Kepuhi Beach resort was formally known as Kaluakoi Villas at the Sheraton Hotel. The Louisiana Land Corporation started Kaluakoi in 1977. Of the 300 units on property, 150 belonged to the hotel and 149 units (ours) were privately owned but still operated by the hotel. Sheraton very successfully managed the hotel for the first 10 years. Tokyo Kosan then bought the hotel and Colony Hotels ran the day-to-day operation. The hotel began to go downhill. At this time, some of the private units formed their own rental pool called "The Villas". Tokyo Kosan was unsuccessful in running the business and the complex fell into disarray. The hotel closed, as well as the restaurant and golf course. Most of the jobs on the west end were lost. The 149 private units continued to operate, some with "The Villas" and others on their own. In 2002 Molokai Ranch bought the property and has since upgraded some of the infrastructure. The Kepuhi Resort Association, have a cross easement with the Ranch to use their pool and other agreements for electricity, water, and other fixed costs.

Driving On Moloka'i

Even though it's the same road, you'll note from the map that it has two highway numbers. 450 & 460. Kamehameha V Highway (450) starts at Kaunakakai and ends 27 miles (43km) east at Halawa.
Maunaloa Highway (460) also begins at Kaunakakai, passes the airport at Ho'olehua and ends 17 miles (27km) west at the village of Maunaloa. Turn at mile 15 to reach the Kaluakoi Resort area. To get to Kualapu'u, Kala'e and the Kalaupapa lookout, take Highway 470 where it branches from 460 in the middle of the island.
There are green mile posts every mile. Directions to someone's house, a resort or a great beach usually include the nearest mile marker number or landmark. For example; “My house is east 6/10s past mile 12. Mauka (mountain) side" or “Wavecrest resort is at exactly mile 13 east, makai (ocean side)."
While the driving times below may seem a little high for the distance involved, they are based on some real life-on-moloka'i factors. The highest posted speed limit anywhere on the island is 45mph (72kph) and in many places it's less.
Maunaloa to Kaunakakai – 17 miles (27km) – 25 minutes
Kaluakoi Resort to Kaunakakai – 22 miles (35km) – 35 minutes
Kaluakoi Resort to Kalaupapa lookout – 24 miles (38km) – 35 minutes
Kaluakoi Resort to Airport – 15 miles (24km) – 20 minutes
Kaunakakai to Wavecrest Resort – 13 miles (21km) – 20 minutes
Kaunakakai to Halawa – 27 miles (43km) – 50 minutes
Kaunakakai to Kalaupapa lookout – 10 miles (16km) – 20 minutes
Kaunakakai to Airport – 8 miles (13km) – 20 minutes

Hau`oli Hula Hideaway House Rules
Malama is a Hawaiian word meaning "to take loving care of, to respect, to honor, to protect and nurture." As a noun it means kindness, caring, thoughtfulness. When Hawaiians tell you "Malama pono," they are literally saying "Take good care of yourself." ("Pono" means good or proper or excellent.) So when we say malama in reference to our home, we mean this special Hawaiian thoughtfulness and awareness of your relation to your surroundings. It is in this spirit of malama that we open our beloved condo to you. Likewise, we ask our guests to show this same caring thoughtfulness, kindness and awareness. We welcome your comments. Please sign our guest log book before your departure. Mahalo :)

Here are some ways you can malama our beloved condo:
1.PLEASE LEAVE YOUR SHOES OUTDOORS. An import Hawaiian custom is we remove our shoes before entering a home, because a home is considered a sacred space.
2. SMOKING. The Condo and the Lanai are a non-smoking environment. Smoking anywhere on the property is prohibited. This is to extend the malama concept to other guests who may visit the home. We take allergens very seriously, because one of the owners and some of our guests suffer from asthma. The slightest trace of cigarette smoke clinging to the walls and furniture can trigger an asthma attack, which can be life-threatening. Please properly dispose of the cigarette butts in the trash. Failing to abide by this rule will result in loss of your entire security deposit.
3.HOUSEKEEPING: Your vacation accommodations will be cleaned to quality standards prior to your arrival and after your departure. You will be responsible for the cleaning of your unit during your stay and for leaving the unit in good condition at check-out including; all trash out and placed in appropriate outside garbage collection containers and all dishes washed and put away. We respectfully request that you remember that you are staying in someone's home during your vacation; please treat it with the care you would your own.
4.TURN OFF ALL LIGHTS, FANS, ELECTRONICS & COFFEE MAKER every time you leave the house, even for a short while be Green and Conserve Energy. Electric power in Hawaii is expensive (5 times more costly per kilowatt than in other areas of the USA). It's also dirty. To generate electricity, Hawaii Electric Company imports oil via huge tankers and burns it, releasing toxic pollutants into the air. A smaller portion of Hawaii's electricity comes from geothermal plants, which release another set of toxins. Geothermal also involves drilling into the volcano, which many Native Hawaiians believe is offensive to Pele, the goddess of the volcano. So if we extend the concept of malama to consider our relation to our environment, as well as to respect the Native Hawaiian religion, we must be careful to minimize our use of electricity.
5. Close and LOCK all doors, deadbolts and windows anytime you leave the home.
6. Linens are provided with our accommodations. Bed linens are not to be removed from the unit. Guests will need to provide their own paper items and cleaning supplies. An initial set up of trash liners, soap, and toilet tissue is provided. Extra items needed are the responsibility of the guest. Again bedding is NOT to be brought outside.
7. INDOOR FURNITURE IS NOT TO BE MOVED OUTSIDE. All furniture should remain inside the condo. Furniture can be easily damaged when moving. Please treat this home as your own, as it will help assure our vacation homes are in the condition you expect when you arrive.
8. The septic system serves well if we don't give it “indigestion" by flushing inorganic items other than toilet paper, or by pouring grease into the sinks. Hygiene products such as wipes and tampons labeled “flushable" are not “digestible" by septic tanks. DON'T FLUSH THEM; dispose of them in the wastebasket. Do not use chlorine bleach in the laundry or elsewhere in the house.
9. PROVIDE NO SNACKS FOR ANTS OR ROACHES. If we never entice insects into the home, we'll have no reason to poison or kill them. So be careful to tightly seal food containers or put them in the fridge, wipe up spills and crumbs from the counters, stove, sink and floor, and stack unwashed dishes in the dishwasher and close it.
10. PETS. Though we love animals, No animals or pets of any kind can be kept, allowed or permitted on or in the premises according to Kepuhi Resort Association Regulations.
11. Locked cabinets are for owners use only
12. KEYS: Condo is equipped with a lockbox for initial check in – please return the key to the lockbox and use the keys that are inside the property during your stay to avoid lock out. If you lock the keys in the house there is a fee of $50.00 during regular business hours or $100.00 after business hours for key service. This fee is due at time of service for locksmith.
13. DAMAGES: Please notify us BEFORE your departure of any damages that may have occurred so that damages may be considered for coverage under Damage Waiver included in the Processing Fee.
14. DISCHARGING FIREWORKS, SPARKLERS, OR FIREARMS IS PROHIBITED. Fire extinguisher is located under the sink in the kitchen.
15. Please do NOT use any of our pots or pans on outdoor grills.
16. Please do NOT sit on furniture in wet swimsuits or with suntan oil on.
17. QUIET HOURS are from 10 pm to 8 am. In the malama spirit, please respect your neighbors.
18. Please do NOT DISCONNECT OR REARRANGE ANY WIRING TO OR FROM THE TV. If you have any problems, please call.
19. IS THE RENTER'S RESPONSIBILITY TO EXPLAIN THESE RULES TO THEIR GUESTS AND TO ABIDE BY THESE RULES. ANY EXTRA CHARGES THAT MAY BE ASSESSED TO OWNER, ALONG WITH ANY DAMAGE EXPENSE, WILL BE DEDUCTED FROM SECURITY DEPOSIT.
20.CHECK OUT IS 10:00 AM – Please be Malama (respectful) in spirit by adhering to the checkout times so that future guests will arrive to the same clean conditions and amenities. In some instances later check out times can be arrange in advance based on scheduling :)

This location is in building 14 of kehui beach resort on the first floor. Close to West side beaches & a general store on location. Quiet, peaceful spot with friendly staff willing to answer any questions you may have. Laundry is available for 1.75 to wash & to dry in building 16. It's peace of paradise! Apartment was cozy and fully equipped with beautiful "back yard". We enjoyed our meals with amazing sea view from terrace. Kepuhi is on great location. There are 4 beaches from walking distance up to 10 minutes drive. We swam with kids (1,5 and 3,5 yo) in winter time which is great and kids also enjoyed sand. But most impressive was wildlife. We had welcome whales performance right there in Kepuhi. Monk seals and deers also were there every day. We had best coffee ever on Molokai. It's Coffees of Hawaii, Island princess. It has dash of vanilla bean. Big recommendation. It's hard to put all impressions in few words. Too bad it's far from us and we can't go back. Perfect quiet spot to enjoy day by day, hour by hour. Time goes slow there and brings only happiness.

Neat and tidy little condo very close to the ocean with sunset ocean views. You can hear the waves crashing from your condo! More appropriate for adults with young kids than 4 adults as it is a cozy space. I went in winter so the waves were pretty awe inspiring and the beaches were more or less deserted. There is a tiny little grocery store close by with the basics or you can drive into town - about 30 minutes. Just a side note, if you are super sensitive to noise, you can hear your neighbours! There are quiet hours in effect which people adhere to though :)

Thank you Raahil for your feedback and staying with us. I am glad you enjoyed your stay. I apologize that you had some noisy neighbors. Wishing you well in the new year. Mahalo :)
