Private and cozy one bedroom casita located in the small town of San Sebastian Etla, close to downtown Oaxaca, Villa de Etla, and San Agustín Etla, offers full kitchen and private bathroom, terrace, pool and lots of space surrounding it.

The space

Brand new adobe casita has a private entrance and plenty of parking. There is a comfortable terrace with hammock which is perfect for morning coffee or evening cocktails. The terrace overlooks the natural swimming pool and surrounding garden. Great, well stocked kitchen with plenty of space. Compfy bedroom with queen bed. The casita is a perfect retreat for work or great place to come home to after a day discovering the beauty of Oaxaca.

Guest access

Large landscaped garden with plenty of room for dogs to play.
The pool has a filter and uses some chemicals, I try to keep them at minimal, so it is possible that even though it is clean, it might have a greenish color but it is safe to use.
The pool needs lots of maintenance. I will be coming now and then to do cleaning or add chemicals to it. I will let you know in advance to be out of your way as much as possible, expect daily visits to do this or that.
If you park your car inside the property, park closer to the gate than the house, there is grass growing around that I would like to keep as nice as possible.
We just added a SCOOTER that we will have available at an additional nominal rent to move around the towns of Etla if you wish to do so.

Interaction with guests

I have lived in Oaxaca since '99 and know the city and surrounding area very well. I am happy to answer questions about sights and the many incredible restaurants. I can arrange pickup from the airport and know of several great guides

Other things to note

The Neighborhood
The village of San Sebastián Etla is only about half an hour from the center of the bustle of the city of Oaxaca. But it is a completely rural setting, nestled in the valley surrounded by the mountains.
(Some great hiking trails). A two minute walk up my lane, puts you on the road that runs through the village. Here you can hail a collectivo (local taxis) to get into the city for ten pesos. On the village road, in walking distance are several restaurants with authentic Oaxacan menus. There is even a Chinese restaurant! We have a great little mini-super for basics. We are very lucky to be ten minutes from The Center for the Arts of San Agustin. (CASA). A beautiful nineteenth century cotton factory that, under the patronage of Francisco Toledo, one of Mexicos most famous artist, has been turned into a beautiful space for shows, classes, and performance. It adjoins a working handmade paper factory, which you can visit and see beautiful papers being made.
San Sebastián is a very special village. It is very authentic and provides an insight into pueblo life. Wedding parades or funeral parades are lead by brass bands. The night air can be punctuated by a braying mule, night larks and always a dog or two,or three!

House Rules

If you are traveling with a dog please use the old pooper scoop. Friendly dogs are welcome outdoors, not indoors. I am sorry I can not allow cats. I am allergic. My dogs come out to play a lot on your side of the property a few hours a day I let them run around. They might get very friendly with visitors, I hope you like my dogs and this does not bother you.

Water comes from a well to an underground water tank, so it is ok for most people, I use it for everything except drinking. If you notice a lack of water coming out of the faucets let me know, the tank might be low, I will refill it.

Most lights in the house are LEDS, still it would be much appreciated if you turn most lights and electrical things off when you are not using them or leave at night. Same in the case of water, please be sure to shut all faucets well since there is a pressure pump turned on demand, any leak will make it turn on constantly as is the case with the heater.
The water heater works on demand and it is very sensitive to adjustments. Try leaving the knob all the way in HOT so that way it won’t be turning on and off, this will be better if you want constant warm water. If it is too hot for you, we can adjust the heater.

We share the wifi. If you are having trouble connecting, let me know. I will reset the modem or disconnect all my wifi so you get better reception.

Bringing a one or two guests to the pool or dinner is possible as long as this doesn’t become too loud or too late so other neighbors don’t find it annoying. Please let me know if you would be bringing guests and how many in advance, anyone staying late or over night will be charged an extra US$10.

This is a great place to stay if you want to relax. At the same time it's close to the city and beautiful Oaxacan surroundings for daily trips. The host, Cynthia was great and the house felt very cosy and well equipped. Highly recommended for your visit to Oaxaca region.

The place is great. Just far enough outside Oaxaca to feel like you're in the foothills, but close enough to get a taxi in and out for dinner or shopping. Look for burgundy red and white taxis which are 'collectivios' meaning that you share them with other passengers. It is maximum 15 pesos into Oaxaca centre. And 8 pesos the other way to San Agustin. Amazingly cheap. Flag them down. The area itself San Sebastián Etla is an interesting and very safe and tranquil. A very short taxi to the next village gets you to San Agustin Etla which is magic. There's a huge textile factory there which is one of the best art/museum displays I've ever seen. The building uses water off the mountains flowing over its walls to keep it cool. There's also a paper making factory tucked away below it. A few very good comerdors to be found if you take a stroll too. San Sebastián Etla (where the property is) had a couple of restaraunts next door that we would have like to have tried, but we're closed for Christmas. Cynthia's property is extremely private, and beautifully designed. Lovely hot shower, cosy quiet bedroom, and a very well equipped kitchen with open plan lounge. There is also a lovely patio with chairs and hammock which goes out to a very big garden with our favourite part - a gorgeous natural swimming pool with mountains in the distance. Lots of sun in the day so the pool is a welcome treat. The best bits are the hosts, Cynthia and Mike, who went far beyond the call of duty to make sure we were welcome and happy. Thank you guys so much; you made Christmas away from home so much better. And their two dogs who can come into the garden should you wish (or not) are just super fun and cute. All in all a fabulous stay. Can't recommend more.

We absolutely loved staying in Cynthia's place! It is a peaceful, quiet and lovely place to stay. The house is a perfect size for 2, beautiful designed and decorated in a minimal and sophisticated style. The kitchen is well equipped-- we enjoyed preparing meals for ourselves here. The patio with hammock is a perfect place to relax and gaze at the surrounding mountains. We swam every day in the beautiful natural pool (loved that there were minimal chemicals and no chlorine). Etla is a beautiful place to explore-- we had been in downtown Oaxaca for a few weeks and enjoyed the quiet, laid-back nature of the town and the beauty of the countryside. This is a perfect place to visit C.A.S.A. --an amazing art center high in San Augustin-- Cynthia was kind enough to give us a lift to a beautiful concert there, it was one of the most amazing cultural experiences we had in Oaxaca. We took hikes in the surrounding hills and LOVED spending time with the pups Lola and Pepita, who quickly adopted us, and getting to know Cynthia who was a fantastic host. This is a perfect place to stay!

After a 14 hr international flight, Cynthia's bungalow was an oasis! We struggled with jet lag for the first few days so weren't very sociable, but Cynthia checked in with us daily to make sure we were ok. We had tonnes of privacy though and full access to the beautiful pool. Super relaxing environment with easy access to local sites like San Augustin and Villa de Etla. Local taqueirias very very tasty and cheap! Locals friendly and we felt very safe walking around and catching local collectivos. The best part? The two dogs in residence...Pepita and Lola who would come to visit regularly!! The bungalow is very generous and comfortable. Highly recommended.

This sweet little oasis was exactly what we needed to unwind after a few days in hectic Mexico City, and after months of daily life. From the beginning, Cynthia was very communicative and helpful. She arranged for a driver to pick us up from the airport, and when we arrived we found that she had stocked the casa with a jug of water, cooking supplies like oil and salt, eggs, and even coffee to get us going in the morning. Her two delightful dogs spent the mornings sunning on our side of the yard and were welcome company. Cynthia was welcome too, always available but also giving us space. There is a small market a short walk away where we picked up supplies to cook meals at home. The place is about 10km from Oaxaca City center, but catching the collectivos on the main road was simple and actually quite fun. Grab any of them heading into town, and find one with "Etla" on the side to take home. We found it to be a healthy distance away from the main city. The fresh air, mountain views, and country vibe made for a relaxing time. Now that we've seen all the Oaxaca sites, someday I'd love to come back and just stay at the house all day reading, writing, and gazing at the mountains. Thanks, Cynthia!!

This was a great experience on all levels. The house was beautiful and staying outside of the city was nice and better than I expected. Going back and forth to town was no problem We loved the pool and went swimming every day and relaxed poolside in the sun. We loved our host, Cynthia. She is kind, thoughtful and generous and a talented architect and designer and so the guest house is comfortable and cool. Can´t wait to come back to see Cynthia and enjoy Oaxaca in such an authentic way.
