Karaka is a spacious one-bedroom cottage with a sunroom that can be converted to a second sleeping space with a sofa bed and single divan. All rooms have wonderful views of the inlet, mountains, orchards and vineyards.
Outside there is a sunny verandah, a private outdoor bath for soaking under open sky, a private garden and decks that looks straight out over the tidal Waimea Inlet to the mountains beyond.

The cottages were built for apple pickers in the 1950s. They have been carefully renovated, retaining their simplicity and authentic charm while adding contemporary comfort.

Guests are welcome to use the walking tracks through our 5 acres of regenerating coastal forest.

Located in the heart of the Nelson/Tasman region, surrounded by the vineyards of Nelson’s wine country, this is an ideal base for day trips around the Nelson region and to the Abel Tasman, Kahurangi, and Nelson Lakes National Parks.
Whilst secluded and private, the cottage is also easily accessible to Nelson; just 20 minutes (24 km) from Nelson airport and less than 5 minutes drive to the coastal village of Mapua. Mapua’s thriving wharf area has cafés and restaurants as well as galleries representing local artists.

Lives in Nelson, New Zealand
We (Kim and Elspeth) are passionate gardeners and conservationists. We have spent the past 24 years transitioning an apple orchard back to coastal forest. Wading birds on the shore of the tidal Inlet are slowly increasing in numbers thanks to predator control and restoration of their nesting habitat.
