Room with capacity for 2(+1) people with private bathroom and breakfast included, in a traditional farmhouse where organic wine is produced. Close to the charming town of Lagos and it's beautiful beaches.

The space
Monte da Casteleja is a traditional Algarvian farm which produces wine and other regional products from certified organic farming.
The Monte is a quiet and perfect place to rest, with a rural setting, away from the tourist hustle and yet just a few minutes from the charming and lively ancient city of Lagos and its magnificent coast, where each of its eight beaches has a unique character.

Our visitors stay in comfortable and cozy accommodation, built with the typical techniques of the region and noble materials, such as wood beams, stone walls, handmade cotto floors, and traditional ceilings rods. They naturally give the rooms a rustic and special atmosphere. We do not provide TVs because we do not want to distract the guests from the beautiful sounds of nature.
The life at the farm is guided by a high ecological awareness, and by respect for biodiversity and sustainable management of all available resources.

Guest access
The agricultural activities blend in with the rhythm of the seasons, being more dominant at harvest time (late August/ early September) when the grapes, that were maturing and developing the taste during the summer heat, are harvested in a great party mood. Guests are welcome to participate in this important event that only happens once a year, as well as in any others for which they show curiosity and interest. If you enjoy getting in touch with nature then come visit us and discover our everyday life. It pleases us to share it with you!

The farm offers its guests:
- Breakfast included
- Free Internet/ WIFI
- Free parking on site
- Handmade soap
- Stunning views
- Terrace with sun loungers
- Washing machine for personal laundry based on self-service (extra cost)
- Cot and high chair for children up to 2 years (extra cost)

- Wine tastings (extra cost but special prices for guests)
- Possibility of baby-sitting (depending on availability) for children from 2 years old (check prices at reception)

Other things to note

Location

Lagos, Faro, Portugal

Monte da Casteleja is located 3 km from the historic city of Lagos.
Lagos is a small town with 30,000 inhabitants and full with over 2000 years of history, mainly as an ancient maritime city and at one time centre of the European slave trade.
During the famous discoveries of the 15th and 16th centuries Lagos navigators left to conquor new lands. The great statue of D. Henrique, one of the most famous figures from the beginning of that era stands in one of the main squares and is just one sign of many of the great connections of the city to this historic moment.
Many slaves arrived here from Africa and were sold as forced labour within Portugal and to Brazil. The old slave market still exists in the old city center.
From 1576 until 1755, when the old town was destroyed by the historic earthquake and tsunami, Lagos was a high-profile capital of the Algarve. Many of the buildings are from the 17th century with some walls, including the governor's castle, still remaining from the 16th century.

Long before the Age of Discovery however, the Moors arrived in the 8th century from North Africa, leaving many traces of their existence in architecture, language, and culture. Feel the strength of this cultural heritage, particularly in agricultural practices, where the knowledge of irrigation systems and fruit drying still remains today.

In the 60s and 70s, there were several canning factories which gave work to many families and even produced for export. Nowadays the industry no longer exists in the region but the communities of local fishermen, who practice artisanal fishing, are still active and you can find lots of fresh fish in the daily markets and restaurants.
The various beaches are home to many sun and sand lovers, surf and other aquatic sports.

And at night the bars and clubs have plenty of entertainment to offer for those who still have the energy for a few drinks and dancing.
From here to Cape St. Vincent, the extreme southwest of the European continent, the part between the milder south coast of the Mediterranean Sea and the west coast of the Atlantic Ocean form 25 km of increasingly wild and windy beaches and a breathtaking landscape. The nearby village Sagres is part of the Natural Park of Southwest Alentejo and Costa Vicentina. Welcome to a magical place which is worth knowing !
