Old stone house in beautiful Gran Sasso National Park village, with modern spacious kitchen with bbq/fireplace. 3 large rooms, patio with dinig table fresh herb garden and breathtaking views. The house comes with organic, sustainable & green amenities and cleaning products. All towels and linens and all basic cooking supplies are also provided. (price goes up in the winter to cover heating charges)

The space

Beautifully restored with original stone walls and a modern kitchen, the house is very cool in the summer and warm in the winter (central heating and a fire place/bbq). The rooms are oversized and have high ceilings (rare in the area) and all products used and amenities offered are green and eco-friendly. The ideal getaway. There is no internet in the house as we wanted to create a healthy-unplug-wifi free-stop-and-smell-the-roses-vacation-home. There is however wifi at the local Bar Vittoria where you can enjoy a nice coffee/tea/vino.

Guest access

The entire home is yours during your stay and there is a nice furnished patio for "al fresco" eating. Please be aware: you can not access the house by car. You will park in the main Piazza and walk up from there. It is a 3 min walk up with some stairs.

Interaction with guests

We have a wonderful woman in the village who looks after the house (Italian speaking) and I am always available for a chat or for advice, restaurant reservation, etc. I work half an hour from the village and we can definitely meet should you need anything. (I speak Italian, English, French and Spanish)

Other things to note

Leave everything behind. The house comes with everything you will need during your stay.

This place stole our hearts. As did the hosts. From the most awe-inspiring views across the mountains, to the most romantic bedroom imaginable; from the superbly-appointed chef's kitchen to the basket of culinary treats awaiting us on arrival, everything was perfect. As you make the ascent to Calascio, it's impossible not to feel you're in very special territory. We've visited quite a few lovely small towns in Italy, but Calascio has that rarefied air, stillness and profound peace that only comes with high altitudes. Catherine and François met us at the sweet local bar (where, much to our delight, we discovered you can also order your next day's fresh milk and bread) and escorted us to their beautiful and cosy stone home. There they began to induct us into the wonders and workings of the house and this Abruzzese high country. (Take heed of all their recommendations, culinary and otherwise. Ignore these at your peril! We ate some astoundingly good food and imbibed similarly astounding views we won't be forgetting any time soon.) This is a place you can genuinely spend time: unwind, walk forever toward snow-capped peaks, and nourish yourself with local fare by the inside fire, or at the many eateries in the surrounding towns. It was genuinely hard to tear ourselves away and we could only do so by vowing to return -- as soon as possible. Words can't convey the quality or depth of our experience here. Thank you so much Catherine and François for creating this magical home and for sharing it with us with such generosity of spirit. You two are golden!

If you're looking for a get-away where you can unplug in a perfect village with friendly neighbors, this is the spot! The hosts are fantastic and communicative and have laid out perfectly the expectations, local sites, restaurants and recommendations in an easy-to-read book in the house. Definitely recommended for an escape from the city life. Note: Italian skills *extremely* recommended for town (Catherine and Francois' English is perfect, so no worries on check-in) and this home not recommended for the mobility-challenged. Enjoy the fresh meat and cheese at the nearby town's meat shops and fresh eggs from the Calascio neighbors.

First of all, Catherine was our most complete and detailed ABNB host of all time. She is simply a natural at this gig. The place is spot-on accurate with her descriptions. Here are bullet highlights *Best equipped kitchen of any apartment I have rented in Italy (I have rented many) *Extraordinary local knowledge of the area...well above and beyond most needs *Details, explanations, clearly written guide to the area and the house *Multi-lingual host. Catherine's language skills are epic *Gorgeous location *Off the beaten track, but supposed to be

I couldn't think of a better word than "picturesque" to describe both the village and Catherine and her husband's home. It's hard to imagine just how beautiful this place is until you see it for yourself. We spent a week at Catherine's and would have liked to stay another. Her home is lovely, nestled among a winding walkway of cobblestones and buildings dating back 500+ years. The attention to detail in making the home comfortable to guests did not go unnoticed - reusable grocery bags, local goodies, a neat stack of firewood, clean towels, directions for getting fresh bread... what a treat! We hope to go back sometime soon!

Catherine was easy to deal with in advance and made sure we knew that her husband would meet us (she was out of the area). Francois was great, met us when we were done sight-seeing for the day in Campo Imperatore. We called 30 minutes in advance as we left Risto Mucciante (you must go here for a great grill experience) and he was waiting at the Bar. Pros- 1) Great location. Wonderful town, great to wander in Calascio or the other nearby towns (Rocca Calascio, Santo Stefano, Castel del Monte). 2) Beautiful Home. Outside is wonderful old stone, inside is a mix of modern (great kitchen) and stone wall and ceilings. Upstairs bedroom is romantic/beautiful with a comfortable bed. 3) Info in guidebook (written by Catherine) is exceptional. Found no faults. Helped to visit sites and find meals. 4) The kitchen. Said it above, and will say it again, if you like to cook some of your meals (and we do), you will enjoy have a well equipped kitchen. 5) Hosts provided a variety of fresh, organic fruits, pasta, and milk products. Made for an easy breakfast and meal the next day. Cons 1) You need to park in center of town and walk to house (less than 5 minutes) and depending on time of year may have to wait to park. All was fine for us, but could be an issue. Again - the rating should speak for itself: this place was a great vacation. Wish I could have spent longer... and wish we could have met Catherine in person. We really enjoyed our stay.

As we arrived in Calascio, Catherine and her husband accompanied us to their house and explained us the practical issues. A booklet written by Catherine gave us a useful insight what to do and see in the mountain villages.

We so enjoyed staying at Catherine's Stone House. We were warmly met and welcomed by Catherine - it would have been a challenge to find the house and parking on our own. The house is lovely - well decorated and equipped with all the utensils, gadgets, and amenities to make you feel totally at home. Catherine's artistic and photographic skills and her love and knowledge of food and the local community and area are all brought together in her house guide - a valuable resource to learn about and experience the area. The patio was a great place to eat and read and relax. We enjoyed walking the streets in the picturesque hillside village and our interactions with the kind and helpful townspeople. Vittoria's bar was more than a WI-FI spot - a chance to meet locals, have a morning coffee or afternoon drink, get fresh bread or cheese or visit the fruit truck. We can't wait to return to this lovely spot!
