Located in the village of Tiagan at 1200 feet, the house looks over a sparkling ten-mile straight to Bali and to spectacular 10,000 foot Mount Agung.

The space
(Note:
A private, 12 meter, infinity pool at the edge of the ravine in the lower complex with a stunning view of Bali and Mount Agung was finished in mid September, 2018.)

My house consists of a 1000 square foot living room, dining room and kitchen. There are two bedrooms in an adjacent building and two full bathrooms, partly open-air in the Balinese tradition, one in the main building and the second off the bedrooms. The walls of both buildings are mostly glass with stunning views in all directions but especially so towards Bali to the north. Extraordinary sunsets occur most evenings. There is a queen size bed in each bedroom. In addition, there is a sofa bed in the living room.

There is also another bedroom building, which is entirely glass with minimal wood, about a three-minute walk from the main house, next to the pool on the edge of a ravine with a queen size bed and a sofa, which is also a single bed. The views from this location are, if anything, even more arresting than those from the main buildings above.

In addition there is in the complex above what is called a "jineng" by the Balinese. It is an open-sided platform with a thatch roof, which has a queen size mattress as well. Down below there is a balai, another open-air thatch roof platform that sits on the edge of the ravine. It is larger than the jineng and has two queen size mattresses. Both structures are excellent for naps, resting and reading, or even sleeping through the night. There is a full bathroom down below.

The ravine complex bedroom and bathroom are completely off-grid and solar-powered. There is a terrace the full length of the pool, with lounge chairs and sun umbrellas. There is an open-sided balai just behind the pool terrace with a table and six chairs.

NOTE: Lizzards (Gekkos) are a fact of life in Bali. The poorest dwellings and five-star hotels have them. They are harmless and eat countless insects. They have a loud cry and are impossible to housebreak. Many of us find them endearing. But be warned. In addition, there are countless roosters in any rural Indonesian setting, such as ours, that begin to crow very early in the morning.

NOTE: Wifi up where the house is situated can be spotty. There is one provider. It is by no means perfect. Those who need to count on internet access 24/7 had best avoid Nusa Penida altogether. That said, it is possible to get access to email and make travel arrangements online most of the time. If there were better service available, we would have it.

NOTE: There are shades on all sides of the upper bedrooms except for doors. The ravine complex bedroom has shades all around. Guests are free to choose where they sleep.

NOTE: There are farmers who work the fields between the upper complex and the ravine complex. That land is not part of the property and the farmers who work it are independent agents. In addition, the pool is clearly visible from the main road. We strongly encourage guests to always wear swim suits in and around the pool.

IMPORTANT WARNING: I have a much loved cat that lives in the house. ANYONE WITH CAT ALLERGIES OR PROBLEMS OF ANY SORT WITH CATS SHOULD NOT STAY HERE.

Guest access
Guests would have full access to my house and gardens. All told, including both complexes, the property is almost two acres. There are mango, avocado, papaya and orange trees and an abundance of flowers.

Other things to note
The house is about 25 minutes from the nearest beach. There is a small (very good) traditional restaurant known as a "warung" in Indonesia about a five-minute walk from the house. There is no shopping or night life in Tiagan. The property is a delightful location for those looking for a unique, beautiful, restful experience in a very friendly, traditional village. Those seeking a variety of restaurants and bars or shopping should look elsewhere.

Although there are a few ATMs down by the shore, they are often out of order or out of money. We urge visitors to arrive with sufficient cash to cover expenses on the island.

Location

Klumpu, Bali, Indonesia

Tiagan is a village of several hundred people. Guests are welcome to attend temple celebrations when they occur (often) as long as one is willing to wear traditional temple garb. Support staff are ready to help in regard to this or anything else that guests may wish to do.

Transportation is best by motorcycle. Again, support staff are willing to take guests wherever they may wish to go (there are additional charges for all transportation.) Mopeds can be rented quite reasonably by the day or week. Nusa Penida is NOT a good place to learn to drive such vehicles. Only those with some experience should attempt it.

Transportation by car is available, but the roads are winding and narrow, and car travel is necessarily slow.

Cooks are available to prepare meals for an extra charge. The kitchen is fully equipped (no microwave.) Support staff are happy to shop for staples and other food. Guests will only pay for purchases. Western specialty items, which includes bread, cheese and butter are so far only available on Bali. PLEASE NOTE: there are very basic stores in Tiagan that stock staples such as eggs, rice, sugar and salt. Most grocery shopping has to be done in Sampalan, the major town on the island, 25 minutes by motorbike from the house.

During your stay
I will not be available in person as the house is only rented when I am away.

Our staff are very accommodating and helpful. Their English is limited -- few people on the island are fluent -- but they will figure out what you want and need. Also, we are available by phone to troubleshoot and give advice.
