If you want to explore around Wujiaochang and Fudan, you could not miss the excellent airbnb house owned by Happy, who is an active and kind hip-hop man in University Road. I booked the house for an video interview, so I would like a room which is quiet and clean for the background, Happy's house really meet my requirements which is as comfortable and convenient as home. Moreover, Happy's warm welcome and guidance makes me feel like I am visiting a friend here. Btw, University Road is a decent and delicate road full of solutions, you could find cuisines from all over the world, massages, games, stores and etc. here.

AirBnb is only as good as their hosts. Wei (Happy is his English name) is playing a serious game with local authorities by registering his guests either with different addresses and accommodating too many people (Nine at one point) in the apartment. Strict violations in the attempt to make the most income. I would not recommend using Airbnb in China for long term stay (more than a few days). If you are going to live in China, stay in a hotel until you make arrangements for a long term accommodation. Below are is the review of my three of four week stay at this accommodation. Facts: The Bad: - The pictures are VERY outdated. Now the apartment is filled with clutter. All the CD's and tapes on the shelves are still in the plastic wrapping. - My frustrations with the accommodation is not getting the Registration document and the NUMBER of people in the accommodation. - Upon arrival in China, you must report your accommodation with the police within 48 hours. The form is called [Registration Form of Temporary Residence]. Hotels do this task for you. But if you were to stay in a rental accommodation or as a guest at a friend's house, this must be done in person. - Happy does not provide a rental contract and claims that the Airbnb guests are friends to the police. - Happy prefers for people to book for a short period and then negotiate a better rate outside of Airbnb to avoid Airbnb charging both landlord and tenant. I tried to explain to him paying a fee to Airbnb should not be an issue, because you are leveraging on their website hosting and marketing. He either did not understand or did not like it. - At the police station, Happy claimed that I was his friend visiting the country. FALSE. I am a student at FUDAN University and I have the documents to prove it but he told me to hide it. - Other tenant got the registration document because they were staying at a different address. He said he would try to list me in the other address. Never happened and I never wanted it. - He also said, after I was not given the document, that we can claim that I am here for business. I said No, I was not going to lie to the police for him. - I did not get the Registration document. This left me feeling concerned about what might happen when I move to another place and register with the police. Fortunately, the real estate agent provided all the documents I needed. - I asked Happy what I should do now, his response was that I should try to another Airbnb and see if they can help me. Apparently Airbnb hosts are not allowed to register foreign guests. - I moved out on the third week out of the four weeks I had paid for. I did not inform Happy that I was...

Response from Wei:
Hi Ali, I’m deeply sorry that you had an unpleasant experience staying at my place. Please at least allow me to offer some explanations. I think part of the reason is due to a lack of better communication between us. First of all, I want to emphasize that my place is not a hotel, and the accommodation was booked through the platform of Airbnb. I have received many foreign guests to this date, except for students who have to register at Fudan University, which was not a common practice as a matter of fact, none of them required a [Registration Form of Temporary Residence] as you mentioned. And for this special request, out of kindness rather than an obligation, I would try to assist some guests according to the length of their stay. Again, I want to point out that was not my obligation and that form was also not compulsory for all foreign guests. Upon your arrival, it happened that I was also hosting another two students from Fudan University in need of this form, so I thought perhaps I could assist all three of you together. Now it turned out the other two students got their forms successfully and unfortunately your request was rejected by the local police, the exact reason for the rejection was not specified by the police, they simply mentioned some applicants need more background check. I want it to be clear that I played no part in their judgement and I was not in a position to influence the outcome of it. This whole unfortunate event, I did my part purely out of my kindness. Had I known you had this specific request and would be rejected by the police, I might as well not accept the (URL HIDDEN) reason that I cannot possibly fulfill every such request is that this whole process takes too much time and energy on my part, and since different local police stations have various degrees of efficiency due to bureaucratic reasons, I took you guys to the first station because I had done this before there and I know it’d be faster, saving all of us some time. Also you mentioned that I asked you to check with other Airbnb places, what I meant was that had you checked, you'd realise almost certainly no hosts would go out of the way to take you through the whole process. Finally, I just want to say during your stay, whatever the reason, we didn’t communicate our thoughts quite well, every time I asked if you were doing fine, you always responded “everything is good”. I had no idea you were not content judging from our conversations and your reactions. That was truly unfortunate and I hoped it was otherwise. Second problem. You booked a room at my place, not the whole apartment. It should be clear from the description on the Airbnb website when you booked the room. Your room was separate and for your accommodation only; My wife and my 4-year old child take the master bedroom. Indeed another room had three guests at the time. As for the number of guests, I think it’s my right to decide if I may invite friends or guests over. The point is this never affected your usage of the room you booked. Besides, as a matter of fact, the apartment was empty most of the time. Third problem, you claimed I was leveraging the Airbnb website hosting and marketing. That’s not true. I have been an Airbnb host for many years and dutifully conduct according to the rules, otherwise I wouldn’t have so many guest records already. It’s only when some friends I know personally come over, I cannot force them to go through Airbnb procedure and also because they have a right to choose the service and platform they prefer. As for general guests, I’ve recommended Airbnb each and every time, not only because I’m a loyal customer and fan, but I also enjoy this community created by all of us. Additionally, the little difference between the website description and what you actually saw was due to my periodic decoration of the apartment. It's just sometimes it may take me a while to update every detail. Lastly, as you mentioned, you departed earlier than expected so suddenly. I reminded you that since the available dates were all booked on the website, I was not able to take on new guests. Nonetheless, I offered to recompensate you the fees that may be generated by guests from other platforms.

Everything was wonderful here; Happy and his family are very charming - in fact, they made it clear from the very first second that I was not just a welcome guest, but a part of their family. They often asked me to join to eat with them (and Happy's wife cooks great). My stay here (which lasted for months) was perfect! The host is very uncomplicated if you have any needs. The location is great, modernized, and offers much to 'Westerners', compared to the rest of Shanghai. It could not have been better!

Wei is the best host I have ever seen! He has a fantastic characteristics and his wife is also awesome! I arrived at Wei's place at 6 pm and he even organized some local food for me nearby the house. Also I did not have any sim card at that time and had trouble with my wifi connection(every wifi signal require your Chinese phone number to verify, if you don't have you cannot use at all). He gave me his spare sim card! Even though I couldn't use due to my iPhone. He did what I want to do and knows what is essential for new visitors! That's why I recommend this house to stay at first you arrive. He can organize so many things and i had fun there. To be honest, i just wanted to stay more days but unfortunately every room has already been booked...fully... I'm sure you guys who are looking for some good and cozy air b&b, Wei's house might be great place to start your journey for sure. It is very well located on university road(Da xue lu, 大学路) near 复旦大学(Fudan univ).

To all the future airbnb travellers all over the world! Happy is one of the most welcoming and warm host who I have ever met in my entire travelling and Airbnb experience history. His home locates in a lovely and central place of Shanghai University area, with all kinds of nice, cozy bars, cafes around it. The location is close to the subway and good environment. Happy and his wife is very nice to all the guests, we immediately become friends and hang out together. When we went out to the startup conference - TechCrunch together. People who we met together didn't realize that we are completely strangers before we met. Someone even called us cousins. I think my view of being a airbnb host completely broaden after I lived in Happy's home and noticing what kind of beautiful things happend during my stay. Airbnb is a platform which connects the like-minded people. People with good heart and passion for their life can change the world together. I surely will open my own airbnb later on in Hangzhou and welcome all kinds of good people to live in my home. This is defintely one of the most special and rewarding week ever after I come back from Netherlands. To be honest, before this, I didn't realize there are actually so many cool and passionate young people who are doing all kinds of cool stuff in Shanghai. Shanghai has always been a tradional international city which is a bit stubborn and old to me in the past. Now, I have to say my opinion about this city and about the airbnb has risen to another level. Nevertheless, I would definitely recommed people who wants to have a cozy and homey stay in Shanghai to book Happy's place. He is a good entrepreneur who is experienced in content marketing, (SENSITIVE CONTENTS HIDDEN) marketing and all kinds of design service works. He has been not only a good airbnb host, a good entrepreneur, but also a good husband and dad in his family. If anyone has any questions and want to crosscheck with me, please free to add my (SENSITIVE CONTENTS HIDDEN): charliehu11 I am more than willing to provide my honest third party feedback to you. Best regards Charlie Hu - Triple 3D

Wei was wonderful. He's super friendly and open minded. I felt welcome from the get go. His family is also lovely and wonderful, chatting away and offering you dinner. When I first arrived, the room was hot and stuffy and has no air con. I asked Wei if he had a spare fan which he didn't. So he went to buy one straight away so that I'd feel more comfortable for sleeping. You're welcome to use any appliance in the house as if it was your own house. I could use the kitchen, washing machine, TV. The complex in which they live in is also great and the area feels like you're in the West, with its aide array of restaurants and cafés. Whether you're spending a day there or a month like I did, you'll feel welcome and happy.
