We are located 15 minutes from Durango, on the quiet expanse of Florida Mesa. We live right on the border between mountain and canyon-lands ecosystems...we are hosts to mountain and canyon wildlife from deer and 'coons to assorted birds, prickly pear and cedar trees as well as aspen and Colorado columbines. We live at the center of a myriad outdoor pursuits including water sports, biking, hiking, and camping. We are also close to Mesa Verde and on the narrow gauge train-line to Silverton.
Your comfy stay will be in the Green Room in our home.
Bright and colorful, this room has a double bed and is as warm or cool as you want it to be. With your own window opening to the back of our property, and shaded by the roof, there is no need for A/C. Our whole house, and the Green Room in particular, is well insulated against the winter chill and summer heat.
With your own small fridge and microwave, water and dishes, The Green Room is a lovely retreat, but you are also welcome to mingle with our family as much as you would like.
You have a small refrigerator and microwave in your room, but are also welcome to cook and eat in our kitchen. Please feel free to hang out in our living room with us where you can come read, listen to music, swap stories or watch DVDs. We have no cable.
Your shared bathroom is off the living room, and has a 5' tub and shower.
We live on just over 3 acres of open country, available for you to explore. While smoking is not allowed in the house, you can smoke outside.
You are also welcome to keep your bike, or other sporting equipment on our property during your stay with us.
Interaction with guests
It is our hope to be the sort of hosts you want us to be. We want to insure your privacy, interacting with you as much as you wish. While we love to swap stories and offer recommendations we only want to do so as much as you want us to.
Jay is a Designer/Builder (Stellar Jay Designs), and has a shop on our property. His schedule is irregular and dependent on where his clients need him to be. While he is often finishing cabinetry in his shop, he also leaves to work in and around town.
Sonja is a teacher at Mercy Employee Childcare. She is around the house most weekends, and in the evenings.
If you happen to be a train buff, we have your connections: both our daughter and son-in-law work for the train. :)
Other things to note
We have a doggie named Yaz (after the Red Sox left fielder, Carl Yastrzemski. Jay is a New Englander and ball fan). We also have a kittie named Piper. Yaz is quite personable and curious about our guests, while Piper mostly stays away, dropping by occasionally to be fed.
Guest pets are not allowed (Yaz and Piper would not understand).
Smoking is not allowed in the house, but you are welcome to smoke outside.
This is Colorado...you are welcome to smoke weed outside on our property, as long as it does not lead to loud parties.
Our guests are welcome to entertain their own guests, again, as long as our household and quiet family neighborhood are undisturbed.
I am a preschool teacher here in Durango. I live with my husband and younger daughter. Our eldest recently moved out of the nest. My husband and I celebrated our 25th wedding anniversary in the spring of 2015. We traveled to Florence, Italy where we were delighted to stay with Airbnb hosts.
I have traveled to Europe a number of times and speak some Spanish. Jay and I spent our honeymoon in Spain. We like to travel slowly, staying in one spot for a number of days and getting to know it before moving on, rather than hitting a jillion places, whirl-wind style.
We are very glad to be Airbnb hosts. Now that our older daughter is gone, we have re-arranged our house to more easily accommodate overnight guests. We enjoy getting to know new people and love hosting. Durango is a terrific place and it makes us happy when people come to see what our town has to offer.
