We are located about 10km south of Chiang Mai in Hang Dong about 15 minutes from the airport. Shopping, dining, wine bar (Kad Farang) are an easy bicycle trip away (20 minute walk) and there is a 25 meter swimming pool a 3 minute walk from our house. Probably best to have your own transportation or we can reserve car & driver. The rental house has a full-size pool/snooker table and out-door ping pong table available for guest use. 3 bicycles also available for guest use at no charge.

Guest access

You'll have a whole house to yourself with a snooker table and a ping pong table as well. You will also be welcome to relax in the sala (gazebo) in the garden between your house and our house.

Interaction with guests

We live next door and are available to help. We speak, English, Thai, German and some Spanish. My wife taught Thai cooking in the USA and will offer a course if guests are interested. You will shop in our local market and learn to make a meal with 3-4 Thai dishes.

Other things to note

We have local taxi and tour van contacts. If you do not wish to drive, we can arrange a car and driver for you, but request you give us one week's notice, since our preferred driver (van seats up to 9) is very busy. Full-day trips to local sights can be arranged.

House is well equipped for comfortable stay. Good for families with children, would recommend renting a car. John is very warm and attentive person and helped us solve many troubles we encountered with travel agencies or while renting a taxi. We had a lovely time in his home.

We had a great (and quiet stay) at John's very clean and comfortable home. The linens were comfortable and clean, the kitchen well-stocked and my family spent much of their free time playing pool. For those wanting to spend a lot of time in the "Old City" you should know that it is a 20 minute ride to town. There are plenty of other amenities nearby though. We have zero complaints and thoroughly enjoyed our time.

John and Phijitra were wonderful hosts and their house was fantastic! Highly recommend staying here. The house is in a nice neighborhood with easy close access to the supermarket, restaurants, markets, and not a bad drive up to Chiang Mai. John was available to us if we had any questions or needed anything, but gave us our privacy while we stayed. He also gave us suggestions on where to go and what to see, which was really helpful. My wife took Phijitra's Thai cooking class and had a lot of fun and learned a lot. Checking in and out was easy and painless. The house was clean and comfortable. The ping pong table, pool table, and bicycles were a nice extra touch! Thank you John and Phijitra!

John has a great house and great location to get around everywhere. The house is spotless and very comfortable. Traveling as a solo it was perfect for me to get some quiet time for myself as that is sometimes very hard to get. Yet John and his lovely wife are just next door and any question you have,John can answer. You can use his bikes to bike down to Kad Farang full of shops and eats, about a 8 minute bike ride--perfect! and safe. Easy to catch a bus into Chiang Mai. Consider yourself lucky to get this booking I think John underplays his description of his location and the comfort it provides, never mind the outstanding value.

Response from John:
Thanks Barbara, very kind words. Hope you found a nice retirement home in Chiang Mai for you and your husband. I'm sure we'll run into each other again in the expat community.

John's house was the perfect home away from home for our wonderful six night stay in the Hang Dong district of Chiang Mai. It is located in a beautiful and safe neighborhood, close to a fabulous shopping area with local and international cuisine. John recommended a little laundry business just down the street, which we were very happy to use and the prices were unbelievably inexpensive. He also arranged for us a driver for a day trip to Chiang Rai to visit the White Temple, with stops that included a coffee & tea plantation, as well as a local hot springs area. John was extremely personable and attentive to any need we had. We can't thank you enough for pointing us to the Baan Tawai craft, what a treat! The house was clean, spacious and we even enjoyed a few games of pool in the game room. Our stay was nothing less than perfect! Thanks John, for your warm hospitality!

We stayed here for 8 nights with our 3 children age 4, 8 and 10 and had the best time. John and Phijitra is a great couple to stay with. If you are looking for a nice place outside the center with plenty of space, great possibilities to explore the lokal area with bikes and easy acces to Chiang Mai with lokal bus, this is the place to stay. From the very first contact, they have been very helpfull and have organized ex. a privat driver for us, provided us with bikes and ideas for things to see and do. They also helped with transportation to the airport and ideas for restaurants which where great for families with kids. They had thought of things to do for a family with children and they had done a great job. With the use of the bikes we could get to a shoppingcenter / restaurant area / bus to Chaing Mai / handcraft village / lokal village within 10 min and the bikes had seats for children. The lokal bus to Chaing Mai was 20b for adults and 10 for children and we never waited more than a few minutes. The swimmingpool was very nice and clean. It costed 60b for adults and 40b for children. We had it all to ourself. The shopping center was very european. Nice groceries, but a bit expensive.

My wife (Phijitra, Thai) and I (John, USA) retired to Chiang Mai in the fall of 2014. We have owned our house (actually two houses separated by a garden) for many years, but this is the first year we have lived here year-round. We love Thailand and SE Asia and wanted to share our knowledge and insights with others, so we decided to list our guest house on Airbnb. We look forward to meeting many interesting people from all over the world.
