Response from Neil:
WARNING! We absolutely DO NOT RECOMMEND RAFAEL as a guest under any terms, circumstances, conditions or occasions.
Over the past twelve years we have hosted hundreds, if not thousands of satisfied guests from all corners of the globe and have NEVER had a guest like RAFAEL. In fact, RAFAEL IS SO BAD, this is the first time that we have ever had to write a negative review about a guest dating back to 2005. YOU ARE FOREWARNED!
RAFAEL’s “Modus Operandi” is to reserve AirBnB listings and deliberately misinform (under-inform) the host about the number of guests in the group. For RAFAEL’s stay, he originally informed us there would be only three (3) guests, when really there were five (5). When confronted, RAFAEL delayed, obfuscated, deflected and tried to “buy time”, obviously unwilling to resolve his contractual obligations for the additional two (2) guests.
After a full two days of waiting for a resolution from RAFAEL, AirBnB RECOMMENDED that we ask RAFAEL either to pay the balance due immediately, or check out immediately since he was in direct violation of the house rules.
Only after receiving this direct pressure, did RAFAEL react. Yet, RAFAEL was not apologetic nor empathetic. Instead, he was indignant and righteous explaining that he “NORMALLY resolves these issues with hosts at the end of his stay”, revealing that this is his premeditated and calculated standard practice. Disturbingly, RAFAEL then explained that he had been too drunk since the day of his arrival to address and resolve the situation.
Concerned for the well being of the apartment, knowing that this guest could not be trusted and now shockingly aware that RAFAEL was most likely drunk, we opted to try to defuse this potentially disastrous situation quickly by offering a FORTY PERCENT DISCOUNT FOR THE ADDITIONAL TWO GUESTS. RAFAEL, having received an undeservedly generous offer, immediately accepted this great deal. We were relieved. We had dodged a bullet.
Our relief was short lived. On check-out day, RAFAEL refused to leave at 12 noon, the stipulated check out time. He argued that HE ALWAYS GETS TO CHECK OUT LATE WHEN HE USES AIRBNB, and “besides”, his “flight was at 17:00” as if it were some sort of guaranteed entitlement.
Our objective was to peacefully get him out the door, so we diplomatically offered a solution to let RAFAEL stay if he agreed to kindly organize and place their luggage to the side so the clean up crew could at least begin fulfilling their responsibilities and obligations.
In response, RAFAEL inexplicably lost his composure in an infantile rage, complaining that the generous forty percent discount was “abusive”, and “threatening” that he would vacate the premises within the hour. Not surprisingly, we welcomed this “threat” with open arms and to our pleasant surprise RAFAEL FINALLY left the apartment shortly thereafter.
We now hope that another twelve (12) years will go by before we ever have to experience an individual as deceptive, conniving, selfish and immature as RAFAEL.
