For ten years now I have committed myself to making travellers seeking peace and quiet off the beaten track at home in my well-managed and popular guesthouse. My garden is an oasis on this island, full of palm trees, flowers, fruits, herbs and sculptures from my creative years. Every morning we regale you with a rich breakfast offer of seasonal produce on my veranda. You can watch little sparrows fluffing their feathers in the bird font, and large butterflies winging from blossom to blossom. The rooms please with their fresh Cape Verde colour schemes and individual furnishings. Mosquito protection keeps the insects away, you turn on the ventilator as you need it – or not. The well-equipped bathrooms with shower and WC offer hot and cold water. Hair driers are available. In your refrigerator you will find beverages, and you can keep your personal fruits, wine, cookies or other culinary delights there. The bed linen gets changed once per week. Rooms will be cleaned as agreed every two days or less. Laundry can be given to wash in-house against a fee. Walking to the edge of town takes 5 minutes, into the town centre 8 minutes. The Casita Verde offers no restaurant service anymore, as there are restaurants and bars in the vicinity eager to serve you.
The garden is spacious and features small, enchanting nooks in the semi-shade where you can lounge. A hammock invites for a relaxing siesta, and the green garden provides charming places to hang out and dream. The “Africa House” is our open living room in the midst of our garden. Nearby is the (cold) garden shower. The Casita Verde veranda is only used during breakfast time. Each of the two guest rooms has its own access door and can additionally be secured with a grille that allows a good aeration of the rooms. Solar-powered motion detector lamps ensure you have a safe trip through the garden in the dark. Winding down the day in the “Africa House” with its friendly lights prepares you for a good night’s sleep.
Interaction with guests
Myself, Elizabeth, I will be there for you during breakfast time from 8:30 until 10:00am, to make suggestions or give you support for walks along the beaches, for tours in and around Vila and to the salt mine nature reserve, or for excursions to the smaller villages on the island; I can organize transportation and, if required, picnic lunches. I live in the house in my personal area. If you are interested, I can offer you a day tour by car over the island and surprise you with the contrasting beauty of this little paradise of Maio (price as agreed). For your afternoon coffee I recommend the beach bar, the small blue bar “Wolf Djarmai” behind the church with a “grand coffee”; or enjoying the delicious Café Cabo Verde at the old fortress, high above the fantastic, wide blue sea.
Other things to note
The Cape Verde archipelago belongs to Africa. That means that not everything is functioning smoothly like in Europe. There can be disruptions or problems with electricity or water supply. Late arrivals or long waits are part of everyday life. In such situations, we Europeans can learn lesson or two from the locals: Take it easy. You don’t miss out on anything! Maio is a desert island – we are obliged to treat water and power like precious goods. Please keep that in mind and help us live this way. Don’t forget to bring a flashlight along. When you shop, look out for what is available, not for what you want, as most things come by ship from Santiago. Almost everything needs to be imported. Maio’s best specialty is the freshly caught fish on offer. Even raw fish can be enjoyed here as carpaccio! Fruit from the island excels with its intensive aroma. The people on Cape Verde are proud of their country, they are open and friendly. They respect guests and want to be respected in turn. On your second walk through town already everyone gives you a friendly greeting. Try to learn a few words of Portuguese to say hello and thank you, or to place an order, and give your most friendly smile. Everyone will be pleased and will recognize your effort. To find the right measure of openness, distance and respect is not hard. Just take your orientation from the others.
Come and feel at home at my place, and treat the Casita Verde and its staff with just as much respect. Control your water and electricity consumption. Smoking is permitted on the entire outside area, but not in the rooms. A considerate conduct between guests and Casita Verde staff will optimize your stay here.
