Just south of Kona and centrally located for day trips to Volcanoes, we are minutes from two-step, turtles and amazing sunsets. Enjoy the tranquility of Hawaii off the beaten path!

Minimum 3 night stay. Ask for a special rate quote for extended stays of more than 1 month.

The space

You will fall in love with this spacious and sunny Ohana just minutes from snorkeling and South Kona beaches. Lovingly restored, this cottage features a 180 degree view surrounded by lush tropical flowers and looking out on an unforgettable sunset view.

We promise you will love this amazing bedroom with its picture windows looking out on lush tropical flowers and trees--it feels like you are in your own private Swiss Family Robinson but without sacrificing on amenities. The windows look out on acres of tropical flowers and fruits like mangos, papayas and plumeria.

The bedroom has a queen bed and separate sitting room that is perfect for curling up and reading about the fascinating history of this ancient part of the Big Island and its historic settlement by Captain Cook. In the distance is Kealakekua Bay, site of James Cook's first encounter with the people of Hawaii and later the place where he met his end. It is said that the bay is protected by the spirits of the alii, or chiefs, that led this proud nation prior to the arrival of the missionaries after Cook's discovery.

The bath in this cottage was practically built for royalty--it features a large jetted tub -and marble surround as well as a separate shower and dressing area. The tub peeks into the bedroom and out onto the property through two windows that allow for tons of natural light and a great cross-breeze on tradewind evenings.

The kitchenette is outfitted with a refrigerator, convection oven, two-burner hot plate, toaster, coffee maker, blender and microwave as well as a bar for two. The living room has a pullout couch that can provide additional sleeping space as well as a flat panel TV. The entire property features free wifi and additional services such as a dvd player are available upon request.

We are a quick five minute drive from the famed "two-step" for the best snorkeling the island has to offer. If you get down there bright and early you may be lucky enough to swim with the pod of dolphins that call these amazing beaches their home. Beach chairs and towels are available with the cottage.

The owners are onsite and we are always happy to help you plan or make recommendations so that you can make the most of your stay on the island. We offer free farm tours and provide a seasonal basket of our farm-fresh produce to help make your stay unique and special. We would be honored to have you as our guests and do everything we can to help make your trip to Hawaii the trip of a lifetime!

Guest access

The cottage overlooks the Macadamia Nut Orchard and guests are free to enjoy the spacious grounds. There is a private outdoor eating area with a gas grill and convenient parking. The shared washer and dryer is located near the shop space.

Interaction with guests

While we live onsite we do prefer to give you your space and privacy to enjoy your vacation getaway. We are always happy to answer questions and give you a tour of the farm (with advance notification).

Other things to note

The Sunset Cottage is a private cottage but it is an Ohana, which is a Hawaiian cottage attached to another house. The two are separated by a breezeway and the cottage has its own parking and private entrance.

Recent update-we are currently experiencing a drought that, while it has minimized the threat of dengue fever, has the farm looking a little sunburnt. Thankfully it has only killed grasses and some more fragile plants and the grounds still have plenty of lush areas to enjoy. We are pleased to report that there are no existing cases of dengue and haven't had any in more than six weeks.

Nice. Quiet. Secluded. Not far from the Painted Church, Two Step (where we swam with spinner dolphins without having to pay a tour company), City of Refuge, and Kealakekula Bay all of which in our opinion are the best snorkeling in the area. Hosts were very accommodating. Shared produce and fruits with us throughout our extended stay.

This was a fun place to come and stay for a few days on our trip to the Big Island. We loved being able to walk around the farm, and were told we could pick whatever we wanted! We didn't actually pick anything, but we were so happy with the delicious avocados we were given! The kids loved the friendly kitties on the property. We had a great time, mahalo!

I highly recommend this place. It had everything our family of 3 needed, including internet access and beach supplies! There is also a gas grill that we used often. Occasionally, you will get a wake-up call from the birds on the property but that was not a problem for us. We like to get our day started early!

We felt like we had our own hide-away in one of the most beautiful areas on earth -- very private & quiet, yet not far at all from the beaten path. That and mac nuts for the gathering. Mandi was an excellent host and was able to answer all of our questions about exploring the area. We hope to return!

This cottage is located on a beautiful, peaceful 10 acre farm that we fully enjoyed for our one week stay on the Big Island. It's a short drive to amazing beaches and snorkeling spots, groceries & restaurants. We strolled around the avocado and macadamia nut orchards (and other fruit trees) and enjoyed many quiet evenings at this great spot. Thank you!

If you are looking for a place away from busy Kona this one is right. A lush orchard, quiet and the perfect location to start your day tours north, south or east.
