The space

The Space

What makes our space unique is the giant sky and green valley located between austere mountains and sage brush fields. Our home site views right down the valley to the sunset that is always a great show.

We are offering an introductory rate this summer of $85 per night.

We can comfortably sleep 2 in the studio apartment on a queen size bed at this time. The apartment is upstairs and has fantastic views from a spacious elevated deck of Mt. McCaleb and the Lost River Range. We cannot accept children at this time because the main house is still under construction, although almost finished. In the future we will welcome children. Dogs must be kenneled and or clean when entering the studio.

If you visit during chilly weather the room has a wood stove to keep you toasty warm. Backup electric is also available.

Guest access

The Studio offers a minimal kitchen with sink, toaster oven and small fridge, coffee pot, assortment of teas and basic condiments. We have another fridge in the garage for 6 packs, etc. It offers a shower bathroom, high cedar ceilings, and a 360 degree view. We generally serve a full breakfast brought to the studio apartment at 8am or when you want. Other serving times can be specially arranged for travelers and hunters...people on the go. Access to the organic garden in the summer. Dinner can be reserved with a general 24 hours notice, but sometimes I can pull it together with less notice. Don't be afraid to ask... and I do love to cook! Prices range from 10 to 20 dollars, depending on menu and should be paid in cash or check. Please note that it is difficult to dine out on Sundays in Mackay, fast food being the only option.

Please note that Mackay is at 6,000 foot elevation. Summer evenings and nights can be chilly, sometimes going down to 45 degrees so be prepared with warm clothing.

For those coming for the ATV rally we are approximately one and a half miles from the fair grounds where the rally has its focus and its accessible by ATV on side roads from the B&B.

Interaction with guests

We enjoy interacting with guests but realize that some guests like to have privacy. We are available to help them learn our area and to share ideas. Transportation for hikes may be arranged upon request. Arrow has practiced massage for over 20 years. You can set up an appointment with her and the fee is $30 per hour.

Other things to note

Mackay area is in close approximation to lots of spectacular wilderness, fishing, hunting, boating, mountain biking, hot springs and many scenic ATV trails. Sun Valley is about an hour and a half away during the summer when the scenic mountain pass to get there is open. Its a wonderful drive. Copper Basin is known for its high altitude beauty and world class fishing. We are surrounded by BLM and national forests. The tallest mountain in the state, Mt. Borah at 12,662 feet, is 20 miles down the road and receives about 200 visitors daily in the summer for hiking and summit climbs. Great fishing is found on the Big Lost River only about 1.5 miles away, as well as the Mackay Reservoir at 5 miles away and up in Copper Basin. Restaurants are available in Mackay.

The city of Mackay offers a Farmer's Market every Saturday from 10am to 1pm, an old fashioned 4th of July parade, and a Beer Fest on the same day at Tourist Park, and the Mackay Barbecue (free to all) in September. Visit the Mackay City website for more details. The ATV rally is mid July and it had a fantastic turn out last year. Our high mountains are spectacular with many ATV trails. I don't even know where to begin to describe my experience in Mackay at Arrow and John's house. I arrived ridiculously late as I was driving from California. They left the light on and clear instructions about how to access the property in word parks. When l opened door, I was simply blown away. The clean lines, the lovely views from every well placed window, the natural materials and simple but functional kitchenette, the comfortable bed and natural bedding... I woke up to find myself surrounded by natural beauty. I could go on and on about the majesty and grace of those mountains, but you really just have to see for yourself. Be sure to check out Copper Basin and Corral Summit if you can. The other pertinent thing to mention here is how gracious and wonderful Arrow (and John!) are as hosts. I was made to feel beyond welcome by all the extra attention to detail and empathetic approach taken to hosting. I'm an Airbnb superhost myself, so the bar is high. Arrow surpasses it and sets her own. From interesting conversation to the gorgeous salad from Arrow's organic garden, to John's detailed instruction on how to get to the remote place I was heading - I felt buoyed and supported. I returned after a day's exploring with my face aching from smiling so much, and this Airbnb and it's wonderful hosts are no small part of the reason why.

I am a retired nurse and my husband is a retired architect. John is building our country home here in Mackay. We love to travel and do so in the winter to either Mexico or Southern Arizona, visiting national and state parks, cities, art galleries and just plan boon docking where we can. We have a 26 foot Wilderness trailer that we travel with but offer it as bed and breakfast in the summer here in Mackay. along with a studio apartment with a fantastic view. We know what its like to travel and love to meet people who enjoy traveling also, sharing experiences and places to go. We have traveled as far as Costa Rica and Belize and even drove to Guatemala with two small children with a cab over camper.

We have several organic gardens and I am the president of the local farmer's market where I sell some of our produce. We also love to paint. John does acrylic landscapes and I do pastels. Soon we will open a studio B&B suite on the second floor offering spectacular views of the mountains to complete our bed and breakfast retreat. We will also have a small gallery that features local artists.

Our dream is to create a hobby farm and are planning for chickens, a couple head of cattle and maybe a pigs. Although we are still in the early stages we have made a small pasture that irrigates from two ponds that make a nice scenic feature on our property which is nestled between mountains and looks down a dramatic valley with spectacular sunsets.

I do massage with many years of experience and am very interested in holistic health and organics. You can arrange to have a massage if you would like one. Massage is $30 per hour.
