We really enjoyed our stay at this casa. Bernhard was in Germany at the time, but his wife and family were there. His wife was very sweet and helpfull. She also spoke German wich was a great plus. The casa itself was clean. The airconditioning worked well and there was a fridge in the room. It had a balcony aswell. We had no bugs in our room at all! And the beach is really only 12 minutes away. And it is really beautifull!! Thank you for your hospitality.

The family that welcomed us were gems! Breakfast for 5 CUCs per person included a plate of fruit, omelette w/ cheese & ham, honey & toast, and juice - was delicious! Do note that this place is a 15-20 min walk into the "main" Varadero area. As others have mentioned, communication was instantaneous prior to booking. However, we had several questions 1.5 days prior to arriving to Cuba = 5 days prior to arriving in Varadero (including check-in time, what to do should our bus arrive late & will anyone be home, etc. given other reviews); however, now back in the US still have not received any communication...not sure if it's an internet access issue. While the home and family are lovely, we highly recommend communicating check-in procedures/any other questions EARLY in the planning process to make sure they get answered.

So,I have the same situation like the guy in November. My husband and me came from Havana to Varadero. I try to call host, but his numbers that he gave us, wasnt Cuban (Like they told me on station, and they laughing at that..because they now that he tricked us ). Then we went on this adress and nobody was there. Close house. So, taxi driver was nervous, me and my husband also. Then the taxi driver helped us and found new Casa in Varadero for us. I adviced Bernard that he MUST he at home, all day,all night. He expect guests, he MUST be proffesional. People late, yeah.. aeroplanes late, bus can late..we fantazija affected on that. There is no connection just for saying "I will be late" this is Cuba. You MUST be at your house!

Response from Bernhard:
Incomprehensible, that Irena claims, that there was nobody for check-in: the whole family was in the garden, talking and laughing with our guests for New Years Eve... She didn't call me, neitter on my german phone nor my cuban numbers. I think that they got tricked by the taxista. Very unfair to treat us like that, but we always look at the bright side of life: with most of our guests we have a good time together.

Before my Cuba trip, Bernhard was fantastic. Fast communication, friendly, etc. I confirmed our stay before I left the US, and while we were in Cuba. However, after confirming several times, when we actually showed up at the casa, there was nobody home. We tried calling the two phone #s we had, and one wasn't a working number, and the second went unanswered. It was dark, the house had no lights on, and we had no way of getting in touch with anyone . Our taxi driver tried to help, but after 10-15 minutes, we had to find a place to stay. We ended up at an expensive hotel, and Bernhard has still not refunded our money. The worst casa particulare experience we had in Cuba, and it was the only one "confirmed" by a big company. Thanks, airbnb!

Response from Bernhard:
Problem was that Colin arrive 1 and a half hour to late and didn't wait just a moment. My family just had to go to a Office to subscribe. We payed back the money although he nevertheless contacted us with our cuban phone numbers. Bad experience...

This a lovely run family home, with clean facilities and a great breakfast option.

The room was nice and clean, appeared as advertised. Never heard from Bernhard, but the Cuban hosts were kind. Location is in Santa Marta, just outside of Varadero, so it was great for getting a real taste of local Cuban community, though not close to any tourist/hospitality facilities. Depends on what you're looking for; it worked well for us. If you don't speak Spanish this place could be difficult. There were no English or French speaking hosts during our stay. A word of caution: be careful about relying on the extra services offered. We arranged an airport pickup, and they forgot to come. We had to take an (expensive) cab. Similarly, we arranged a breakfast on our final morning, and when the time came no one was awake to make it. We had to leave without eating to catch our bus. On the other hand, we rented bicycles and that was great. The place is nicely furnished, with a safe, running water & toilet, etc. There is very cheap food on the high street nearby.

Bernhard was great before our visit, making sure we had a pick up from the bus station organised, which was very helpful as there is currently no readily available Internet in Varadero. The house is clean and the room was spacious and comfortable. The aircon was a great feature. The house is approximately 29 minutes walk to the beach and there are some food outlets nearby. Overall a great stay in Varadero, I would recommend this listing to anyone.
