Renovated August 2015, our cool duplex is located in a unique pocket of Cherrywood, minutes from downtown. This ground floor unit has all mod cons, hardwood floors, new bathroom and gourmet kitchen. You will love this space. AustinSTR #2015 OL 068823

The space

Our duplex is in an architecturally unique section of the Cherrywood neighborhood in East Austin. Sometimes called "Duplex Nation", the development was constructed in 1948 by a developer named Bascom Giles, who built the neighborhood to serve moderate income families following WWII. There are a few floor plans, but all are built out of cinder block bricks covered in stucco and have a distinct style compared to the surrounding neighborhoods. Duplex Nation is a good mix of renters and live-in owners, with a quirky style that enabled the development to be added to the National Register of Historic Places as the Delwood Duplex Historic District in 2011.

We have fully renovated the inside of both the upstairs and downstairs apartments. Refinished hardwood floors, refinished yellow pine doors and updated paint in all rooms. The gourmet kitchen is brand new, including cabinets, countertops, stainless steel appliances and a dish washer. In addition, we have removed some of the interior walls to allow for an open concept kitchen, dining and living area. We updated the bathroom, and to save space, we have done away with the bathtub, but we have a very luxurious new shower that should not disappoint. We have a tankless, on-demand water heater, so no worries about running out of hot water. The space has central air and heat.

We provide access to a washing machine and dryer for our guests (but please use the soap provided, as it is a high efficiency washer).

We have a couple of spaces for off street parking, up the alley in the back of our place (though word of warning - the city does not maintain the alley, so there are a few potholes - take it slow going back there). You can also park on the street out front.

Guest access

Our place is an upstairs/downstairs duplex. Unit A is a self-contained apartment downstairs, and Unit B is a self-contained apartment upstairs. We do rent out both units as vacation rentals, so there may be other guests when you are there. We will let you know if there will be guests in the other unit when you are staying there.

Interaction with guests

We live in another duplex in Duplex Nation, so we are generally around and will be happy to suggest local restaurants and activities to those not familiar with Austin. You will have a full kitchen downstairs, but we will stock the fridge with a few necessities to get you started when you arrive (some chips and salsa, beer, milk butter, etc.). David speaks a little Spanish and P.Y. is fluent in Mandarin Chinese and certain Chinese dialects. Anything we can do to assist in your stay, we will do.

Other things to note

Each room has a queen size bed and sleeps two. The couch in the living room is a great modern design that folds out into a bed with a full queen size mattress (NOT the thin, uncomfortable kind!!!). Bedding for the couch will be provided. As such, we can accommodate up to six people in the flat, but we charge a $25 surcharge, per night, for each person over four.

Also, unlike the upstairs unit, this unit has a small bonus room off the kitchen and laundry rooms that functions as a good study/workspace. Come write your next novel in Austin!

Oh, and if you like the pictures of our place here on Airbnb, note that we used Alecia Cooper with Dearcharli Photography. She's even better with portraits, and anyone in town who is looking for a photographer should give her a call!

Absent specific alternative arrangements, for longer-term visitors we will arrange for a light cleaning and a change of towels and linens on a weekly basis, no extra charge. However generally, please be prepared to re-use your towels during your stay and to clean up after yourself as you would in your own home.

Austin recycles, so we will have a separate bin for recycling.

Smaller and medium-sized pets are allowed. We do not currently have a fenced backyard at the duplex, so larger animals are not encouraged, but we will try to be flexible, within the limits of the property, and we are always happy to discuss proposed arrangements so that you can travel with your furry companions.

No smoking in the apartment. Please go outside and dispose of your butts in a considerate manner.

You must also acknowledge
Must climb stairs - There are ten steps from the street to the ground floor. In back there is an alley where there are three easier steps to/from the back of the house.
Potential for noise - This is an upstairs/downstairs 1949 duplex. We have soundproofed as much as possible, but there is potential for minor noise from upstairs.
Some spaces are shared - The apartments are completely separate, but there is a shared laundry room on the property.

Very comfortable and worked well for us. Would certainly stay here again. Loved the home made apple pie baked by David's wife and the items of food given to us upon arrival. Very considerate of David.

David's place was super clean and comfortable, and he and his wife were thoughtful and accommodating throughout our stay there. Beds and even the pull-out couch were comfy! My friends and I all agreed that this was one of the most pleasant Airbnb experiences we've had.

David's place was really nice & I appreciated all of his thoughtful touches - he left us chips & salsa, beer, and sparkling water. He was also very kind and provided a bunch of recommendations for things to do around town.

World travelers, recently returned home to Austin after a long time living in Asia. David is from Texas, David's wife P.Y. is from Singapore, where we lived for 13 years, but before all that we lived and met in Edinburgh, Scotland. We have wandered Mongolia, climbed volcanoes in Indonesia, trekked Scotland and drunk wine in Tuscany, among other good times. We love meeting new people. P.Y. is known to bake frequently. David is known to eat what P.Y. bakes, but he is willing to share. Looking forward to bringing the world to our place in Austin.
