Gorgeous 1 bedroom Penthouse apartment in Historical neighborhood. Centrally located, fully equipped, quiet, spacious yet cozy, lots of light. Its 2 terraces, overlook open air market 'Carini' and is walking distance of major sites, Opera and rests.

The space

Red' (neighbour of Purple, also on Airbnb) is the Penthouse of an old, very clean, building overlooking the historic market of Porta Carini.

This 4th floor walk-up is quiet, full of light and has no neighbors. The flat consists of entrance, bathroom, kitchen/sitting room and bedroom/study. A large terrace is off the kitchen and a large panoramic terrace is on the roof - -dining, lounging & Weber barbecuing.

The RED has elegant furniture, fist class linens and crockery, top range cooking utensils with modern amenities (WIFI, Sat TV, multi system DVD, washing machine). And the closets are empty. There are none of the owner's personal effects.

Ours is a home that will make you feel at home. Just unpack and enjoy the freedom.

Located five minutes from Palazzo Massimo, the epicenter of Palermo, one does not need a car while staying here (but there is paying and free parking nearby).

If you need to chill in the sun or love markets and cooking (we can even arrange cooking lessons at home!) or if you want to dig in, visit and get to know Palermo, RED is the place as you can walk everywhere from here - -by the way both can also be done at the same time!

Guest access

In RED you will be able to hang out on 2 Stupendous Terraces With 360 Views Of the churches and palaces of Palermo. The Penthouse wraparound terrace has no one looking at you. Great for sunbathing, dining and relaxing...

Other things to note

COOKING SCHOOL:
Come and immerse yourself in traditional Sicilian cuisine with Chef Gabriele in the welcoming atmosphere of...your own apartment. Discover the flavors and secrets of Sicilian gastronomy.
The lessons begin with strolling through the market with Gabriele in the morning as you discuss what to eat and then choose it with Gabriele (you can also let him do this for you if you wish).

In the evening, as you are sipping your wine, Gabriele will come over and show you how to prepare the food and you either cook it with him or simply watch and learn as he does it in front of you. Once the food is ready...a tavola!

One way or the other you will go home with knowledge of the tastes and techniques of fine Sicilian cooking.

NOTE: for those who wish for a special, romantic, al fresco dinner cooked for them, and served on the Penthouse terrace Gabriele will guarantee to make it very special and unforgettable. Good for birthdays as well!

MONDELLO:
Aside from the splendid, clean, white sandy beach and the crystal blue water, Mondello offers windsurf, diving, tennis, open-air cinema, open air dancing, many good restaurants, pizzerias and snack bars.

There is a wonderful game park for small children. And the sea is very child-friendly, no tides, with life-guards. Important: one can swim late in the season in Sicily (well into November) as the temperatures range between 18°-25°C. We have had 25° at Christmas for the last two years!

TRAVEL:
Palermo Airport 'Falcone & Borsellino' connects Palermo via bus, train and taxi - -as well as car rentals.
Bus leaves on the 1/4hr (5am to 11pm) and takes 45’. Cost is € 6.20 (buy on bus). Piazza Politeama is your stop. From there it is a short walk to the flat. FYI: we, locals, all take the bus.
Train: Trinacria Express to Palermo Centrale, 45’, on the hour, 5am to 11pm, € 4.50, buy at newsstands and tobacco shops.
Car rentals: Hertz; Avis; Europcar; SIXT and others at airport.

Hello future guest, I have lived and worked around the world and know what it is like to look out the window and feel the need to want to get away to a beautiful, exotic (but not too), sensory filled, interesting, sunny, place. I learned to appreciate renting a flat rather than staying in a hotel - -no matter how upscale. However, I was often disappointed with the decor, the quality of the linens, the style.

When I came to Palermo I decided to create a 'home' as I would like to have it: elegant but not overstated, with a good kitchen, good quality crockery and linens and good art on the walls. I wished it to be quiet, full of light and airy. And I wanted to be able to eat outdoors, under the sun or the stars, with a view of the city before me. I hope to have achieved that, for you.

Now that you are coming, please treat it with care and attention. Enjoy the books, music and videos and please don't forget to put them back before you leave! The next guest can enjoy them as you did.

IMPORTANT RULES (that are often ignored by Guests, sadly, so we are making them clear here!)

Once we you are booked and we have your email, we can send you the DIRECTIONS DOCUMENTS, MAP and the GUEST BOOKLET which will give you the different options re arriving at the apartment and a good sense of what is around. Please RESPOND TO US so we know that you are in the 'system'.

Regardless of your choice of how to arrive from the airport (Taxi or Bus) , it is VERY important that you call Mr Mokbul (tel: +(PHONE NUMBER HIDDEN) you have collected your bags so he can be there to greet you. He needs some lead time as he is not exclusive to me.

If you are coming by car, train or bus you need to let us know two days in advance the hour you intend to arrive and also IT IS IMPERATIVE YOU CALL ONE HOUR prior to your arrival (no SMS/TEXT/(SENSITIVE CONTENTS HIDDEN) for Mokbul). We do not live there and not calling could cause delays in your entering for which we would not be responsible.

NOTE: we strongly recommend the taxi (€35 instead of €45) from the airport upon arrival. It makes your arrival hassle free and the driver, always the same as we have longstanding working relationship, will call ahead and warn of your impending arrival so the caretaker can be there for you. And it avoids having to walk to the flat after a long trip. We also suggest the BUS on the way out to the airport as it is easier and mellow. The voice is yours but the taxi is the way to go... :))

If you have a flight that arrives after 8pm (20:00) we would like you to take the taxi into town (we have a discounted service and can arrange it for you) instead of the bus. If you take the bus and then have to walk to the flat you will not arrive before 10pm (22:00). We do not live there and have to have someone stand by to let you in. We will always work with you as long as you communicate.

The arrival time is between 4:00 PM and 6:30 PM. There is a certain amount of leeway if we are informed beforehand. Departures need to be no later than 10:30 AM in order to allow time to prepare for the next Guest. We will be strict about departure time if another Guest is coming.

Thank you for your comprehension.

The apartment is amazing! Wonderful location, homely and stylish with everything you could possibly need. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay, the location was great, with the market on the doorstep, it really gives a great atmosphere. The locals were lovely and welcoming and the food from the market was brilliant. Everything we needed was within walking distance though the apartment with its outdoor space was all we needed on some days - to enjoy the local food and sit in the sun with our books. John and his friends were available for any questions and check in was very easy. I would absolutely recommend the apartment for anyone looking for a real Palermo experience. Thank you John!

Me and my mom stayed in the apartment for 6 days. It is perfectly located in the center of palermo. We could explore the city by foot. John also recommended a parking very close where we could leave our rental car. The apartment itself is so cosy and fully equiped with everything needed. The two rooftop terracces are perfect for a breakfast with a view over palermo an the landscape around. I can highly recommend the apartment, the communication with John and Rafaella worked very good and uncomplicated. Thanks again for making our stay in Palermo so great.

We had a wonderful stay at John's appartment. The terraces(!) are amazing! The view is stunning and just to sit there and have aperitivo (on the top terrace) or breakfast (on the 'normal' terrace) is already a highlight. The appartment's location is perfect. Right next to the building is the market where we found everything for breakfast. And as we spent a lot of time in the other parts of the city we were super glad that John's appartment is located in Capo, so we could see this part of the city as well. We very much recommend to stay here.

This apartment is in a good location within the daily market area. It is a sizable apartment, which is adequate and has some simple European charm. I would describe it as adequate, but not a place that is extremely comfortable. The owner provided good information regarding the area. If you don't mind 75 narrow and winding stairs with your luggage, you may find this a good spot for an extended stay.

Response from John:
Dear Melodee, I am sorry you did not find my apartment extremely comfortable. For the last eight years it has been praised and given extraordinary reviews. It has an exceptional rooftop view with 360° of Palermo and a second large Terrace right off the kitchen . If they were bird droppings you should have let the caretaker Mr. Mokbul know or called me ( that is one of the guestbook route is there with everyone's telephone number on it ) and let us know and we would have taking care of it immediately. We do not control where the birds defecate. There normally is a large umbrella on the terrace. Should it have not been there for some reason, maybe being cleaned, you should have written me an email as I respond within a few hours and we would've provided. Finally about the amount of steps not representing the apartment appropriately, it is written clearly in the Airbnb website that it is a third floor walk up. One is not necessarily required to count the steps. And, just for your information, my 85-year-old mother has done it regularly. In addition to that I also apologize for not being there. But I had a family emergency aa did my cohost. Nevertheless we are both available by phone and you could've rung us or sent text or written an email and we would've taken care of everything. I don't know what you expect but when you are in a foreign country the people who live in that country do not normally speak English. Unless you go to Canada or the Canaries which is maybe whete you might feel more comfortable if you're looking for people to speak English. My staff is excellent, attentive, ready for any matter, but it all comes down to communication. If you do not communicate with me, the owner, about something while you're in the flat or my cohost we cannot do anything about making a situation better. If you cannot communicate in Italian or sigh language then you should communicate with us and we can make translste for you. In conclusion I appreciate your feedback and thank you for all your comments because everything is constructive. However if I may permit myself, 95% of your feedback could've been corrected if you either picked up the phone or written me an email or send me an SMS or sent me a (SENSITIVE CONTENTS HIDDEN) or any form of communication that exist in the 21st-century. I promise you within one hour it would've taken care of. Except the steps. This is Sicily and buildings with elevators are in the modern part of town where everything is far uglier and far more expensive. . If you are in need of an elevator you should make that clear in your written demand to the owner. We could've provided you with another apartment that only have three steps. Again it is about communication. If you do not communicate you do not get the results you wish. Regardless of that I hope you enjoy your vacation elsewhere. Best regards, John
