Built when Bovina was a booming dairy town, our grain mill gained a second life when we transformed it into the coolest living space ever. Sleep to the sound of a babbling brook, wake to stunning views of fields and hillsides. Wedding inquiries OK.

The space

From vaulting ceilings to original globe lamps, every detail of this converted grain mill invites you to relax, breathe deep, and revel in the pleasure of living. Renovated by the keen eye of my father (former furniture designer/builder), this is the space I grew up in -- where I now love to spend weekends escaping the city with friends. And how easy to do so here! With four bedrooms and two fold-out beds, a game room, and a massive kitchen and dining room, the space is practically begging you to bring friends and make yourselves a dream vacation in the Catskills.

Guest access

The mill is nestled on an acre of beautiful land, beyond which is a vast hay field. At the edge of the mown area, the hay begins and should be respected -- no trampling hay, please! On a hot day, dip your toes in the brook that runs by our back yard. There is often wild mint growing on the riverbanks as well.

Interaction with guests

The space is yours! I will always be available via phone or email, but will not intrude on your stay at all.

Other things to note

Having now hosted my first few guests, I realize there is another important detail to note: this is a country house. That means that, though the house is professionally cleaned before every guest arrives and after every guest leaves, it will never look like the Ritz. Flies sometimes come in through the French doors that open onto the deck. There are a couple barn cats that like to come to the back yard looking for snuggles and snacks. Our neighbor's rooster has been known to start crowing at dawn, none of the dish sets match in the kitchen, and half our window treatments are hand sewn. If everything you just read made you smile, this place may be for you. If not, there are ample housing options in Bovina, Andes, and Delhi, some of which may have a more controlled environment to meet your wishes. Another important note is that one bathroom has a shower, and the other has only a bathtub (and a toilet and sink, of course).

Sarah was a super easygoing host! This is a very relaxing, private, and fun stay! The house is creatively built out around a mill structure. It has a huge deck and grassy fields to relax --it also has a million games to keep you active. The area is beautiful, farm visits and cooking is a must-- But both eateries Sarah recommended -walking distance- were exceptional!

To say we were sad to leave Sarah's charming family home is an understatement. The whole place is cool and airy and is exactly what you would want from a country home. We stayed for a about 10 or 11 days with a few friends stopping by for the occasional visit and everyone completely fell in love. We screened movies on the projector (There's a redbox at the local Price Chopper, which we definitely put to use!) and a beautiful lawn that our dog exhausted himself on before spending time sunning himself on the deck. We made food in the enormous kitchen and read tons of books in the hammock. And of course there were many nights of s'mores-related stomach aches thanks to the fire pit in the yard. We slept listening to the babbling brook outside the window, enjoying the cool night time air. There's absolutely no need for an air conditioner at all! Despite the country living, the wifi worked perfectly downstairs, so we didn't have to miss any episodes of Game of Thrones. Best of all worlds! Sarah was patient with all my questions (including one involving some advice on how to rescue a tiny bird that somehow made its way into the fireplace/stove. It's summer, so it wasn't lit thank goodness!) and we're already trying to plan a trip back. Thanks again for everything!

My friends and I thoroughly enjoyed our time at the Grain Mill. The pictures don't do the house justice, it's quite spacious and very nice. The house was extraordinary and unique, had everything we needed and more! Sarah was a communicative and helpful host! We had wonderful breakfast sandwiches within walking distance and also ate out on the lovely deck. We played frisbee and sat out on the hammock and relaxed with lots of private land. We also had a fire pit and s'mores at night. The accommodations were very comfy, we would love to make it back again.

The view while enjoying cocktails on the huge deck was fabulous. It was so peaceful with the birds singing and the sound of the brook close by. We had family over to dinner and the teens enjoyed the game room. We played badminton on the large mowed lawn. Thank you!

It's the perfect NYC escape with a group of friends. It feels like the family home we don't have - but always wanted - just a few hours from NYC. We'll be back.

Sarah User ProfileSarah is a superhost.

I love traveling, reading, hiking in beautiful places, watching excellent (or goofy) movies, and meeting new people. I'm an avid yogi, runner, and occasional horse back rider. I grew up in Bovina Center, NY, and now split my time between there an NYC. When traveling, I tend to travel light - why burden my shoulders with carrying tons of extra clothes I won't wear? I love discovering new places, and especially getting to 'live like a local' wherever I go.

If you're coming to stay at the stunning Mill, you are in for a real treat. I've intentionally not equipped it with Internet, as my favorite thing to do when going to the Catskills is to "get off the grid." And what a place to do it in! With sprawling fields behind you, a charming hamlet town before you, Russell's General Store, and Brushland Eating House -- it's basically like a trip back in time. The space was originally a grain mill, back when Bovina was a booming dairy town. After generations of disuse, my father brought his ingenuity and incredible eye for design to the space, transforming it into the coolest Bohemian-barn-mansionette you've ever seen. It's a great space for groups of friends escaping the city and craving a 'real' kitchen for cooking amazing meals and gazing at clouds by day, stars by night.
