Beach Lagoon Accommodation

The Hatchery is an old prawn farm set on the pristine and deserted Amatikulu lagoon just off the freeway. Tick it off your bucket list when exploring the KZN coast and game reserves.

The space

The Hatchery was a prawn breeding facility on a lagoon overlooking a deserted beach and nature reserve. It makes for a unique destination for any visitor to the North Coast. The facility has been "lightly" renovated - the end result is a unique blend of comfort and rustic cool. The hatchery is all about chilling out, letting loose, and reconnecting.

Chapel sleeps 2 on a unique pallet bed. It is situated slightly back from the frontline units(as far back as you can get at the hatchery). It does have a shared bathroom and the plumbing is original but we think you will enjoy... We hope you like what we've done and enjoy your experience here.

Interaction with guests

The friendly butlers are on site to help with local knowledge and assist wherever possible.

Other things to note

We are self catering; bringing your own supplies in is recommended. Low slung cars can scrape on the road in so leave the beemer at home for this one or take your time on the way in.

Activites

relax on the lagoon beaches or chill out in the gin tank or tonic pools overlooking the reserve, river, and sea
Hire a “prawnfeeder” to paddle across the lagoon

We spent two very relaxed days at the hatchery.being the only two guests we had the whole place for ourselves and staff was great!we heard that there are a lot of weddings so it can get loud.but not as we stayed there :) the room was bright, clean and beautifully decorated.there's also hot water, great to get a hot shower as it was quite cold the time we were there.the beach is kind of far away because you can't cross the lagoon so easy.we would there stay again!

Sometimes you arrive somewhere and it immediately feels like you never want to leave. For me, The Hatchery is such a place. The setting is indescribably beautiful (and I am from Cape Town, so that says something :), the beds are the best and the decor is stunning. Add to that friendly staff that is happy to cook, clean, babysit and butler for you like there is no tomorrow and you have yourself a five star glamping experience. Swim in the river, sip a glass of wine in one of the dip tank pools, play cards in one of the many nooks with a river view, or go for a long walk - you will not be bored for a moment.

Quirky accomodation perfect for chilling but not for everyone! Best for bakkie or 4x4 - my car's undercarriage got hit & i was scared i would get stuck & therefore didnt move from venue till end on my stay. Self catering should be stressed especially if u dont have suitable vehicle! I was not advised that my room The Chapel didnt have en-suite & had to use public facilities outside. Also next to washroom caused noises of gurling pipes....

Hi Darryl Thanks for the feedback. We have updated the description to make it entirely clear that low profile cars may battle and that we are self catering. We hope you enjoyed your stay and that the butlers made you very comfortable. Regards, Matthew

This place is stunning. beautiful views, lots of detail in the room design, fully equipped kitchen, super friendly staff. You've got options to swim in the river or cross it by float, leaving you at a deserted beach. Access also possible for 2 wheel drives (if it's dry). Absolutely recommended if you are looking for a lace close to nature

Staying at The Hatchery was a great experience. The converted prawn hatchery is by far the quirkiest place I have stayed at. We loved cooling down in the re-purposed breeding tanks that are now splash pools. The host were super friendly and helpful. We extended our stay and we will be back again!

This hotel is one of a kind, in a beautiful location. Quirky aesthetics, and very comfortable. I would describe it best as a Glamping experience.
