About this listing
This house was built in the 1600s in the heart of Ano Syros' historic castle settlement. Built that way to protect inhabitants from pirate attacks, the house spreads of two and a half narrow floors. The view unique, the Aegean sea and three islands.
The house is tied to the history and culture of this island. The view from the terrace is breathtaking, the entire island of Syros, the Aegean sea and three surrounding islands are all part of the panoramic vista. The house was renovated in 2008, when it turned from a medieval ruin to a beautiful little house, while remaining true to its identity. Right across is the historic tavern of Lilis, where one of Greece's most famous "rebetes" musicians, Markos Vamvakaris, wrote and preformed his songs. In fact the very old owners of Lilis taverna are still alive, and glad to give anyone who asks, an oral account of the history of Ano Syros.
While the view is the house's most remarkable feature, there are other equally interesting elements. On the ground floor, there is a cave (!!!) and the floors are decorated by traditional Aegean artwork. All beds are handmade, custom-made for this house, which comes to life in lilac, lime, rosemary and sea breeze blue colours. There is a tiny but adorable half-floor with an equally small but fully functioning kitchenette.
This house is truly a unique space, with an architectural perspective that doesn't exist any more and wouldn't work in any other place on earth.
All guests have full access to the entire house.
Interaction with guests
A designated person will meet with guests upon arrival, give them keys to the property, offer them a tour and can cater to emergencies.
No smoking inside the house, but feel free to lean back on the beautiful hammock on the terrace and smoke, or even better join the locals who smoke and chat outside, under a fig tree.
House broken pets welcome. If the pets cause any damages, guests are 100% responsible to pay for the damages.
Parents should be watchful with young kids, as the artist-designed staircase has no railings.
The house is not a hotel. Treat it with respect. Leave it clean and presentable.
