The space

Okanagan Room offers Queen beds, dresser, closet, bed side table and a shelving unit. Last Christmas a major renovation was done creating two en-suite bathrooms so each bedroom has a private three piece bathroom. No more sharing!! The living room is cozy, has a gas fireplace and you can plug in your Ipod for music selections of your choice. Full access to a fully stocked kitchen and that includes coffee and tea for guests as well as herbs and spices in abundance if you want to cook a home cooked meal. I have a second room, Kalamalka Room. Check the calendar and see if they are both available and bring a friend! https://www.airbnb.ca/rooms/6591320

Guest access

The yard has parking in the rear, off street private parking. There is a barbecue for your use. The rest of the yard is under construction with the lower level development. Most guests would rather be at the beach or hiking the trails in the heat of summer so when they are home, the inside cool environment is appreciated. There will be decks created as the project moves forward. Enjoy the Okanagan!!

Interaction with guests

This house offers an upper floor where I reside. You get the main floor of the house, semi private, only one other guest. It's pretty quiet! My work takes me on journeys often so there are times I am home, and times I am away. I am inspired by amazing people and fantastic conversations and just as happy to be in my own space doing what matters to me.

Other things to note

Students are offered a higher discount. In order to achieve this with the system, I will send you a special offer. Please let me know you are a student and I will increase your weekly or monthly discount by an additional 5%.

I have great plans for upgrades to the house and they are underway. Expansion to the size of each of the two private rooms in the shared space and additional private suites are being created on the lower level. The first suite is being completed and is booked with a medical student for the fall. Availability is open from Dec 16 onward. The work has been outside and under the house over the summer. It is wrapping up and the finishing put in place. The landscaping will not be able to be taken to the next level until spring so for now it remains unfinished. Pictures will be getting posted as each stage completes. The work is being done in the unfinished areas, away from guests. When the renovations begin in each of the rooms, they will be blocked as unavailable for that period of time.

Trudy is a lovely host; I will return. Her home is welcoming, clean, quiet and inviting. Trudy contacted me before our check in day inquiring if I was still okay with the renovations and if I had any questions. The outside renovations did not impact our trip. During the visit she was talkative and answered questions. Nice couple of days at Trudy's the bed was comfortable, the shower clean, the water hot and great location. oh, a c tab of chocolate at our bedside :-)

STAY AWAY! 3 nights to attend the Seniors Games in Vernon. When we booked, the pictured showed a nice finished house with a nice front entrance, large parking area, fence, etc. First, the house is right on the major loud highway through Vernon so the only access is off a dark gravel back alley in what I consider a sketchy neighbourhood. The house is semi-torn apart on jacks above a large deep gravel pit to add a lower floor. It is cracked everywhere inside and out and our room had an open vent to the open construction site and with plenty of finishing needing to be done. There is no heat or gas fireplace and mornings were cold. With the BC Games in town we had no other room option and tried to make the best of it, but the final straw was being asked to move our cars at 6:30 am for the cement truck and pumper truck to begin work beneath our room! We had to squeeze our way around and between these super loud trucks, so dangerous! The construction for 3 days was awful, equipment banging and the owner and contractor fighting and yelling -- it was insane and potentially dangerous. We could not believe the owner had had scheduled all of this during our visit without updating us. We were also not told about another person living there with Trudy and sharing the common areas of the house. You can hear every step above the room, and this old house creaks a lot. Things went from bad to worse including having to report them to the authorities. Sadly the lack of honesty as ruined our visit to Vernon. We are not people looking for any kind of high end place for a bargain as was insinuated, this was a simple place that would have been perfect for our short stay had it been as advertised, but take my advice and stay away. There are a lot of construction plans for this place yet to come.

Response from Trudy:
While it’s not hard to see this guest was very unhappy, what you can’t see from her comments is the whole picture. I am truly grateful for this response feature right now. (Thank you Airbnb) The concrete trucks arrival early the last morning was an inconvenience for sure. I had talked with the guests the night before regarding the concrete trucks time of arrival the next morning and they willingly agreed to move their cars. There was nothing said to me during the 3 night stay to indicate a problem or to make me aware of their unhappiness. I happily took care of every request Judy had over the time she was here, different bedding, locking up her bikes in a secure place, and helping her with internet issues and using the coffee maker to name a few. I also reimbursed her fees for the last night given the arrival of the concrete truck the morning of their departure. Some of the details that were omitted will help to see the whole picture. One example is her comments on the heat. While it is true there was no heat on, it was Summer in the Okanagan and the furnace had not been on all summer. Judy even asked for different bedding because it was too hot at night and she preferred it cool. Sometimes it is hard to please people when they have already made up their minds about something. I believe this happened when Judy first pulled up to the house. The words she shared with me on the last morning as she reflected on her arrival, were that she viewed my home as a demolition. ouch! The porch is old and I took the chimney down this summer but otherwise, a pretty normal house with a renovation on the go. it has been my home for 20 plus years and it is not a demolition or hanging over a gravel pit. I changed the elevation of the yard to create patio entrances this summer. Summer is time to do work on the outside of the house and in the yard and as with all renovations, there is the taking down and then the making better. All the tearing down is complete and the making better stage is underway. The summer heat has passed and so the landscaping will begin with the change in season. I have built a berm this summer that will now be planted. This berm is behind a bamboo hedge that was planted in the spring as a sound barrier. It has grown easily a foot this summer. The front walkway, stairs and terraced garden are the next steps in the mission of creating a private sound barrier. The work is happening on the lower level of the house and I did not post any pictures of the lower level as it has never been guest space. Yes, there are cracks in the walls. Unfortunately this 1940’s house still has plaster walls on the main floor so there are cracks to fill. Many of those cracks have been here for years because of the house sitting on a clay hill. The rooms will be scheduled for renovations next year when they will be unavailable for a short time as I expand them and replace the plaster. All the pictures are accurate. The inside of the house is exactly the same as you see in the pictures. As the landscaping gets done, I will update pictures of the outside. There will also be new pictures of the new private suite I am building as soon as it is complete. As for the neighbourhood, it is full of families and retired people. It is across from the hospital and has many hospital workers, nurses, doctors, lab techs etc. living near by or parking in the neighbourhood to go to work. There is nothing sketchy about it. I have successfully worked around hospital workers schedules over the summer. There have been multiple guests who have had great stays, without issue. This particular experience was both been extreme and a first. If you are interested in other perspectives, there are 56 reviews for Ok room and 86 reviews for Kal room that speak to what it is like at my home. It is both my joy and my intention to provide a quiet, private space that is as close to home as it can be for people while they are away from home. The improvements I made over the summer are with that in mind. The other couple that stayed for the Senior Games were supportive, kind, and the man, a gentleman. His interest and vision of the project were positive and supportive. He shared stories of his summer Reno project with his son and encouraged me, sharing that he loved what I was doing. Over the three days I provided security in a locked Storage bin for their bikes valued at ‘thousands of dollars’ and accommodated their early morning schedule of 8 am to get the bikes out for their day, which I was happy to do. They were here to compete in a Mountain Bike Race at Ellison Park and had a practise ride planned the first day and the competition was the second. Day three was relay and the metal ceremonies. The good news is my guests all won gold metals. These folks were early rises, fit and out competing in the games. The whole house was up in movement between 6 and 8 every morning and out all day with their events while work got done on the house. We did not work in the evenings. On the last morning, she was up and happily went about moving her car when the pump truck arrived early. Judy asked for late checkout the night before. I agreed knowing it would be ideal for them to keep their coolers of food in the fridge until after the ceremonies and would make it easy for them in the morning to get out the door to their event. They were up and out the door as they had been for the last 2 mornings. The difference was there was also 2 trucks out there and workers getting ready to do a job. Neither I nor my guest spend any time in the shared Kitchen and Living room while they were home. I live upstairs and turn the main floor over to guests as a practise. I use the kitchen when guests are out as a rule and my passage to the door from my stairs is through the kitchen so I and my guest do get a chance to say hello through out the day when folks are home. The authorities were called and I now have a ‘Safe Site Inspection Report’ I can provide for those who ask. The threats her husband made when he came to check out at 2 in the afternoon were followed through on. I felt reimbursing the last day was the right thing to do the minute the concrete pump truck arrived an hour early. I was unaware they would come to set up one hour before the agreed start time. I would not have agreed to that time of day knowingly. That morning I offered a credit for that last night to both guests. I followed through on that promise and reimbursed both guests their last night as a gesture of my apology for their inconvenience that morning. I did decline Judy’s request of a full reimbursement.

Trudy is a great host; communicative and helpful without being overbearing. The bed was comfy and it was great to have a private bath. Her place is currently under construction so there were some signs of that, but nothing serious to affect our experience. The only downfalls were the road noise at night and a bit of a tight fit in the shower. Great value, especially as we were needing a budget option for a single night stopover! Thanks for everything, Trudy!

Known in her younger years as the best hay bale stacker in the lower mainland, Trudy is now gaining favourable accolades in offering her home as a haven for travellers, business people, the in-laws, family members of patients, and students from across the street at the hospital.

With a business in leadership coaching, a background in customer service, and having raised 3 children, as well as hosting a gaggle of international students throughout the years; it was the natural step forward when her 24yr old daughter suggested that she turn the family home into a guest house.

Having an avid interest in international travel herself and the love of the outdoors, Trudy is a most gracious hostess, in not only sharing her home, but in offering advice on all to see and do in the greater area of the Okanagan. She loves to do what she can to make people feel welcome and comfortable.
