Gorgeous setting on the river, surrounded by natural area, but minutes from downtown or Michigan State University. There are few places like this anywhere in the vicinity. In summer, you cannot see another house. Sleeps 15 or even a couple more, counting the bunk room, the hideabed room, and a couple extra mattresses (13 in bedrooms). It is a great value for larger groups that want to stay in the same place together.

The space

This house is on the wide part of the Grand River in Lansing where MSU's rowing teams practice. The house is quite close to the water looking W/NW off the back deck. Its 1.6 acres is surrounded on all sides by undeveloped public natural area with hiking/mountain biking trails. One cannot see another house in summer and in winter they still seem pretty far away. Lots of wildlife to see. We have seen just about everything: Blue Herons, Great Egrets, Ducks, Geese, Swans, Groundhogs, Coyotes, Foxes, Deer, Hawks, Eagles, Bass, Carp, Snapping Turtles, and Muskrats. All kinds of baby geese around in late Spring.

Guest access

You will have access to all parts of the build except the caretakers/owner's suite in back. Garage parking available.

Other things to note

A basic rental agreement will be required (per our insurance provider). It asks basic things like taking care of the place and more importantly asks you to waive liability for the "risky" amenities of our property: hot tub, river access, exercise equipment, fire pit, boats, etc.

Shawn was awesome. he was responsive and flexible on a short notice. We needed a place for a bunch of us to stay while attending a funeral in town. Shawn's location was perfect. The Jacuzzi was a great touch, it allowed a place for us to joke around and decompress. I wish I had more time in the area to stay at this place to fully enjoy everything it has to offer. If you can stay here for several days I'd recommend it. If you need a place in the area this is it. Also closer to everything we needed to go to than what I thought (I had never been to the area prior) Shawn's place is almost like a secret lake house that is really close to down town.

We had 10 people for a long weekend to celebrate a birthday and had a nice peaceful weekend on the river. We had bonfires, canoed, hiked and took in a MSU game. Overall a great place, we loved how spacious it was.

We were visiting from California and rented Shawn's house in order to have a place where our Lansing relatives could come and hang out with us. It worked out great: plenty of room to sit and move about, good kitchen amenities for cooking and serving food and the view of the river from the house is spectacular! Our relatives have lived in or around Lansing most of their lives and were very surprised at the privacy and beauty of the house location. Meijer's on Saginaw Hwy is a great all-purpose grocery store and we loved Horrock's, a large farm market, for a huge selection of fresh produce, cheeses, flowers, wine, meats, popcorn, etc. etc. Some of the things we enjoyed doing with the family during our stay: walking the MSU campus, going to Frankenmuth to shop for Christmas ornaments at Bronner's and chicken dinners at Zhender's, shopping at the Antique Market of Williamston. As previous reviews have mentioned, the wildlife is fascinating, and we feel lucky to have seen 4 lovely white swans and a pair of Sandhill cranes everyday as well as a prehistoric-looking turtle. In short, many fond memories were made on this vacation thanks in most part to Shawn's house.

We were extremely happy with our choice of this spacious home with a picture perfect view of the Grand River. It was conveniently located for our activities in the greater Lansing area including Michigan State University.
