Hollyhock Cottage is surrounded by roses and stone-walls and is one of the gems on the historic main street of Ophir. Come and smell the thyme-infused air, explore the wee lanes and relax in the large garden.

The space
Hollyhock Cottage has been a much-loved home for generations of families. The roughcast and stone building has been built on to lovingly over the years to create a haven of nooks and crannies. There are 3 cosy bedrooms, a snug living area, a central kitchen and dining area, and a gorgeous sun-room. Outside there are six garden areas, including a courtyard, flower beds, a cricket lawn and horse-paddock. Bring your horse, bring your bikes and bring your fishing gear. Use the cottage as a writing retreat or use it as a base for family adventures.

Where you’ll be

Central Otago District, Otago, New Zealand

Hollyhock Cottage is nestled in Ophir village. This old gold-mining village has a historic post-office to explore with the friendliest post-mistress in New Zealand, a stunning cafe, a cosy pub and, on seasonal weekends, tantalising vintage shops. Roses, poppies, hollyhocks and lavender abound. Kids will love the well-maintained village pool in the summer and the snowballs and frost in winter. There are swimming holes, picnic areas and walking tracks close by.

Ophir is walking distance to the beautiful Manuherikia River and the famous Daniel O'Connell bridge. Just a short 2 km bike ride over the river is Omakau and the Central Otago Rail Trail. The village is in the heart of Central Otago - 15 minutes car ride from Alexander and Clyde, just over one hour from Queenstown, and two hours from Dunedin.
