Villa Pendio offers a beguiling mix of sun, sea and history.

The space

Perched atop a cliff, with sweeping views of the mountainous Amalfi Coast, the villa was originally a circular tower build more than 1,000 years ago, designed to let people know when pirates or other invaders were approaching.

The tower was renovated at the beginning of the 1900s to create a villa, with other rooms added later. Today Pendio is a three-story villa bathed in sunshine and nestled in abundant green growth, offering the same views that kept sentries alert from both its indoor and outdoor spaces.

One of the best places to admire the panorama is the terrace on top of the tower, which links to a smaller round terrace on top of a rocky ledge that juts out towards the sea. The view extends right down the coast as far as Capo di Conca Dei Marini, which has its own tower that stares back at its fellow sentry. Below guests can see a small bay whose waters can be deep blue, emerald green or completely transparent, depending on the time of day and different light conditions.

The villa boasts four separate view-endowed terraces – three shaded, one with a barbecue, one with an aboveground Jacuzzi and all with seating areas. The swimming pool is partly shaded by a pergola with bamboo roof and comes equipped with table, chairs, sun loungers and a swing.

Inside is the first living room, elegant with shiny blue tiles, a mixture of modern and antique furnishings, a fireplace, and dining table. There’s also a fully equipped kitchen and four bedrooms. A second living room is paved with shiny green tiles and has a panoramic window that opens onto partial sea views. A separate annex offers a third living room, with comfortable sofas and armchairs, and two bedrooms.

Unusual for the Amalfi coast, the villa has private parking and access to the grounds from the parking area without an arduous climb.

Only a couple of miles away is the town of Maiori, a popular resort since Roman times that today boasts a good selection of restaurants, bars and the longest beach on the Amalfi Coast.
