Wifi internet and cell phones/ cell data work throughout the house and pool area.

Feel free to walk around the property and enjoy the abundance. The property is powered by geothermal grid and our solar energy system. We offer rainforest trail where you can experience the unique Ohia and Fern ecosystem up close as well as panoramic view of the ocean.

Owners Jacklynn and Elijah run Chilkat Environmental in Haines, Alaska. We spend the summers in Alaska and the winters at our delightful home in Hawaii. We are available, as is our housekeeper, Jenny who lives next door. We value your privacy and don’t require interaction for check in or checkout unless you want to say hi or have questions.

Other things to note

The 20 acre retreat is within the Puna Forest Reserve and our grounds are surrounded by rainforest that is part of the retreat. Hawaiian Natives own the non-private property within the reserve to protect the Native Ohia forest that is sacred to them. The reserve was acquired by the Trust for Public Lands and transferred to the Office of Hawaiian Affairs. The reserve is endangered species habitat for the Endangered Hawaiian Owl, Hawk, and Bat. While these species are otherwise very rare they are often observed here. Researchers continue to identify new species in this unique ecosystem and there is ongoing collaboration to control invasives. Extensive work is underway on the property to control invasive species and encourage native species.

The Ohia Forest has giant ferns, diverse orchids, epiphytic plants, strawberry guava, moss, passion fruit, geckos, praying mantis and songbirds. The rainforest is very dense and so we ask guests to remain on the grounds for their safety unless we discuss the specific hazards. The retreat property surrounding the grounds feature many skylights into lava tubes as well as lava trees and caves. The Puna Rainforest is invigorating to see, taste, hear and feel. the property has a 1.2 mile private trail through the rainforest for guests.

Upon check in we soon found out that the owners lived on property. They made it a point to introduce themselves which I appreciated . However we soon realized that the owner would be by everyday of our visit, to the extent that their family would even use the pool that was located at our rental when our family/ children were in it. When we arrive the house was in good condition. The day before check out we were asked to clean the home as the owner had expressed that she no longer had a cleaner for this home. We were never offered a discount on the cleaning fee that we had already paid ($135) . Being on vacation I found this completly unacceptable however I felt bad and spent most of my last day cleaning the 4 bedroom 2 bathroom home. The home is nice, the land that the home sits on is beautiful, the kitchen is well stocked and comes with everything you could possibly need. The wifi is crap and you will get no cell signal in this area. That being said, the fact that you are given zero privacy will prevent our family from returning.

If you truly want to experience the Big Island, this is the place to stay. Jacklynn provided us with everything we needed. Snorkeling gear, body boards, cooking utensils, tons of towels, the list can go on. Beds were very comfortable and night time was fresh. The little black book was a great source to look at for nearby recommendations. So much to do and so much to see. Although there were no ripe bananas we did get to try much of the other fruits on the property. Beaches are close by and live lava flowing into the ocean is very close as well. After speaking with many locals we were able to hike to a gorgeous water fall that was about a 45 min drive from our stay. Hilo is also very close. We also went to the local flea market on Sunday and tried a bunch of different foods as well. I could keep on going about this place but I'd end up writing a book lol. Once again thank you Jacklynn for blessing us with such an amazing stay.

A beautiful house in the middle of mother nature. Self Check-in and out was very, very easy. It's a wonderful house, more than spacious and well equipped. Jacklynn is the perfect host. We loved the pool and cat Oscar! In the night you can watch millions of stars in the sky and listen to the animal-djungle-music. We had a guided night walk to the Volcano NP lava fields, which was awesome! We absolutely recommend Jacklynn and her superb house. Mahalo!
