The space

Verbena is the perfect luxury, self-contained holiday cottage for couples wishing to get away from it all, relax and unwind while soaking in the superb views over a private lake. Found down an unmade lane, Verbena Cottage is a modern conversion—incorporating superb character—of a converted stone outbuilding that once belonged to a nearby stately home. With central heating, heat-recovery ventilation and a log burning stove, you'll be warm and cosy in this very private, quiet and beautifully-appointed luxury cottage. Please search Trip Advisor for reviews, which are all 5*.

Please note CHANGEOVER DAY IS FRIDAY!
The MINIMUM STAY between 1st May and October 1st and during holiday periods such as Christmas and Easter is 1 WEEK! Short breaks (minimum 3 nights) are available between October and April.

Verbena Cottage is all on one floor and therefore especially suitable for people with restricted movement. It starts with a well-equipped open plan spacious kitchen area with granite worktops, a fridge + freezing compartment, a gas hob, built in electric oven, a dish washer, washing machine and a microwave. Then there's a dining table seating four and a comfortable lounge area that also has seating for four and comes with a 42" Freeview TV, DVD player and Wi-fi.

Leading off, there's a spacious bedroom with super king-sized (6 foot) bed, dressing table and an east-facing window to catch the morning sun. Alongside is a modern en-suite bathroom which, in addition to a bath, has a luxury shower cubicle complete with seat. A cot can be provided on request.

Outside you have your own private patio set in a delightful garden area overlooking the lake in the valley below. Beyond your private garden you have a further 18 acres of gardens and grounds to explore. Why not row round the large water-lilly-fringed lake, relax in the summer house on the south shore or walk more than a mile of paths alongside the stream and through the woods? Wildlife abounds which you can observe from the strategically-placed hide and vantage points. Regular sights are barn owls, kingfishers and herds of deer—but you can also see grass snakes, badgers, foxes and no end of bird species, some quite rare. On clear winter nights you'll be astonished by the dark skies which provides a fantastic view of stars which cannot be seen in other parts of the UK due to light pollution.

A video is available on You Tube, just search "Verbena Cottage Devon".

Verbena Cottage is a great place to relax and unwind and is a superb central location to explore Dartmoor (15 mins) and the North Devon and North Cornwall coastlines (25 mins).

And don't forget, Verbena Cottage is quite close to our other barn conversions, The Garden House, Ostler's Cottage and Medley's Cottage, so why not come with other friends (total 10 people) so that you can have a barbecue by the lake or go for a row together?

NB: Note there are no 'hidden extras': the price is all-inclusive. However, the prices shown above are for winter out-of-season bookings and are higher during summer months.

Note that this cottage is for 2 people sharing a double bed ONLY ( + of course, a cot for a baby if you have one)! The line "Extra guests no charge" is deceptive, but as cottage owners we cannot change it.

Guest access

Verbena Cottage is a private, luxury, self-catering holiday let for a maximum of 2 people and a baby. Guests have their own private flower-filled garden. Beyond the cottage you may explore the whole 18 acres... even go for a relaxing row on the lake.

We had a great stay at Verbena Cottage. Anne was very welcoming and the welcome cake and flowers were a lovely touch. The kitchen is well-equipped so you can make your own meals. We recommend buying food on the way as the nearest supermarkets are in Okehampton. The superking bed is lovely and the shower has a steam function which is great when you come back after a day outdoors. Favourite places nearby were Lydford Gorge, Boscastle and Port Issac. Overall we would recommend staying at Verbena Cottage. Thanks Anne and John for a lovely stay.

A lovely cottage in a beautiful, peaceful location. Would highly recommend this cottage to anyone who wants to unwind and relax. The cottage was very clean and had everything we needed for a comfortable stay. The kitchen is well equipped to cook your own food and there some good pub restaurants a little drive away. We would recommend a trip to Lydford gorge and dragon archery for those a little more adventurous. Both are a short drive away and very enjoyable. Thank you John and Anne, we had a great time.

We had the most wonderful and peaceful time at Verbena Cottage. It was perfect - quiet, cosy, romantic ~ with plenty of wood for the fire, lovely comfy big bed, selection of DVDs, funky shower and the bath was big enough for two. Thank you very much John and Anne. We shall definitely be telling our friends and coming back for another visit.

This was a fantastic place to stay. The cottage has a great view and lots of privacy. The gardens are amazing and we were able to take the rowing boat out of the lake. The cottage is very well equipped and was very cosy in the evenings. We'd highly recommend staying here!

Over the last 15 years we've created our own very quiet and peaceful oasis in deepest, darkest Devon, which is a haven for wildlife and which we'd love to share with you. We have 4 holiday cottages in total to hire and for your additional reassurance, they have all received numerous reviews on Trip Advisor; do search them.

Our cottages have been a labour of love, converted to the highest 'eco' specifications. We generate our own electricity and use a ground source heat pump for the underfloor heating, as well as solar thermal panels for hot water. The walls are highly insulated so that you can be sure of being warm, even in winter. And to cap it off we've installed 'heat-recovery ventilation' to provide fresh air to every room and eliminate condensation.

Take a look on Trip Advisor to see how much people love staying here. We can't wait to welcome you!
