About this listing

A wonderful opportunity to stay in a National Trust property located in the Old town with spectacular views of the Castle and 360 views of the city. This spacious apartment oozes with history & charm and was home to Sir Patrick Geddes in Circa 1890.

The space

A very special apartment oozing with old worldly charm! Very spacious Arts and Crafts style period 1890 apartment. Built by Sir Patrick Geddes the apartment has many original features and is situated right next door to Edinburgh Castle in the old town at the top of the royal mile.
The apartment has been carefully restored retaining many of the original features and has been furnished in the traditional style.
Absolutely Wonderful location with outstanding 360 degree views across Edinburgh including probably the best views of the castle in the city right next door.
(The Tattoo event stand blocks the view of the Castle during the months between July to September.)

Guest access

There are many cafes, bars and restaurants that are easily accessed right on the doorstep.
The flat is located in the Old town just a few steps to from the Caste esplanade with direct access to the Royal Mile.

Other things to note

The apartment is on the 4th storey and is not suitable for guests with mobility issues.
The apartment looks onto the castle esplanade therefore during the months of June to September before and during Edinburgh festival the tattoo stand is erected adjacent to the Apartment therefore blocks out the view of the castle.

However there are still magnificent views across to Princess street gardens, sea views towards the firth of forth and views overlooking the Royal mile.
The festival can be very loud with the traditional tattoo show and fireworks display during August.
Please note that the erection of the temporary tattoo stand in late May and June can generate some noise during the day.
The apartment is very central and has easy access to shops, supermarkets etc. It also has many bars cafes and restaurants right on the door step.
There is a £20 surcharge for late check in after 9pm
Not suitable for stag and hen parties

Four of us stayed in this property for 3 nights at the beginning of August. The flat itself is lovely--high ceilings with crown molding, beautiful built-in artwork on the walls, fresh paint, carpet etc. It was also very spacious compared to other units we rented. The furnishings fit with the style of the unit. The kitchen was generally well equipped and spacious. The oven was a little tricky--if the time isn't set on it it doesn't work. If you plan to use it, please make sure you check it with the property manager on check in. Note that at the beginning of August, the view of the castle is blocked with the grandstands for the military tattoo, and you will be serenaded each night until 11-12pm and early morning before the castle opens, with bands practicing for the event that starts around 8/4. This was novel at first, but did get old after a few days. The windows block a lot of sound, but not all. The unit is at a great location relative to the castle and old town--right at the top of the hill and has great views of the city and also of the ocean. The grocery store is not far (.3 mi) but requires you to lug your groceries up a steep hill, and then up the 4 stories to the flat entrance. This unit has 2 bathrooms, one with a bathtub only and one with a shower. We didn't use the bathtub but the shower worked fine. Washer and dryer are small but also worked fine. The property manager and owner were very responsive to questions/comments that we had including bringing over a new hairdryer and fixing a broken window latch.

The apartment at Ramsay Gardens is a gem and I would highly recommend it for its location, its history, its amenities, and its layout. There were six of us staying there and it still felt so spacious with its large kitchen, two bathrooms, four bedrooms, a dining room and a beautiful front parlour. Being high up beside Edinburgh Castle the views from all the windows was spectacular. From the front parlour you are literally looking on the start of the Royal Mile. What a great location for getting anywhere in Edinburghs old town (only a pleasant one mile walk to Holyrood Palace and thenQueens Gallery). In a city full of history, you are actually living in a piece of it when you stay here. Built in the 1890s by the famous urban planner Patrick Geddes, you are actually staying in the apartment in which he lived (it is now part of the National Trust). Because it is so high up, there are a lot is stairs to climb before reaching the fourth floor (no lift). But once you're settled in you quickly get used to it and realize that most of Edinburgh involves climbing. I would highly recommend this place for its beauty, comfort, location and history.

Elegant and comfortable. Even with the stadium constructed there were so many other gorgeous views!

This accommodation is really amazing. We felt like royalty from the 18th century staying here. The windows overlook the entrance to Edinburgh Castle. We really enjoyed the experience.

The Flat is a 15 minute walk from main train station. It is located at the very top of the Royal Mile with most beautiful views of Royal mile and of Edinburg. The views were breathtaking and we enjoyed seeing Edinburg from a very high perch. Between May and August there is no view of Castle due to Stadium Seating installed between flat and Castle. The rooms were very relaxing, the bay window very relaxing, and window overlooking the Royal mile was the most enjoyable. My family will definitely come visit this place again.
