The space

My home is a late 19th century shotgun style home. Guests have use of front porch (and porch swing), large bright room with hardwood floors, high ceilings, ceiling fan and original mantelpiece, private bathroom with claw foot tub. It’s a small apartment at the front of my house, decorated with imagery of New Orleans culture such as, Mardi Gras Indians and Second lines. Mini fridge, microwave, and coffee maker provided. You won’t need a stove (you’re in New Orleans after all :-) and there are numerous cafes, restaurants and a corner grocery store all within 5 minute walking distance.
Your stay includes free Wireless Internet, TV with basic stations.
No smoking in the house. However, the front porch is an excellent place to smoke or enjoy a drink on the evening, or coffee in the morning.

Interaction with guests

This is a separate private accommodation; once I give you the key you do not need to see me, but of course feel free to text, or call, or knock on my door with any questions. (I’ll be in the back of the house.)

Other things to note

This area is relatively safe part of the city. A company, Metro, provides 24 hour security patrol in the neighborhood. I have lived happily and safely in the back half of the house for over 20 years. There is a small school playground in the block, so on weekday mornings kids may be heard outside after 8AM if its nice weather.

Excellent value. Very quiet. Close to great restaurants. Close to the street car. Had everything I needed.

Mary was a really thoughtful host and the place was charming. The only downside is that it's a bit far from the tourist sites. There are multiple bus stops very close by but the bus isn't super reliable. Overall, though, it was a great place and would definitely stay again!

Mary's place was in a great location. She was a gracious host, and even had a bottle of wine waiting in the room as well as a personalized note. The front porch is a dream, and the beds were oh so comfortable inside a cool room, a nice reprieve from the summer heat. I would highly recommend, and would definitely stay again. Thanks!

Mary was really communicative and the place was perfect for my friend and I. Great location, especially if you want to stay away from the French quarter. The neighborhood is very cute!

Thanks April. I hope you all come back another time.

Mary's house is excellent. The apartment is in front of her home, so you have privacy but she is nearby if you need anything (or forgot a hair dryer like I did). We each had a double bed (one is a sofa bed but comfortable). The kitchenette is great -- includes microwave and fridge. The location is awesome --- just one block from the bus stop and a few blocks from the street car. Plenty of food and shops nearby, and about a 20-min. bus ride to the French Quarter. Really nice to be able to get away from the crazy downtown and have a quiet home to return to at the end of the day. Would rather stay out here and enjoy the charm of a great neighborhood vs. staying downtown.

Great easy place, great value, all that you need, I especially liked a neat book about New Orleans homes and architecture through the years she had on the shelf.

This is a gem of a spot and Mary clearly knows how to make her guests feel comfortable and happy. A personalized welcome note, coffee, snacks and a nice bottle of wine awaited my arrival. I stayed for four nights and looked forward to returning home each night. The space couldn't be cleaner or better maintained. You will have a chance to meet Mary when she pops out to walk her dog or head to work and you will notice a warm, friendly, and welcoming person in her. You should also know that Mary is available via text or phone call should you need anything at all. I parked right in front of the home each night and walked two blocks in the morning for a spot in a cafe or to enjoy dinner at a James Beard Foundation award-winning restaurant. There really isn't anything else you could ask for. The only thing I can ask of you is to not book this spot on the days I hope to return. Enjoy!

Originally from the UK, I made New Orleans home over 20 years ago. I teach for a living which allows me to travel to other countries to experience the different art, architecture, food and culture in general. However, I'm always happy to come home to New Orleans which has its own unique rhythm and rich culture.
