Come to Curaçao to swim, snorkel, dive, explore - or simply relax and enjoy breathtaking ocean and mountain views - and discover the tropical paradise that inspired the owners to write the island's current best-seller, "The Navigator's Treasure".
Our home in the beautiful west of Curaçao is ideal for those who define vacation as setting their own pace, doing what they want when they want – and not a thing more. Rushing around to check off a list of "must-do" activities from a mega-resort concierge sounds too much like work. Isn't that what you're getting away from?
You can't resist falling in love with the island, and Westpunt in particular, just as we did. It took our breath away 10 years ago when we first rounded the horseshoe bend at Playa Forti and saw crystal-clear turquoise water lapping brightly colored fishing boats down in the bay. We sat on the rock wall 30' above the water until the sun slipped off the edge of the earth in a spectacular green flash – both of us swearing we heard a whisper, "If you come, we will build it." So we did, buying our first villa at Marazul Dive Resort the very next day.
Now we're back in a newly expanded and renovated apartment (with all the upgrades we coveted). Perched just 40' from the edge of the plateau, we enjoy our small gated resort's most expansive ocean-front view – 220 degrees of unobstructed Caribbean waters teeming with fish, turtles, dolphins, and every dream you could imagine.
Our place is literally our "home away from home" – we live here three or four months a year. That means everything, from furniture and mattress, widescreen TV and huge fridge, to cutlery and cushions, has home quality and comfort. Fact is, we actually handcrafted most of the furniture. A comfortable futon in the first floor living room accommodates an additional guest or family member.
We commissioned new wall-to-wall sliding glass doors, along with screened & louvered kitchen entry and side windows to take full advantage of the constant trade winds that cool the West without compromising security.
The lanai is ideal for breakfasts and watching the iguana wake up on the rock wall, while the upstairs balcony opens the view even more. We eat dinner there most nights, nursing our wine as the sky goes from screaming orange and pink to a breathless darkness peppered with silver stars.
Pluses include a new 42" flat-screen with Direct TV, DVD, our own dedicated wireless internet, new microwave, hot-water in kitchen and showers both upstairs and down, air conditioners & ceiling fans upstairs and down, writing table and large wood balcony dining table. Linens, bath and pool towels are also provided.
The cliff edge is just steps away from our lanai, while it's only a minute's stroll to the resort's salt-water pool, nestled among lush tropical plants – enough to be close, but far enough for optimum privacy and quiet. At each end of the resort's proscenium, stairs cut into the rock wall provide direct access to the sea. A few strokes into the ever-warm water take snorkelers over or divers into a reef so brilliant it entices adventurers from around the world.
There's so much to do, but if you want to spend your week or two just polishing your tan and your napping technique, no one will bother you. Perhaps you'll be inspired to sequester yourself and write a novel as we did. However, as vacationers seem constitutionally incapable of being anything but friendly, you're bound to meet new friends.
"Perambulating along the perimeter" at dusk is a Marazul tradition where everyone gathers, drink in hand, in hopes of catching the elusive, green flash at sunset. It's been the start of unforgettable evenings enlivened by green and yellow parakeets streaking across the sky, the scent of fresh wahoo crisping on the grill, the tang of lionfish ceviche accompanied by a chilled little white wine. As you'll come to say -- "It's just another day in Paradise."

We're a couple of writers (with two grown sons) whose passion for traveling began in college when we backpacked around Europe for months. After living in Boston, Philadelphia and Los Angeles, we returned to one of the most beautiful places anywhere, our hometown of Twin Mountain, New Hampshire. When not there, we can most often be found at our second home on the sunny Caribbean island of Curaçao. We're avid hikers, bicyclists, scuba divers, skiers, and recently walked the Camino de Santiago. In addition to writing, we've run large college-recruiting showcases for lacrosse and field hockey players. We often work 'on the road' so we can continue to see new places and return to old favorites. In addition to English, we speak a bit of French, German and muy poco Spanish.
