds.

Nestled in the trees, you can defy gravity and examine closer the hundreds of varieties of moss, the stick insects, and the busy birds. In the evening, while listening for the haunting calls of the kiwi, fall asleep to the sounds of the forest. Wake up in the midst of the dawn chorus and have the whole day ahead of you to explore the trails in our jungle-like forest, to participate in one of the conservation activities, to visit the nearby Kauri Coast attractions, or to just pick up a book and spend a relaxing time rocking gently in the breeze.

If you are ready for a bit of fun and adventure, stay with us!

Guest access
Shared facilities (outdoor toilet, showers) and a communal area.

Other things to note
We are open during the southern summer (December to March).
The tents are located within 50m of the facilities
Breakfast is included in the price and a full board meal plan can be purchased onsite.

In the rare case of a major storm, we will have to take the tents down and relocate you to safer accommodation. We would normally be able to advise at least 24hrs in advance.

Where you’ll be

Kaihu, Northland, New Zealand

This is not the type of place where tour buses stop every hour or so. The Pupu Rangi Nature Sanctuary is located 250km from a crowded city, 50km from the closest supermarket, 2km from the next door neighbour, and at an arm's length from the Milky Way. For us, seeing two cars in a day is a traffic jam and being able to live in the middle of the forest is the ultimate lifestyle.
