A house in a hamlet at the foot of the Mont Ventoux surrounded by cherry orchards and vineyards. Owned by artist Julian Merrow Smith and his cellist wife, Ruth, it is decorated in Provençal style with your host's paintings on the walls. The lovely village of Bedoin with it's pool is only 5 minutes drive away.

The space

La Maison des Peintres is a typical village house at the foot of the Géant de Provence, the Mont Ventoux. Tucked into the higgledy piggledy walls of a Provençal hamlet, it is warm and light-filled, painted in rich Provençal colours. The ground floor is divided into three areas - kitchen, dining and living. This leads onto a sunny terrace with a quality gas barbecue overlooking one of the most beautiful views in the area with a patchwork of cherry orchards, vines and poplars. This view is particularly dramatic in the autumn. The kitchen is well stocked with gas rings for stove-top cookery and a 28 litre capacity combi oven/microwave. It is important for us that you have good coffee making facilities and proper glasses for drinking the fine wine of the region as you watch the sun go down. Each bedroom is large with top quality mattresses, pillows, duvets and linens. Towels are fluffy. Everywhere there hang paintings by your host and other painters who have visited. For winter guests, there is an original Godin stove and an open fireplace which keep the place toasty. One of the bedrooms also has a working fireplace. All rooms have electric heaters. There is wifi available throughout and an ipod/phone sound dock in each bedroom.

Ruth's house is set in a small provencal village at the base of the Ventoux mountain. It has beautiful views across vineyards and fruit orchards. We were lucky enough to stay on a weekend when there was an antique market throughout the village and right outside our front door. We also managed to get to the local market on the following Monday in the main town two kilometres away. The house is as described and pictured on the Airbnb website and was even better than I had expected. It is extremely spacious and feels very welcoming. The kitchen has everything you need to be able to cook all the great local food available at the market. As the village is slightly off the beaten track it is peaceful and quiet and the patio provides plenty of space to relax. There are also great walks around the mountain and many vineyards to explore. Communicating with Ruth was extremely easy and the key handover straightforward. Ruth made us instantly feel at home as she explained everything in the house. I would highly recommend Ruth's house.

The house, the location, and the host couldn't have been better. We stayed for two nights to cycle up Ventoux, and Ruth was incredibly accomodating when we arrived later than expected due to mechanical problems. The house had secure bike storage, but more importantly, it was a great escape from the more touristy Bedoin - situated in an idyllic Provence street in a hillside hamlet. A great escape! All the amenities in the house were to a really high standard - a luxury stay in remote Provence. Thanks Ruth!

Amazing house in a stunningly beautiful place. The house is clean, spacious, and charming, and the terrace overlooking vineyards and mountains is absolutely breathtaking. My husband painted it, actually. One of the owners (Julian) is a renowned painter and instructor. His wife Ruth is a world-class cellist and about the nicest person ever. She was available to answer our many questions and we were lucky enough to see her 6-year-old rockstar Louie bike up a storm. The place was magical. The people were gracious. Five stars and then some.

We had such a wonderful time at Ruth's home. The house is well equipped and tastefully done up. In fact the picture don't do justice. The house is much more beautiful than the picture. Excellent host. Good location. We just loved our stay. We will definitely go back again. Ruth has also kept her suggestion book and that was so helpful. The host thinks about small things and its reflected everywhere in the house. Our kids loved it too.

What an amazing house in a perfect location at the foot of Ventoux. Our hosts were friendly and generous, ensuring that we happy throughout the stay. The bar and pizzeria at the bottom of the road was lovely, and the views from every window in the house were stunning. We would 100% recommend the Artist's house.

We are a British painter and cellist who live with our 4 year old son, Louis, adopted from Mali in 2011, and two cats in part of a tumbledown hamlet at the foot of the Mont Ventoux. I play regularly in Paris and in the UK and Julian has become renowned for his painting a day project ‘Postcard from Provence’. I am also the author of a memoir ‘Cherries from Chauvet’s Orchard’ which was shortlisted for the Guardian women’s memoir competition in 2014. We run painting workshops from a restored priory and from our house and I teach the cello, specializing in helping cellists overcome tension problems. We have traveled extensively, for pleasure and for work and stayed in the most basic tent to the most extravagant hotels. We are passionate about design and beauty and we aim for simple quality.

We know the area - from it’s little scented paths that to its world class wine - very well as we have lived here and Julian has painted here for fifteen years, so we will happily give you tips on what to see. We look forward to welcoming you. We are also interested in doing exchanges.
