About this listing

Wild Olive is a luxurious cottage, built in 1859, authentic on the outside, super modern inside. Set in beautiful gardens, quiet & private, yet walking distance from local restaurants, cafes & the Riesling Trail.

The space

The cottage was built in 1859, and is Heritage SA and National Trust listed. It has been through many lives over a hundred and forty years, including tea rooms, library, mechanics institute, sweet shop and a few others. The cottage has been extensively, and expensively, renovated to make it in to a luxury B&B and is designed to provide bliss and luxury for one couple.

Upstairs is a magnificent, Victorian antique, nickel and silver iron Queen-size bed. There is a luxurious black leather suite, with armchairs, and settee. The open fire is wonderful to sit round on cold nights, (iron combustion stove) and there is plenty of things to entertain yourself with- HDLCD TV, DVD, VCR, CD, tapes, a DVD movie library, games, books, etc. Within the cottage, there are some beautiful pieces of furniture and original artwork, much from local artists. Of special interest is an antique Polish love seat, made in the 1800’s about the same time as the cottage was built.

An internal metal spiral staircase joins the two floors. Down stairs you will find a fully equipped gourmand kitchen, the benches are topped with Mintaro slate and the cupboards are Blackwood. There is an under-bench oven, glass cook-top, microwave, draw dishwasher, the finest European glassware and crockery. From the dining area you look directly out of French glass doors on to the beautiful garden. Directly out of the French doors is a pagoda covered slate patio, with a teak outdoor setting, sun lounges, a market umbrella, a BBQ and some intriguing old farm implements- we are still not sure what they were for.

The cottage has a luxurious bathroom, fully tiled, with a beech-wood vanity topped with local Mintaro slate. There is a large, deep spa bath in which to luxuriate and the linen and robes supplied are all of the finest quality cotton.

Interaction with guests

Wild Olive Cottage is a self contained B&B. Generous provisions are left for guests to prepare their own breakfasts. Key details and directions provided upon booking. Hosts are not on site but readily available if needed.

We had a great time at Neil's place. Everything was as advertised. The breakfast supplies and cooking facilities were exceptional and the bottle of wine that awaited our arrival was an unexpected bonus. We would highly recommend staying here.

My partner and I had a fantastic stay in Auburn. The town is lovely and relaxed, it's a great base for exploring the Clare valley wineries. The accommodation was as described, a lovely romantic cottage. The food left for us was very decadent. The accommodation is a tradition BnB (in that it's not someone's home). The hosts Neil and Deb were really great, they answered all our questions promptly, yet still gave us plenty of privacy.

I have operated three B&Bs in the Clare Valley, South Australia for over twenty years. We made a tree change from Melbourne eight years ago and love to share this beautiful valley with others.
