We have 3 rooms available to let in our farmhouse 5 minutes drive from the village of Montejícar, half way between Jaén and Granada. Take one of our highly-recommended photography courses, explore the countryside or chill by the pool.

The space

The farmhouse is completely off-grid. Water is pumped from our well and stored in a tank behind the house. The water is purified and can be drunk straight from the tap. Hot water and electricity is provided by solar panels. Wi-Fi / Internet is supplied by satellite [daytime restrictions apply, 00:00 - 06:00 unlimited access].

Guest access

There is a WC and shower on the ground floor for the exclusive use of guests. We have our own bedroom and bathroom upstairs. Inside you are welcome to make use of the living room and kitchen. Outside you can use the small "chill" pool, sunbeds etc.

Interaction with guests

This is our home and we will be present throughout your stay. Continental breakfast is included in the price. You can join us for dinner for an additional charge of €10 per person (please let us know in advance). In traditional Spanish style, we usually eat after 9:00 in the evening. If you prefer to eat out, there are two restaurants and a number of bars, all of which serve tapas, in Montejícar.

Other things to note

We have three very friendly dogs and a cat, so the house is not suitable for people with pet allergies. We are both light smokers.

House Rules

"Off Grid". We generate and store our own electricity via solar panels. Water is pumped from our own well before passing through a water purification system to ensure that it is clean, healthy and drinkable. Unlike an "on grid" property, we have a finite quantity of water and electricity available to us, so your co-operation in using these supplies as economically as possible would be much appreciated.
"Drainage". Waste water goes to our "pozo negro" (soakaway). Please help us to maintain the efficiency of this system by putting toilet paper etc. in the bin provided. The bin will be emptied daily.
"Smoking". Please do not smoke in the bedrooms or kitchen.

Both the hosts and the "house in the hill" are remarkable. We enjoyed our short overnight stay within the olive trees and the exceptional hospitality of Sue and Gary. We can only recommend to spend a couple of nights in that reclusive retreat.

It was lovely to meet Sue and Gary. They are both very kind and friendly hosts. The casa en la colina was beautiful and the surrounding areas very peaceful. I stayed with Gary and Sue for 2 nights and I took my little dog with me. It was a perfect place for me as their dogs kept my dog company. Muchas gracias.

We first contacted Sue in June for informations. She answered promptly and accurately. She gave us all the informations we needed to get to their place in Montejicar. The village and the house are about ten minutes from the highway, but the scenery while driving there is just beautiful, so well worth the time. And if you are lucky, you might cross the sheperd and his sheeps just like we did one morning. The house is not in the village, but really near, so you have the best of both worlds. Our hosts greeted us with a fresh drink on the terrace. We had the choice of the room as we were the only guests that night. Both rooms are cosy and share a bathroom that is next to the room we picked for our stay. Bed, pillows and sheets are very confortable and the whole house is impeccably clean. There is no a/c wich had me a bit concerned before we got there. But to my pleasure and surprise, the house stays remarkably cool even if it's really hot outside and it's even pleasantly fresh in the morning. The breakfast is served on the terrace or in the house. Fresh orange juice, yogourt, different types of breads, croissants, jams -a delicious bitter orange marmalade- and excellent coffee. We had diner one night at Consuelo, in the village, where Rafa offered a great service and suggested us a variety of tapas that we enjoyed very much. The following evening, we had a picnic on the terracce in that remarkable setting and this remains one of the best moments of our whole trip. Peace, beautiful surroundings, charming conversation with our hosts and Lola and Bertie, the house canine residents, fetching the balls and coming for a cuddle and a belly rub... To us, that was a perfect moment. Our hosts welcomed us warmly and made our stay as best they could with their answers, suggestions and genuine kindness. Our only regret is that we could not stay longer, but our visit was so delightful that we would return to that part of Spain specifically so we could go back to La casa en la colina. Thank you, Sue and Gary. We keep a special place for you in our fond memories. And please, give Bertie and little Lola a kiss and a belly rub.

After a hectic few days of driving we really enjoyed our stay here. Lovely location with great views over the Spanish rural countryside. Town was close by and our hosts made us feel very welcome. Really liked the veranda to sit out on and the house was clean, tidy and the gf was happy she got breakfast:) Would really recommend it to anyone looking for a more authentic Spanish experience with the town close by.
