Dragonfly Flats is a serene getaway that's built by hand and perched in the mountains overlooking the sea. The cabin offers rare access to the publicly protected Davenport coastline and mountains, and is the perfect retreat for two.
The cozy structure features skylights and airy french doors to maximize access to nature, and is furnished with rustic ranch-style decor. The space includes a bedroom with a queen-sized bed, a bathroom, an outdoor/indoor kitchen with full amenities (fridge, stove, oven, microwave), and sunny porch with adirondack chairs and soaking tub, and an outdoor laundry area with washer/dryer.
The beach is a 3-mile drive away, along historic Swanton Road. Keep going another 5 minutes south on Highway One to explore the postcard stamp-sized town of Davenport, where you can pick up a freshly baked breakfast at our beloved Whale City Bakery. Linger a little longer to explore the artists studios and antique shops along the coastline. After 30 years of living here, we have lots of local recommendations for secret beaches, hiking and "U-Pick-Em" strawberry picking :) Stay for a weekend or stay for a few weeks!
The property is a 5-acre ranch that has three structures (including the cabin). The host lives at the main house on the property and full-time tenants live in the adjacent studio (both about 400 feet away from the cabin). The cabin was constructed with privacy in mind and is enclosed by trees on one side and a golden grassy hill on the other. You are welcome to explore the gardens as you wish and please pick fruit during your stay here.
Interaction with guests
I'm typically available to greet you, and if I'm not home, my property managers, Wendy & Chris are often here to welcome you and show you the cabin. Aside from that, we all live quite privately on the property, so you'll enjoy privacy during your stay. If you explore the other side of the property, you may see us gardening or tending to the bees or chickens that we sometimes raise here. Of course, if you have questions or need anything at all, you are welcome to swing by the main house!
Other things to note
Access: there is no wifi/internet at the cabin and very limited cell coverage. We do have internet at the main house on the property, so of course you are always welcome to swing by if you need it! Remember you will mostly be out of service during your stay here.
History: The cabin is named for the historic local nickname of this property -- Dragonfly Flats -- because of the dragonflies that congregate in this sunny area. In addition, you'll see lots of extraordinary wildlife (butterflies, bobcats, hummingbirds, owls, foxes) on the property.
We have a very laid-back approach to rules -- our main ask is to be respectful of the other residents and neighbors. In general, this is a very quiet environment that's all about tranquil relaxation in nature. So, a few guiding principles:
* Respect the quiet of nature, so please no loud music, and generally keep things quiet after 10pm.
* No smoking. Fire risk is extreme in this area.
* We do not allow pets. We have a dog (a chocolate lab named Billie) and cat (an orange kitty named Señor) that live on the property, so you may see them wandering around as well.
I am father to three grown daughters and have been inspired by their adventures around the world on Airbnb, so decided to try hosting myself.
Over the past 30 years, I've recreated my rural childhood for my family in the Santa Cruz Mountains -- what we have named "The Ranch." Last year, as I started to think about retirement, my family and I designed and hand-built a cabin on our property to start hosting Airbnb guests for fun.
My hosting style is all about comfort and privacy. I have lots of practice with many years of my daughters and their husbands coming to visit :) I like to be available to greet guests and make sure you're comfortable in the cabin, and after that, you'll enjoy total privacy at the cabin. I live in the main house with my dog, Billie, a few hundred feet away, so you if you ever need anything (wifi, fresh farm eggs from the chickens, etc), you're welcome to swing by.
