I shall try to write a balanced analysis of the Honjin "hovel". Let's start with the positives. The house share is in an excellent and convenient location, just 5 minutes' walk from Honjin subway station and 15 minutes' walk from Nagoya Station and Midland Square, with its myriad of shops, bars and restaurants. There are several convenience stores, restaurants and a supermarket in the surrounding area so we were never short of food and drink. I highly recommend Matsuya, Coco Curry House and Turkish Taste restaurants for delicious and reasonably priced dishes.
Although basic and rustic, the room was traditionally Japanese (with tatami mats and sliding doors) and was spacious. The heated toilet seat and bidet option were nice touches.
One of the (SENSITIVE CONTENTS HIDDEN), Yasuhiro, was a very pleasant, polite and friendly man and I enjoyed chatting to him over breakfast each morning.
On the other hand, there were several issues with the accommodation - its lack of cleanliness being the most significant. Without exaggerating, it looked like the flat had not been cleaned for several months! All surfaces, such as shelves, floors and tables had dust on them, while the two fridges had distinctively unpleasant odours and even small, dead flies in them! Also, my room was very cold and I became unwell as a result - I had to ask Ryo for an electric heater to alleviate the situation (which I was very grateful for - but perhaps it should have been provided in the first place).
Ultimately, I would only recommend a short-term stay in this property (5 nights max). It's in a good location and cheap, but those looking for comfort and cleanliness should avoid it at all costs!
